The fact this games been out for 5 YEARS AND RANKED CAN START WITH PEOPLE NOT CONNECTED IS SHAMEFUL

I'd understand if this was a new game. THIS IS 5 YEARS. Why can valve do it just fine and you can't? We know you don't care about your player base once you have our money. But at least pretend.

Because Valve has a better engine, more servers already available, and more money to throw at it.

While Riot has to reach all these on it's own with it's server roadmap, and unfortunately they are stuck on the crappy engine they made league on, because of how little they had at the start.

I am of course not saying Riot shouldn't have this by now, but Valve had a much much easier time doing it then Riot would.

At least they are actually making progress with the new network infrastructure.

Valve has a team of 30~ people for dota... Riot has about 1000+

injourn3 votes

So you're saying all 1000 of them work specifically on the game?

Rrett2 votes

I mean they do more stuff better, and quicker with a small fraction of riot staff.

Not much to say.

lDontLiftIcarry1 votes

"oh these guys made a game with unreal 3 engine wow look how good it is!!!"

You made a game with someone elses content.

Anyone can make a game with a pre built engine and then improve on it. Infact I just played a game my friend built on unity engine. Riot literally started their own engine. And their own client from nothing. Fucking adobe air dude.

Rrett1 votes

yeah but valve just completely redid the client... with a smaller team... and in less time than it took to even get a VU on the league client...

lDontLiftIcarry1 votes

No they didn't. Its basically just a re skin of dota all stars/dota chaos heroes

remotayy12 votes

According to that logic than if I, a person who has not pre-ordered anything, pre-order a game the game is special all the sudden.

lDontLiftIcarry1 votes

idgaf if its special to you. Don't like it then don't play. :P

remotayy11 votes

I'm just pointing out that your logic is pretty crap.

lDontLiftIcarry1 votes

you're just making up shit to insult with.

Instead of building on a conversation or saying something useful you just insult and say something unintelligent.

Not that I expect much out of these forums full of plats and lowers who barely understand this game let alone any game.

Hello I am Bird2 votes

You know, everywhere I've seen you on these forums you act like a real ass you know that?

Like, not really relevant, but you just don't seem like the kinda guy I would wanna hang out with.

Even earlier in this thread you acted like a spoiled bitch for saying 60 ping is bad for ranked.

When I compare Valve to Riot I... well, I kinda cry for Riot. This is not to say that I dislike Riot, but, uhm... Valve is heavily outpacing them at this point, with a much smaller team, no less. Riot kinda needs to get on the ball with this. I know Valve has had a lot of help just based on their company infrastructure and policies, but it's still not looking great.

Also, IceFrog vs. the entirety of a League balance team. 1 man... as opposed to a team. I don't even. That said, League also has a much larger marketing team and probably a lot more artists, since DotA2 appears to be primarily spread by word of mouth and the cosmetics of DotA2 is largely outsourced to the community, which is awesome in its own way. That said, Riot still feels a little slow on things like VUs and reworks. Those are handled by whole teams and still feel slow.

Eeyore5 votes

Haha, "quicker" from Valve.

Didn't Team Fortress 2 take 10 years? Aren't we still waiting for Half Life 3?

Wow, they released like 50 hats every other day.

In all seriousness - Valve uses pre-existing engines. The fact PLAYERS can make content for Valve games is evident of how relatively easy the engine is to use. Maybe it was Riot's mistake to create their own engine - but comparing Valve to Riot is not a fair comparison.

Rrett1 votes

are they even working on hl3? I don't think so...

If they are it's probably a creativity block and not a logistics block.

But what does pre-existing engines have to do with this? Riot already has a engine, and so does valve. If they need to code new mechanics in it's roughly the same amount of work at this point. It's not like riot is remaking the league engine every time they need to do something, and valve isn't either. Actually when it's a bug that needs some of the engine to be re-written, they put it on the back burner for a couple of years untill they decide to fix it. At least that's what they've done everytime a bug like that has occured.

If valve has a bug, they fix it right away, if riot has a bug, well they wait 5 years and then they go 'oh yeah we never really got around to it"(twitch ult).

These are both games that face extremely similar problems and development, and dota is vastly outpacing league in quality, and speed with a vastly inferior(in numbers) work force.

But you're right. comparing valve to riot is not a fair comparison, as riot is a fucking joke. more than 30x the workers and they have less quality and quantity.

Eeyore6 votes

Valve had 330 employees as of 2013. So Riot has 3 times the number of employees. The majority of Riot's employee base is community-driven and do not contribute to game content in any way, even quality assurance. Valve's employee count might not even include subsidiaries.

Riot is building a new networking infrastructure to solve the issue of lag for their players - one they could potentially rent/give to every ping-driven game out there, effectively removing lag from every player connected to it. Heck, Riot's total employees probably includes people working on projects like this.

Sure, Riot could have games terminate if one player never connects - but where exactly are you suppose to draw the line at that? Some people never connect to the loading screen; some people drop from the loading screen at 100%, let alone while loading; people drop from the game after the game launches; people drop the from the game between minute-0 and the game finishing. Some people drop from the loading screen but reconnect before minions even spawn - if the game terminates, they're going to get punished for bugsplatting AND everyone has to queue up again. Someone who plays chicken with someone who stole their lane and neither of them dodge - you can just Alt+F4 during the loading screen instead (and you thought people dodging in the last 5 seconds was annoying). At any stage it is open to abuse.

Disconnects affect a relatively small portion of games and Riot regularly bans repeat offenders. Yesterday I had two games in a row, but those were the first disconnects I'd had in weeks. They are also, as stated, working to remove lag from the equation - so anyone who disconnects after the next system has rolled out either needs to stop playing (because they're computer is shit) or they're doing it intentionally. Either way, Riot can just apply ranked restrictions and bans.

They are solving the problem not just removing symptoms.

I would say atleast give players loss forgiveness when they get a leaver so they dont lose LP constantly because of people who have horrible internet connection.

Sammystorm1 votes

It really doesn't happen consistently.

chipndip15 votes

The game should abort if someone dc's out of the game before the game even starts. It's an unfair advantage to the enemy unless they come back post-haste.

DarksideEric4 votes

Not to argue but... it's not all that odd for online multiplayer games to start games without the original cast of players.

Happens fairly frequently in FPS games.

Happens now and then in Hearthstone.

Has even happened in games like Street Fighter.

Occams Raiser2 votes

They don't have punishment for the remaining teammates.

EpikFeeder3 votes

It already takes long enough to get into a game. Im all for waiting for players to connect, but not at the cost of me waiting 30 minutes for a game to start. Riot really just need to put the hammer down on people that dc etc. By hammer down i mean : 1st offense : Warning 2nd Offense in X day period 7 day ranked ban 3rd offense in X day period 30 day ranked ban 4th offense in X day period Rest of season ranked ban if you have bad internet? STAY OUT OF RANKED

I can totally check my ping before I queue for a ranked game........ Oh wait...

Oh wait, you can!

  1. You can create a custom game.
  2. (Windows Only) You can use the "Run" command (Windows button + R is the shortcut) and type "ping -t 216.52.241.254" without the quotation marks (I think that 216.52.241.254 is the NA server IP address, but I am not sure (obviously, I never cared that much, playing on EUNE)). Also, you can use "ping -t xxx" to different IP addresses or websites to see if this is a problem with server or on your side (you can always use "tracert" instead of "ping" but I find it more difficult to use).
  3. You can just google "Ping test" and it will find tons of websites for you to check (obviously only works if the issues are from your end).
Sammystorm11 votes

Since I really should have to go through all of that trouble to just check my ping that is already tracked by the client.

Fórsa3 votes

So i understand you correctly? You go to ranked to test ping / lags ?

Sammystorm4 votes

I didn't say that. What I did say was that Riot provides no accurate way of testing your ping without entering a game. Which is a massive inconvenience and not worth doing unless your internet is routinely shit. My internet is normally great. Rarely it isn't. Should I have to make a game and potentially use up 5-10 minutes of my life despite the fact that it is easily something that Riot could show us because you know they already track ping for each individual player. They could just add a "test your ping" button. It is just flat lazy that Riot hasn't implemented something.

Junsui Aoi2 votes

I mean, you can do a bot match and a) rush it or b) use that time to see what another champ does or c) practice cs. The bot match checks it just fine.

Sammystorm2 votes

They you leave the custom or bot match and get hit with low priority queue. Yay good plan.

Then you queue up for ranked and get a spike in the middle of the game.

Also what about all the people who can't play more then one game a day? Are you saying that they should have to play bots every day? Their is literally no reason people should have to make a bot or custom game to check ping.

Junsui Aoi3 votes

You don't get low priority from a custom. Do a one man for 5 minute to check it and leave. There is absolutely no penalty. I've done it at least a hundred times.

5 minutes isn't a big sacrifice if you can only play one game. If you can't spare 5 minutes, you shouldn't be doing ranked when it can be anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 hr 20 min. I always make sure I have at least an hour and some wiggle room once I actually am starting a match (that doesn't include queue time, which I give 15 minutes).

As for the spike, it happens to most people. Suck it up. It just shouldn't be the norm that you play at. Besides, wth is the point of bringing up the spike? I mean, even with a "hey, check ping here" button, that's not gonna change anything. Cause it happens. As you said. Mid. Game. So it's irrelevant to EITHER argument.

kunkudunk1 votes

The issue is some computers perform worse once you are in a game of 10 humans than just an empty custom with a bot. You might say well then they shouldn't do ranked but there are already some barriers to entry to do ranked and if someone plays league long enough on a bad computer and they still wanna do ranked and at least can connect, well I guess that is there business. They will probably get banned if it is bad enough that they always dc anyway.

I Am Florg1 votes

Your computer performance is separate from your connection issues. unless your wifi card is broken or something i guess

kunkudunk1 votes

Regardless some wifi cards don't handle the data of ten people as well as 1 person and a bot. It happens.

DeynaTaggerung2 votes

Try LSI (League Summoner Info) it's useful for a lot of things but one of them is a ping checker to see if you should go into game.

You can. Make a custom. Look at your ping. Quit the custom. Only take 1 minute :)

Taarki6 votes

What happens if you are playing, your internet is fine and everything is going just dandy. Then all the sudden Boom connection issues with the tower, the whole area's internet is down. That cannot be helped, and happens more often than you think, especially in the country where the internet speeds aren't hundreds of MB/second. Should I not be allowed to play league because of where my parents bought their house 20 years ago? Shame on you.

Marcq343 votes

Thats why the first time is only a warning... If it's happening repeatedly than maybe ranked isn't for you which is his point.

lDontLiftIcarry2 votes

No you shouldn't and yes you should. Your question is loaded, don't be so foolish.

In a competitive game you want everyone on an equal playing field. So when you have someone on your team lagging but still queueing up for ranked its like wtf lol.

Even just playing normals i get annoyed if my ping is even 10 over what it should be so idk how anyone can be fine with lagging unless you don't really know how to micro or anything that would make having low ping important in which case I can't even think about an answer for you or anyone else because I'm not talking about variables that are meaningless. Since I transfered to LAN for the 52 ping I don't want to have 60-300 ping every game like I got in NA for 5 years straight basically.

In any competitive game having 15-50 ping is basically a necessity no exceptions. Even 1 frame can be the difference between you winning and losing a match completely when you get high enough on the ladder in most games.

I've played countless games that rely on fast pace reactions.

street fighter, mortal kombat, halo 1/2, cod 4, UT 2004, dota all stars, dota chaos heroes, Wc3, broodwar, blade and soul, black desert online and last but not least league of legends. Infact theres probably more I've played and I just can't even think about them because the fact is that high or even mid range ping is unplayable in an enviroment where everything is constantly moving and people who can't keep up are punished badly.

60 ping is "unplayable"?

Wow, you're spoiled.

Anidan4 votes

60 ping? Sweet shit, I'd eat a hundred Teemos for that. I get down to 95 on a great day, and anywhere from 100-120 any other day. I've played with 150 ping before and normalized it so that I got the reflexes down for that ping just as well as when my ping is at its normal 100-120.

60 ping or lower sounds like a Godsend.

Junsui Aoi3 votes

That's east coast in a nutshell. Its honestly not fair that its considered high on one end of the US and normal on the other. On LAN however, I get anywhere from 15-40. Anything higher and something is wrong. It really is such a difference.

MarhsallLee674 votes

I'm in pretty much the same boat, atm. I used to have 60-70 ping on a regular basis. Now it ranges from 90-110, but I honestly haven't noticed a difference. I only start to notice lag when my ping gets upwards of 120 (which doesn't happen on its own- usually it means I have too much running on my comp at once and need to close some stuff).

I'd like to start a petition to have riot cancel the game after 10 minutes of them not connecting and count it as a dodge for them.

Urdnot Entar2 votes

An awful lot of what Riot does is shameful. The fact that this game has been out for 5 years and <insert plenty of things Riot has and continues to do> is shameful

Meanwhile, loving Heroes of the Storm over here - the design might not be everyone's cup of tea, and they have a few of their own issues, but it's nice playing a game from a development team that knows what they're doing.

Naziru2 votes

Agree 100%. It is a little slow paced compared to what I'm used to but that is allowing me to strategize and maneuver alot more than I ever worried about on here, where you can often melt someone in a second or two if your playing right.
