Zilean and Lucian

Happy new year summoners! Hope y'all rankeds are going well. I was thinking about buying Zilean and Lucian. Can you tell me something about these two champions?

Lucian is a more of a fast paced adc in combat and is a hot pick for the role. His attacks are fluid with the double shot passive but has somewhat of a mana issue (Or at least he does when I spam his abilities like a bum). He hits an early powerspike that only snowballs after completing the blade of the ruined king. Overall in the current patch, he has a smaller learning curve than Zilean.

Zilean is a mage that is usually played as mid or support but is a low tier pick. While not as flashy as lucian, he's somewhat fun to play with his main kit being Q W Q (Not the emote) in which W resets the abilities of Q and E's cooldowns by a significant amount. He's very mana hungry early game if the player decides to use W excessively. His spike hits in the late stage of the mid game where his utility or damage really shines. He's more difficult to learn but is nonetheless fun to play (when you're not getting flamed).

TLDR :

Lucian : ADC : Easier than Zil : Strong pick : Flashy : Earlier PowerSpike Zilean : Mid/Sup : Meme : Hella fun in other gamemodes : Has a nifty combo if done correctly : Ulti can revive an ally : Passive is meh

I pretty much exclusively play AP Lucian for fun so I'm not much help on that front

BUT

Zilean is extremely underrated. He's strong, he can work well with a good range of ADCs, and most importantly, he's a blast to play.

When I'm screwing around with my friends, I'll take Glacial Augment or Kleptomancy for maximum annoyance. Simply walk up, press E on someone, and get two autoattacks off before they have a chance to get out of your range. Super annoying but such a blast :^)

When I play more seriously, I run this rune page right here! Aery and Cheap shot give you reliable damage throughout the early game (especially when stacked with bombs) and Ultimate Hunter + Transcendence can put your ult on a 30 second cooldown.

(_Yes, a 30 second Guardian Angel that restores 1k+ health. _)

His Ultimate and E are such strong spells that they make Zilean worth picking just for them.

Need to make the enemy ADC tilt and AFK in spawn? Tap E!
Need to make a quick moving champion like Yasuo hate his life? Tap E!
Do you hate everyone on the enemy team? Give the teammate with the best engage a 99 percent fucking speed boost and win every team fight before they have a chance to react!
Carry overextended and the enemy team thinks they have a chance to win? Tap R and make them question their pitiful existence!

TL;DR While Zilean isn't the best support, he's very strong if played correctly and can single handedly win teamfights with a well placed ultimate. His R is that strong. Super fun, too!

two things I would have liked to know when I started playing zilean:

alt+spell will cast the spell onto yourself
you can target an allies´ portrait to ult them

it makes navigating easier and helps you out when people form these giant clusterfucks where all their healthbars and models merge together, but everyone expects you to hit your ult perfectly regardless.

Additionally, be prepared that people will bitch no matter what you do. Everyone demands your ult even when it doesn´t make any sense, so you often run into situations where a person gets caught, dies in a 1v5, and then turns and yells at you that he would have easily won that fight easily if you just ulted him. Just be prepared that a lot of people, from which most of them haven´t even played your champ, will tell you how to use it. This applies to many champs but especially to zilean since a lot of players feel so entitled to that sweet sweet revive.

Zilean is my exclusive, I play only him. Today for the 1st time got Plat with him. Excellent champ in baiting enemy sums but you need team mates who can trust in your fake death and attack rather than leave you to die 2nd time and then blame you for inting. As of late game, Zilean can be huge game changer as you can continuously lock enemy team. Against champs like trynda, darius, garen, nasus, etc you can harass them to death, literally. Oh yeah, and ulti only carries. If you carry - you deserve to ulti yourself, no matter what feeders tells you.
