Pyke's Nerf is bad..

Κιτρινο··7 votes·4,165 views

The new Pyke nerf is just bad. Pyke with the new nerf lost all of his wave clearing abilities. Right now Pyke has only one way to clear waves. Auto attacks! Q with the new changes ( New: Q damages only the nearest target it hits, Old: Damages Every target in range and deals more damage to the nearest) really can't do match against a medium or a large wave. E doesn't do anything against minions and monsters (New: E damages and stuns only champions, Old: E damages and stuns everyone). If it's really nessecary you can use R to kill some normal minions. Also something that lower ranks won't care about is that clearing enemy jungle camps for counter jungle and a bit of gold isn't possible anymore (This would put the enemy jungler in a bit of a worse position and you get gold for doing it). Basicly Pyke now can't defend against medium or large waves of minions, can't push fast enough and can't counter jungle.

He doesn't need waveclear he's a fucking support.

Waveclear is generally detrimental to supports, since they're generally not supposed to take CS.

Illabethe4 votes

This is extremely false. Supports are expected to CS after lane phase. They are expected to defend bases. They are expected to apply lane pressure. Go look at pro play before making such a ludicrous statement. Supports at the top will always apply lane wave clear pressure.

ModAcademy Kayn2 votes

Sure, but most supports don't generally farm champions at the same time. Pyke is an outlier to most supports, the most kill hungry one next to the Soraka my friend plays like a mad man. The benefit he brings through his extra gold on Ult, not to mention noteworthy damage, should come at the cost of other things.

With Pyke mid/top becoming more common, waveclear is the first thing that should go, since it's not entirely core to his kit, and his strengths are greater elsewhere to compensate. That's my opinion at the very least.

5kcheesesticks1 votes

He didn't do damage before, he doesn't do damage now no matter how fed you are. Trust me. I challenge anyone who says pyke does damage to play him yourself and take note of the damage output to champs at the end of every game. You would be surprised and how low he is on that chart compared to the rest even when you think you legit carried the team.

Out of my hundreds of games playing as him, i have yet to experience a game where im at the top of the chart, 95% of the time im the lowest damage output and by a huge margin, fed or not.

Like i said, i challenge anybody who thinks he did a ton of damage to test 5 games and see where you end up on the chart in terms of DPS output against champions. You will be surprised.

Zyra and Sona (Lichbane, Archangel) don't farm champions? What?

I think anyone will try to argue that their idea of supports is somehow passive no farm, no damage, no control, no execute, but in reality, over half the role does just that....

If I play Leona, I usually end the game with 7+ kills..... and can solo 1v1 most adc....

If I play Sona, I can easily get 8+ kills and over 30 assists.

If I play Zyra I usually get 25-40 DH stacks, and pretty much 1v5 the other team.

If I play Morgana, I'm generally getting 12-16 kills, 12-16 assists and over 100 CC.

If I play Nami, it's not unusual for me to do #2 damage, and get 5-7 kills and 35 assists, with 60-70 CS.

Blitz and Bard both are kill heavy supports....

ArtumisPrime1 votes

First of all, you're not playing those champions as support. You're doing it in the jungle....and even then your numbers are exaggerated. "Generally getting 12-16 kills as Morg" your highest in the last month is 17, and that was the only game over 12. You average around 5-6.

Also the reason Pyke has the gold share on his ult is to incentivize its use, because taking gold away from the carries is detrimental to the team.

Lastly, you talk about people watching pro play before making claims about how the game should be played....yet you make all these claims about supports taking kills--when they absolutely would not in pro play unless there is a high and present danger of the target escaping. This is hypocrisy at its highest level.

DuskDaUmbreon1 votes

Expected to CS and clear to a degree, yes...But what support is ever going to clear better than a mage or ADC in mid/late game?

They're expected to apply some pressure, but if almost every other CC-based support does just fine with minimal waveclear, why does Pyke in particular need waveclear?

Illabethe1 votes

Every other CC based support DOES have wave clear. Not Minimal; HAS IT. No other champ is currently throttled into "Cannot substute damage for my team."

Even Janna and Sona have decent waveclear.

Where do you get this idea that supports have minimal waveclear?

DuskDaUmbreon1 votes

Janna and Sona aren't waveclear-based, Sona isn't CC-based, and Sona's waveclear is shit. Between an auto and her entire kit she can damage a grand total of...3 minions.

And if you look at Leona, Braum, or Yuumi, they also have basically no waveclear (Sure, Leona has some, but it's barely enough to kill casters at best and your ADC will kill the casters faster with autos than your W will). Many supports have weak waveclear as well, even if they have some.

Pyke doesn't need waveclear. He might be able to use it but it's FAR from necessary for a support.

This exactly lol. I get it, diversity yada yada yada, no, Pyke is a damn support lol and is meant to be played like one.

Pyke with the new nerf lost all of his wave clearing abilities.

Yes, because Riot was intentionally trying to remove him from solo lanes. They hit his waveclear to accomplish that.

Support Pyke is almost largely unaffected, the compensation buffs to Q and W help the nerfs not be so noticeable.

5kcheesesticks2 votes

No.

Hotarµ2 votes

Yes?

I understand you're bitter about the changes but they're not that bad, he can still work and thrive if you're actually skilled.

5kcheesesticks1 votes

Anything works if you're skilled that doesn't mean its balanced. Such a poor argument.

The point is these nerfs were excessive. There are better ways to have addressed his clear. For instance, instead of completely removing his damage against minions they could have just drastically reduced the damage of it against mobs. That way at least he can still help adc clear the wave when they win exchanges.

And if above still lisn't reasonable then at the very least they should have left his Q damage alone. He got enough nerfs for 2-3 years. Ive never seen such a drastic attempt to balance a champ in 1 patch during the 5+ years of LoL. The only one i can remember being similar was Shaco's nerfs.

Hotarµ1 votes

Except that's not entirely what I said. I said that he's still playable and can be strong in the right hands, at a base level he's not dead.

That still leaves the possibility of solo Pyke open, which Riot doesn't want. I think these nerfs could have been handled better but it's not the end of the world.

My biggest gripe is with the tap-Q damage reduction, I don't like that change and I think they went overboard with it.

His only substantial nerfs have been targeted at tank Pyke builds, other than that Pyke has been almost untouched for a majority of the time. Ultimately that doesn't matter because solo Pyke was problematic and something needed to be done.

5kcheesesticks1 votes

Thats literally exactly what you said.

Heard of kench?

Nobody said it's the end of the world, you keep saying how his kit still works and how if you're good you'll thrive while completely missing the point. I'll say this again, just because he's playable doesn't make him balance. A guy with severe arthritis isn't going to compete in pro basketball league just because he still has his legs.

If pyke has almost been untouched then santa clause must also be real in your world.

  1. Pyke came out maybe a year ago... maybe not 2-3 lol

  2. Tahm kench designed as a support is no longer playable support because of like 10 patches gutting to his w I'm not sure they are even finished yet. So now he is a top laner because of pro play. This is what happened to your champ except opposite and your champ was actually designed to play support. Accept that things get ruined by pro play and either play him in the way rito forces him played or don't and be worse off for it

5kcheesesticks1 votes

Huh?

I said this 1 nerf is equal to what it generally takes other champs to get during a series of nerfs throughout years of "balance" attempts. Pyke got it all in 1 patch which is crazy. They didn't even test the waters or slowly tweak him here and there, they just straight up gave him the hammer and nerfed all his abilities to the ground except his ult.

He's actually only got 6 supports that he even counters anymore, and 2 of those 6 are around 50%.....

He's down to an average of 7000 physical damage per game.... should tell you something.

And this is right out of the gate. It's going to get worse.

Here's another fun one:

https://champion.gg/champion/Pyke/Support?

Look at his Win rate by games played: In above Plat, he actually does't have more than 2-3 players who have over 50 games with him! Sooooooo popular....

Oh. And then there's the fact that this is literally the ONLY champ they are applying this logic to....

Hotarµ1 votes

Probably inflated/lowered by the people who are still trying solo Pyke. It's also been 3 days since the patch so it might be too early to tell.

Also, according to League of Graphs he's got about a 49% winrate across all ELOs. League Spy has him at 48.5%-49%. There's clearly conflicting information, we need to give it more time before we can decide how severely he was hurt.

And this is right out of the gate. It's going to get worse.

Or it could improve once people stop forcibly picking solo Pyke and losing games, it could improve once people find out new build paths, it could improve once people find out new playstyles.

Too early to tell. Let's give it more than a mere 3 days.

Illabethe1 votes

The difference in different sites:

Some only offer a 7 day scope of stats (patch isn't that old) Others offer both a 7 day scope AND a "since patch" scope. Some offer by patch.

You are right though; We do have a low sample size atm (about 4000-5000 games as support and 1-2 as other roles)

1 - Pyke was designed as a support in the first place. He's listed as a support in the client and he's never been allowed to flourish in other lanes for longer than a few patches.

2 - Pyke was immensely popular before this playstyle even came out and will continue to be popular afterwards. People like Pyke whether he's played in support or top or mid or jungle, he's a fun champion who can be immensely strong in skilled hands.

3 - Solo Pyke was problematic, these nerfs aren't going to be reverted. Maybe altered in some way, but not fully reverted.

4 - I and the other dedicated Pyke mains love playing him in general, support is fine. Just because you don't like support Pyke doesn't mean we all hate it.

Ryze was designed as a mid laner so was Vladimir so wasKennen so was Viktor so was Karthus so was Velkoz so wasHeimerdinger so wasXerath but they all get played everywhere else but their lane they were designed for

The difference is that when a Ryze or Viktor goes top, his playstyle doesn't change entirely and he can't massively influence the game once he hits 6.

Pyke mid/top plays too differently compared to support Pyke to the point where it's unhealthy. He goes from a fast paced assassin to a slower paced and much less risky laner who just wears you down and then ults you, if he can't do that he just roams and then gets massive ults odd in teamfights.

At what point do you draw the line between "unique playstyle" and "unintended, unhealthy playstyle that goes against the design of the champion as a whole"?

I like him as support... The fact that I can't help apply pressure in lane by helping adc push/clear wave like every other support champ is hindering. They addressed his "problem" in ways that affected his role as a support. It's actually cancerous in mid-late game when you want to help push lanes but are literally useless. Another time when it feels like you're literally useless is when some of your team dies and it's just you defending a tower but can't clear the wave fast enough so the tower is literally a free tower for the opposing team. Me defending the tower is equivalent to it having no one defending it. These nerfs were stupid.

Vel'koz, brand, zyra, and lux are AP midlaners that went bot lane, the fact that they are commonly played supports is due to the fact that the kill lane meta has gone out of control to offset the previous shield stacking enchanters. They are also not AD, lack mobility and sustain, more or less highly telegraphed (and no, pyke using his shit from stealth isn't highly telegraphed just because it had a windup) and don't have executes. AND THEY'RE SQUISHY AS HELL.

Ah, and his huge resistances and a respectable health pool since he can't build health, so Aftershock makes him unkillable early, allowing him to take that trade where he fucked up bad and getting away with 20% due to his stupid fucking dash that stuns behind him but also gets to come back with 95% due to passive and Relic Shield.

Wasn't Soraka nerfed repeatedly due to being able to heal her ADC back to safety (and at a personal cost of health)? Why does a significantly more dangerous character get so many handheld mechanics?

Let's go down the line. You apply the standards of an AD support-assassin with that of AP Mages, who are supports insofar as they provide CC. We could go into a whole debacle of whether or not they are supports, which by the way they are pseudo-supports (functioning as a second mid laner to carry their ADC), but let's not. Your equation of the two classes is fundamentally flawed.

Next you say the only time you've personally 1 combo'd someone is when you are fed. First of all, this is anecdotal, so it should actually be thrown out entirely, but anyway, are you talking about solo? Because with your adc, you are going to kill them once your stun goes off, assuming you've landed a hook on something that isn't Alistar and your ult is up.

Finally, you say that since you have "least damage done" you aren't doing much. Again, anecdotal.. but.. you seem to be ignoring that your ult isn't added to that damage, and that the majority of your listed damage is single target. You getting a pentakill by spamming R isn't going to add to your damage stats, even though it changed the game, and that you're executing squishies at around half health.

But yeah, keep pretending you're the only person that understands Pyke. I'm sure you're impressing.. someone.

I played him exclusively support and these nerfs dumpster'd him. They could've nerfed his ult or his regen (both are a little OP), but his Q and E were his bread and butter. Both could be played around, and both could be utilized well by a skilled player. They were of a small few abilities, in a game full of mindless stat checks, that could actually utilize skill. And of course they nerfed these....

Now he's an assassin support that does no dmg, his grip is the worst in the game (blitz, naut, thresh all are far superior in gripping power), has to all in for a now shtty stun, and can still be 2-shot by any dmg dealer who bothers to right click on him.

He was weak as support before, and now he's useless.

ModAcademy Kayn2 votes

Except... nerfing his Ult and Regen are also complete nerfs to his Support role. Pyke got literally no damage changes outside of his shotgun Q, he just lost his waveclear potential.

And no, other supports do not waveclear unless you're taking one of the mid lane mages into the bottom lane (Lux, Zyra, Karma, Brand, Vel, Xerath, Morgana-yes she was a mid lane mage first).

And no, they don't do it better than any other champ.

Good Lord -.-

Illabethe1 votes

For non mages to wave clear, they have to actually get in deep, get an item lead, and damage exceed the rate of minion wave HP growth.

Those mages you mentioned get to it far sooner, far better, and need less items to do it.

AD champs generally need 200+ AD to 1 shot waves. Which is 2-3 items in.

Morgana is FAR better clear than any of them.

MiracleMorg941 votes

Nope, they don't. Unless Morg has a lead and is building AP instead of support, it takes her awhile before her W can clear anything as a support.

And they nerfed Morgana's w earlier this season precisely for the same reason because it had too much waveclear and was being played in solo lanes.... and now shes back to being played almost all support.. congrats you played yourself

Illabethe1 votes

W was changed, not nerfed...... and its current form when morg is used correctly is STILL stronger than the version pre VGU update.

Why?

They increased the RANGE of damage from min to max. If you can hit Q, apply other forms of damage very early in a fight, the majority of damage ends up being in the upper realm of that range.

If you use just W and nothing else, the damage rate is about the same.

They did slightly nerf the min range after the VGU because they discovered that by increasing the range, they had imbalanced the skill at the upper end of the damage, so they wanted to skew the average down a little bit.

I think you need to look at this account's match history for this year; the primary champion played: Morgana, and I play her jungle, and I have faster wave clear than most junglers :)

My Win rate is also climbing with her again, from losses I incurred as (ironically) support.

I generally am almost a 4 KDA or greater, and the most damage on my teams by far <3.

I mainly play Pyke as a support and those nerfs don't damage his support that much. Theres a HUGE list... how did you only come up with 2? Brand/malz/zyra/morg/kench/blitz/fiddle/karma/lulu/Naut/lux/shen/teemo/velkoz/zilean and thats just from the top of my head.
