How do you pick a main in this game?

Hey, I'm level 31 (nearly 32) and I literally find it impossible to pick a main, I like hard to kill characters but also really like mages, I usually play Bard but everyone always picks support so I never get to play him or people yell at me like crazy, I generally play the game while high on opiates so I'm pretty tilt-proof and never really rage but it hurts mah feelers when people do that.

Anyways, are there any casters that are hard to kill out there? I play Karthus sometimes and while I enjoy his playstyle he is pretty squishy and I don't really have the map awareness to use his ult as well as most would, Bard is okay as I don't mind picking up meeps but everytime I do try to grab a few close ones the person in lane with me gets mad and tells me to come back, even if I'm gone for 5 seconds and we're winning the lane.

Also, my teammates always pick up the health shrines the moment I drop them instead of waiting a few seconds for them to power up.

I just want a tough caster who wont end up having people throw F-bombs at me for playing but the community in this game is pretty toxic, I also play Anivia sometimes but some of her mechanics annoy me, I like the wall but I'm bad at combo-ing.

Also, I generally hate playing melee champions and AD ranged types like Ashe or Tristana as I find them either too twitchy or too boring and they lack the interesting mechanics that casters have generally. I don't mind some like Dr Mundo as he has cleavers though but I rarely win a lane with him as most people are pretty good at dodging them it seems and I'm not bad at aiming as I do pretty well with Karthus' Q.

After thinking about it some I think Karthus is pretty my favorite that I've played, or tied with Bard but at least when I play Karthus I don't get yelled at, but my K/D ratio is always meh with him due to his squishiness. Is there a champion that plays like Karthus but doesn't die in 3 hits?

Jungle - Amumu Tanky but still does solid AOE damage with his W, E, and ult. Top - Rumble Has the ability to be fairly tanky lategame with damage that absolutely melts Mid - Malzahar Not very tanky, but also has a lot of solid ranged attacks and a shutdown ult

I'll add MorganaMorgana to this list, Maokai Maokai is a solid choice, but he's more of a tank. Most tanks are pretty 'kit-reliant' in that they require you to use your spells, so in that case Zac Zac seems to fit your requirements as well.

Mordekaiser. He's really good at not dying as long as you position yourself properly.

I generally play the game while high on opiates

I, too, enjoy purposefully hindering my team’s ability to win.

Rumble looks kind of interesting.

Rumble is fun! Farming with E and timing your yellow/red bar are important. Plus his W is great as an engage or escape. He's one of the few champs in the game that can consistently get double/triple kills in teamfights without being a glass cannon.

What about Maokai, just wondering as he seems interesting too.

I Iike Mao, he's just less of a caster. His best route is to go full tank and CC late in the game. He's great a tanky support comp though.

Ty for all the info, I think I'll check out Rumble for sure, and Amumu as well. You've been very helpful!

Vladimir maybe? He's a caster, not that easy to kill since he has healing in his kit, manaless, can build tanky items while dealing damage.

This is a decent choice. Less likely to have a huge rework so youd bever be left in the dust Resourceless which makes itemazion and learning his laning easier Never really 'weak' in any meta Flexible between being a top laner and mid laner. Ranged but pretty durable

Quinn top Quinn Jungle Quinn Mid Quinn Adc Quinn Support (if with premade trolling otherwise I won't do that but hey, anything can be doable if you like a champion).

So I had the same issue as you at a time. I found Zed, and Udyr top lane. That's just me though. Udyr is just fun as hell and he bursts people down in 2 seconds. Zed gets people mad because they don't know what to do against good zeds.

Your main is the champion you feel most passionate about. They don't have to be god tier but they have to be at least viable. Your appreciation for this champion has to extend beyond the game itself. When you play this champion, you just have fun, even if you are losing. Sometimes you decide you want to try a completely different build just because you think it would be fun. Maybe you find something that works well? Either way, you can play this champion and it really takes a lot for you to say "ok, I've played enough of X for today."

'X' in my case is Chogath . I even go so far as to play him as a support tank because I hate top lane. It works surprisingly well if you have an ADC that isn't afraid to give up kills :)

Judging from your description, I would recommend Swain. He has medium-range abilities, similar to Karthus, interesting synergies with different allies due to his ability to enhance teammates' crowd control, and is probably the most durable mage in the game - he has high base durability, his ult gives him bonus health, and he has a significant self-heal through his passive and his ult damage. He has some weaknesses, though. He has no mobility, so you play as more of an extension of your team's frontline, rather than being able to dive enemies. He also has some weird skillshots that take some time to get used to.

Another possibility would be Lissandra, though most of her durability comes from self-casting Frozen Tomb. She brings a lot of crowd control and AoE damage to a fight, and even has some mobility. If you're the type of player who likes to get kills, I would warn you away from her, though. She's more likely to weaken the enemies and enable your team to clean up than to get kills herself.

Essentially, the class of champion you want to look at is the Battlemage, which includes Karthus, Swain, Lissandra, and many of the other champions people have mentioned in the comments.
