LS said What I hope for. Swain Should go back on the Rework pile

SwainsGluteCyst··9 votes·3,335 views

You all Know Swain had a rework. However you should Know that Swain Mains from the past are bleeding away. With the hype train moving away, It is likely he will end up like Quinn at this point. Unless Riot buffs his numbers to the point of broken.

Here is a link to a cry for a rework on the Swain main reddit.

https://www.reddit.com/r/SwainMains/comments/7z0ule/we_have_to_unite_and_stand_together/

At the time of posting, It is at 218 for a rework, and 72 against another rework.

https://ibb.co/ekCJxc

I have personally called for a boycott on Swain in rank to show the number of people who want a Rework. That however , is not as poplar.

However for those that just know Swain is a Champ. Please listen to What Swain mains Want.

We are divided on direction, and I represent the older Swain players, before the Mage update. The older Swain mains wanted A DoT and debuff mage. For a simple comparison, call it AP Nasus 2.0 (no point in Q). From what I gathered Riot threw this under the bus, saying play Malzahar or Brand. Tell me, If they could only come up with two examples, and one of them is Brand who, unless you are kite-ing a tank, just wants to use everything and back off, Is another DoT mage too much to ask? Even one without a single hard CC?

The other Party wants this current version, however with more thought and care pored in to in. I personally am not clear on this goal, so I ask someone else to come forward to post this direction.

Please Help. I know if he is put on the list, It will take a while, however we are willing to wait. Be it 1 year or 10. The mere mention that Swain is on the rework list is all we want.

Don't know if he should get a complete rework right away, but I can definitely say that Swain was a very lackluster rework.

SwainsGluteCyst2 votes

Not asking for a rework right away, asking for him to be thrown back in the rework line. If that means 10 years of waiting, then so be it.

The thing is, He was introduced, and fell flat. Next champ is creating a Hype Train that will distract people away from Swain. So unless a Meta where his is king comes along, or Riot Buffs him to the point of Stupid OP. He is just going to be there. May have attracted a few people, but likely loss much, much more.

I really do miss the DoT aspect of Swain's old kit. He was one of my mains for S7 but I'm not interested in what he offers anymore post rework. I've had to take Riot's advice and have been mainly playing Brand S8.

Teridax684 votes

Not a Swain main, but here are my 2 long cents on stuff I think could already have a significant positive impact on him, in view of another rework:

#Visuals/Lore

  • Give Swain short hair: Riot's argument for this change seemed to be that they didn't really feel like he should have the short hair of a soldier, even if they took great pains to stress everywhere else that they wanted him to be young and physically fit enough to still look like one. The players care about details like this much more than the devs cared about changing it, so making Swain's hair short once more could already score major brownie points (Beatrice points?).
  • Age Swain by another twenty years: Swain used to be one of League's very few elderly champions, and it suited him well. He was a cunning mage who hid his monstrous power behind a physically frail body, a concept that resonated well with his fans. Riot's argument for changing this? They couldn't possibly imagine an elderly person being able to fight. This is ageist as fuck, and ignores the wealth of fictional mages and wizards that speak to the contrary (hell, the very trope of the wizard is an old guy with a beard). Making Swain properly old would, again, make a lot of fans happy with no real downsides.
  • Give Swain his cane and leg injury back as a baseline part of his model/animation: As with Swain's age, his disability was an iconic feature many players (including players who themselves have disabilities) bonded with, and conveyed the idea that even someone who was far from being the physical best could still be a formidable enemy (this would also perfectly coincide with him being the epitome of Vision in Noxus). Also similarly to Swain's age, the devs who worked on him decided that a crippling leg injury would somehow prevent him from being a powerful magic user, so they copped out and had him magically fix his body, so that he may as well have no disability at all. Crass ableism on the part of a few unimaginative people should not be an excuse to fundamentally alter a character's iconic physical traits and silhouette for no good reason.
  • Give Swain a demon head on all of his skins: This has also been a point of contention where the misguided aesthetic choices of a few Riot devs conflicted with the much larger preferences of a playerbase who really wanted him to transform, not just pretend to be an angel of death. Ultimately, Riot's argument that they didn't want to show a full transformation because it would imply loss of control (which is bullshit), was itself rendered moot by Tyrant Swain giving him a raven head, and Dragon Master Swain turning him into a full dragon on transformation. As with the above, giving Swain a demon head on each transformation would make the playerbase significantly happier, without having any negative impact on his lore, theme or visuals (in fact, it could allow for more fun differentiation between skins, such as Bilgewater Swain gaining the head of a demon parrot).
  • Just call the demon Beatrice: As with the rest, Beatrice was a key component to Swain's character that fans loved and closely associated with, which got dumped for no particular reason. To add insult to injury, Beatrice is still mentioned by Swain as a joke, with him neither knowing nor caring who she is. An easy fix to this could be to just have Beatrice be the name of the raven demon he tames, which would not only enrich the bond the two have with each other, but could also correlate rather well to how him knowing the demon's true name gives him power over it/her.

#Gameplay

  • Figure out how to make DoTs interesting, and give them back to Swain: For quite some time now, Riot's been cutting down on damage-over-time effects, and has expressed a general dislike for them. The reason? They don't think they're interesting, and would rather prefer damage to be conveyed in bursts. To some extent, stretching damage over too long a period can feel unimpactful, but League is nonetheless the only MOBA that hasn't really handled DoTs well, whereas Smite, HotS, Dota 2, etc. all have means of making DoTs feel powerful and unique in their gameplay (HotS in particular directly shows the damage you take over time on your healthbar). Moreover, this overemphasis on burst has contributed to a game that has become far too bursty overall. Riot should look at how other similar games manage to make DoTs work, and re-implement that on Swain, instead of completely changing his niche.
  • Rework the way Soul Fragments power Demonic Ascension: This definitely boils down to my own personal preference, but my issue with Swain's new ult is that it takes Swain's old ult, multiplies its cooldown by a literal factor of 20, adds in an awkwardly long cast time, and justifies that by adding a health buffer and burst in the end that nobody really asked for. Additionally, Soul Fragments only end up existing to power one component of an ability that, as a baseline, only comes online every 2 minutes. It feels like a wasted opportunity, and like Swain was meant to have a completely different system at first, before partially switching to this one. I think there's a compromise to be had between his old and new ult with the following changes:
  • Remove Demonflare and Demonic Ascension's cooldown, but have the transformation require and consume a Soul Fragment for every few seconds of use: This I think should be the general change, as Swain should be rewarded for landing Soul Fragments by having access to his transformation, which is the cool part of his ult, rather than some generic PBAoE nuke at the end. It would prevent Swain from returning to his old days where he could just stay transformed all the time, while still allowing him to use his transformation much more frequently if he plays well. Additionally, it would also mean he wouldn't have to awkwardly hold on to maximum Soul Fragments just because his ult's still on cooldown (why does he need so many overlapping gates to the same ability anyway)? In order to balance this a little further:
  • Increase the damage/drain accordingly, nerf non-champion sustain as needed: Because the above would mean Swain would be able to access his drain more often, it would make sense to control his healing so that it doesn't let him heal as much from just minions. However, because Swain wouldn't have his power limited by a burst component, he could also afford to have a truly powerful drain for when he decides to use it. Since Swain would be able to use the effect more frequently:
  • Remove the health buffer and delay: If Swain gets to transform much more often, he should probably not gain bonus health each time he transforms, not like it really feels like it gives him all that much protection right now. Additionally, the cast delay is just unnecessarily slow and clunky, and feels frustrating when his clutch-protection fails on a technicality. If the idea is to have him pre-empt when he needs to transform, then putting more emphasis on the drain over time, rather than a piddly health buffer, would already achieve that much more smoothly.

And that's about it from me. There are some other points of contention I have with the new Swain (I feel separating his root from his ground-targeted AoE was unnecessary, I don't like the fact that he got a displacement in an environment saturated with the stuff, and I think he needs at least one basic ability that gives him area denial), but these I think are changes to his visuals, lore and gameplay that wouldn't necessarily require a massive scope of work, but that could nonetheless score very big wins for his community. What do you think?

SwainsGluteCyst2 votes

Game play, I agree up to the ult. I want the ult gone tbh. To much Stat checking for any Drain tank, and if Riot builds items for him, then it will just bust other Champs. Galio, Gragas, ect. All I and others wanted Was him to transform in to a bird demon. It could work like Gnar.

Also With the way Burst work, and the fact we have 4 buttons and a passive to press, DoTs can end up with you playing more around it. Example Galio centers around keeping you in his bubble.

I think you nailed the Visual/Lore out cry. My only addition is for you to look at some famous people of power. They don't look imposing, Cause when they get to an age where Everyone recognizes their strength, they had to spend 20+ years to get to this point.

got to say only Mussolini looks inspiring, yet clearly it is a photo op.

I could pop out more, however goes back to the Awful Jinx Lore update. They said too much. The reason Tolkin's worlds seem so big is he just left you bread crumb after bread crumb. He never described every aspect, he described only one aspect, leaving the rest for imagination. Like the Ents, they where tree people, and there for treated trees like domesticated animals. We never truly found out why, but it make a connection to us. We also Got to hear the Ent females where different moral vales in such a way, they likely created, and taught all races how to farm. However that is a guess, All we can be sure about is it got to a point, the Ents and Entwives just left each other due to hate for each-other's practices, that they doomed the species.

So Riot says they can't see an old man with magic unable to fight, i got to laugh too. (not best example, but only one i can think of at this time, save Gandalf, but too much Tolkien is bad) Like they never read One punch man, and seen Sliver fang. when he is not in battle mode, he walks hunched over like... an old man.

Couldn't agree with you more on what you said about his design, but here are the main points:

"including players who themselves have disabilities" I have Autism and Swain sure as hell was a major inspiration to me. He showed me that no matter what people thought about me I could still rise above.

"Beatrice was a key component to Swain's character that fans loved and closely associated with" I associated with it so much I ended up rescuing Pigeons, becoming vegan and moving 337 miles to Edinburgh, because I couldn't find a place that would let me keep them. So Swain is indirectly responsible for major life changes I've had; I couldn't imagine my life without my birds. Which is why the next part hurts:

"To add insult to injury, Beatrice is still mentioned by Swain as a joke, with him neither knowing or caring who she is." This change is like salt in the wounds for me. Beatrice is no longer Swain's ally, shes a toy to use and abuse (he crushes her during his recall). Beforehand you got the sense that it was a mutually beneficial relationship or a contract similar to Black Butler. So the new dynamic hits me right where it hurts. Not to mention how its f-cked over the story behind Tyrant Swain and to a lesser extent Dragonmaster. Before Tyrant represented Swain at the height of his power, after he achieved what he had set out to do, now hes a possessed puppet, consumed by the demon formally known as Beatrice. So now we only get cool, fully transformed Swain if hes no longer in control, which is BS to the max.

Old Swain will live forever in my heart, but that's all...

new Swain delivers on the tactician fantasy, but the DoT/debuff/sustain playstyle was what made Swain for me; have to agree that another rework is in order, either big or small

SwainsGluteCyst3 votes

Riot themselves said they did not want to work him in to the Tactician theme. they swain more of a front line bruiser. So Each time I see some one say "new Swain delivers on the tactician fantasy" It makes me laugh.

Not to call you out, you are far from the first or last. And with that in mind. Did Riot Succeed at the rework if they hit a goal they clearly stated they themselves where not aiming for?

Troll for Trump3 votes

This happened with every huge gameplay overhaul rework. Old Karma mains felt the same way about "new" karma. Old Yorick/Urgot/Galio (the few that existed) hated having to adapt to the new playstyle. Old swain mains will hate the new playstyle of current Swain.

He is weak, and he could use buffs. That's why, collectively, people may not enjoy playing him. As old swain mains, however, a large part of the dissent probably stems from Riot changing Swain's playstyle from his past iteration, leading to nostalgic cries for a revert.

There are other, smaller things that can easily be fixed without reverting the Swain rework

SwainsGluteCyst1 votes

What you said is true, but the problem is the fact he has so many restrictions build in his kit. If they remove one restriction it can blow him up big time.

For example If his Q goes thru minions then he has better wave clear, and harass. Right now maxing E first seems to be the best. It gives harass, and wave damage to set up your Q clearing wave.

That is just one of his restrictions. It may seem something simple, but look at Ahri's last rework. They removed over all damage form her kit, however the utility it gave her made her win rate skyrocket. So imagine if Swain did not have any of the clear restriction in his kit. He may very well been +60% win rate.

So I would like to not expose the LoL player base with that, and just leave him be and rework him later.

You can say there is nothing founded on My points he will be broken, but ask yourself, why does he have the restriction then? if not to keep him well restricted.

Divewing1 votes

This is a really dumb thing to say I'm sorry.

"What if they removed Azir's cap on how many soldiers he can have out at once?" I mean yeah, but.. They won't.

It's a mechanic of the kit, not an add-on.

Furthermore, unless you are playing Swain mid, instant-waveclear is not a requirement, and given that top lane is Riot's main target lane for him, this is not an issue.

As for Ahri, she was overtuned, not broken. Her numbers were simply the wrong ones, it wasn't some fundamental issue with her kit. Riot wanted her to be a kite-mage, they just overshot initially. Since then Ahri has resurfaced as a result of other changes just like other champions.

I can't really comment on anything else because you've just said he has restrictions but not specified what they were (with exception to his Q)

SwainsGluteCyst1 votes

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. Due to time constants, I left it simple. So let me proceed to flood you with more text.

But first, a side note:

First of all I wanted to point out Riot came out and said He was play test Mid. They had a Goal for him Mid. Like how all the old mains played him, till he got really dated, and he went top cause, lane bully. At most you might remember when a riot employee, i think rickless, said he saw Swain as a top lane back 2-5 years ago. So every time he is played top, it gives me a good cynical chuckle.

If you dis agree, just pop on over to the spotlight. and you will see him mid. Like most champs in spotlights, they are shown in targeted lane, unless you go way back.

End side note.

As for What i was saying, is that Swain's new kit has so much control in order to give him high melee range damage, that they stacked If conditions (restrictions) just to make him get that high reward. However Competitive is known maximize the skill cap. So we get in to the theory of Skill Ceiling can't over come Reward ceiling. Simply put, at max skill you can't do too much. Going to bring up fighting games. Lets say there is a fighter that does no damage unless you hit move 500 of an unbreakable combo, but it is an instant KO. Sure, most people wont be able to use him, but when that one guy who is like a robot plays him, expect him to be unfair. With the way this game is, number of buttons, Riot balance, and the volume of players, getting a very low Reward ceiling compared to fighting game. We saw this with Azir, and are still seeing it.

Now we can get in to restrictions. Swain's kit is Intently built with it. Taking the time to point them out is a waste of time, you need to just spend the time looking at it. But here is a tip, ask what it does. The Q at point blank does not make it clear. in fact you can miss it, and ask where did my health go. A clear design standard that Riot has said they would make. You should be able to know what hit you. Yet his Q, unless you have the volume up, you likely will miss him doing it in a team fight, if some how he closes the gap. That is the biggest clue there was at one point, where his Q dealt damage thru the target. May seem small, but it is by far the best example of the chains. you just need to look, and analyze. hell, they even made Amumu's e his crit animation so you can see him Crit if he ever does.

So, if the tune Swain, to say, one of the most common things I have seen, and that is His E being able to be recalled early. It could very well give him a bigger boost then more damage. However It more raises the skill ceiling, allowing the player to tap more in to the things they can do. Giveing Swain more tricks, ect.

Now I just came back after a week rest, and have heard about some of the Pros playing him. And I need to watch it, cause it sounds like. Swain is getting played as a zoneing artillery Support, and Warden soft CC. Not sure, but if so, even more to my point. there was so many chains put on him, his power is locked, to make sure he ain't rewarded.

Also When Ahri got her Q to give her moment speed, she was not over tuned. It was more less the same damage till late-mid game (if you missed charm), due to the fact people still maxed Q. Just showed you the fact that her Q's back hit became reliable, and she got a safer lane can do for you, over more kill pressure.

forgot, i need to go over hard and soft restrictions, but i am sure you will figure it out.

Hibeki2 votes

Im sad that this is a VGU and not a mini rework, because maybe they could have at some point just reverted the rework.

Honestly, if they kept the visuals but brought the old kit back, i would be COMPLETELY satisfied.

no to toxic2 votes

Saying DoT mages are interesting isnt something subjective. Remember Swain before the mini-rework he got? He just walked up to you and press E. Then he got mini-rework and spammed his Bird all day. So no matter wich version of Swain you got you had him be as interactive as the dummys in practice mode. Lets also not get started on him having infinite mana just preety much removing any kind of agency your lane has.

So yeah they could have made Swain a adc who builds ap and it still would have been better. Except for the visuals. He just is a boring shitty design and the artists who drew it should be ashamed.

SwainsGluteCyst1 votes

I am a little confused by your words, but I will try to answer it as well as i can.

First of all, the Visuals. I do not know if you are mocking the complaints, or agree that it feels... lazy. This version does not have anything in common with old Swain. Old swain's key visuals where, Pet Raven, crippled, and transformed in to big bird. This new version, is just not crippled. If you think so, then 99% of lizards are crippled. Big Bird ult in not there anymore, as they said "it would feel like he loses control" I leave that for others to decide. As for the Pet raven, they are in his Passive, and recall. But from the art work, and how much in the background, It seems to have been an after thought. Hell recall seems like they added raven last min. It looks like they where going to have a random ball of energy come up, and he uses it on his demon hand. The concept Art work I have seen, does not even depict a raven, save his ult form. So I am willing to go out, and say the Artists were told to make, imposing dictator design, and they did not know who it was going to be till later.

As for Game play, Well that is all subjective. Some people like tanks, others like supports, and others like to get pentas. Not everyone likes DoT game play, or slow game play. But Swain is a product of his time. They where churning out champs to make sure they have a 100 different flavors. So What you see with Swain's old Kit was the Fact they just made a ton of auto hit skills. And lets be honest, Riot is making rounds to remove this from the game. If you reworked old swain's spells in to skill shots, Swain's old spells would be more inactive for both players, then most spells. Make Q work like leblace's tether and E, they could have turned that in to a skill shot, say like Ryze Q.

Anyway, Is you got hit Q, you had 2 options. 1 back off, to reduce the damage, or 2 take the damage, to keep harming Swain. It also gave more counter play for you and/or team, to (A) get in range, (B) react to the incoming damage, or (C) skill get off cool downs. Hell at level 1 Swain's Q/E was countered by a potion. That thing everyone can get at the start of the game. As for Swain's E, it is just like Vlad's Ult, if you want to do more damage Swain Had to go ham. It boosted his AA so he wanted to go Ham during the 3 seconds, resulting him staying in harms way if he did.

Now on to What they could have done with his skills. I want to note I am not an expert at building kits, so expect... bad design. First of all. Lets combine Victor's old Ult, and Ori Q. So for new Swain, when he uses Q, he loses 100 mana, but for 30 seconds has a 100 unit size bird storm ball that he can direct any play with in 600 units of himself. if he moves out of range, the ball will follow him. Give it 10 true damage per sec, removes 1 Mr per sec, and a 1% ap ratio. I am cool with that. Then on to W. Lets make it plant the Q in one place. It last for 5 seconds dealing the normal Q damage. During that 5 seconds, each time it damages a opponent, it doubles in size and gets a charge. after the 5 seconds, it burst forward, and makes any opponent hit by it deal less damage for 5 seconds. Amount based off charge. I think this is impossible to balance, however it shows that with a DoT you can really make the game play about the spell. ( you want to keep them in the spell for a bigger and better effect). that is all i can think up off the top of my head. However I think I get the point across.

If not tho, the point is, DoT spells can be played with far more, then the generic Burst spells. Because of the very nature of Burst, that is it. Unless it has CC. Then it adds something your team can play around with that is not "did it or did it not just kill the target?''

As for the unlimited Mana, Are not there high elo players complain that Riot has made some champ mana cost so cheap, they might as well not have mana? Mana in this game is not like DotA, so I find that argument pointless. Because as we have seen with URF mode, worrying about can or can I not use my spells is just not fun for most players. So Riot has responded in kind.

The fact that Teemo isn't on the DoT list saddens me.

SwainsGluteCyst1 votes

This actually taps in to the vein of New Vs Old. As we know Teemo it top. So the reason he was not included is cause the old Swain mains remember Swain as a mid laner. However around season 3 he started to go top, cause wave clear kept hurting him. Then when he was mini-rework, he was put in to top lane. In came the Newer mains cause at that point he was all about his ult.

So It seemed when they said he was play tested for mid, he was going to go back tot he roots of older swain, then we got this.

Fear the Kayn1 votes

Old swain was pretty annoying to lane against, which I think is why they went away from the DoT mage. The change I feel he needs most is a movepseed buff when he ults.

SwainsGluteCyst1 votes

True, he was a lane bully. That is why he was reworked. However most of the older mains where willing to see the ULT completely go, with the sole exception of him transforming in to a Bird demon.

Reason was due to it was a drain tank pattern, and even Riot agreed on some of the issues. Needed too much Stat checks, Health, damage, resist, movespeed. Yet they kept it.

As for buffs, I say hold off on any buff till 2 months after he is out. If any buff comes, just double damage on his Q vs minions.

Swain's win rate literally shoot up the high the elo you go. Not kidding, it's almost an exponential relationship in this regard.

The problem isn't really that Swain sucks, it's more to do with the fact most people have never played or seen Swain and the some among few left who did play Swain refuses to adapt to the new Swain (who really doesn't have that different of a play emphasis compared to the old iteration). So you see a seemingly collective QQ, but it really isn't the problem of Swain per se.

Ifneth1 votes

I’ve played against a Swain smurf, and I see why, but I just don’t feel the same sense of fear and dread around the new Swain. I think,

(On getting hit with nevermove) “Oh, great, now he’s got me in this thing again. I’ll take some damage but back off.”

(On getting spotted by vision of empire) “Wow, of course he used that to follow me through the jungle.”

(On seeing his ult) “Looks like he pushed the 1v3 button. Better back off until it stops.”

The old Swain made me say, “Well, I outrange him by quite a few Teemos, but boy if he ever gets on me or scales into late-game, will that be—HOLY COW DEMON!”

Now he just looks like a bored formalwear model. :(

SwainsGluteCyst1 votes

Win rate is not the Goal here for the old Swain mains, Game play is, If he was at sub 40% winrate, but played a Dot/Debuff you would never see me, however that does not apply to others, tho at this point if my fraction had to choose that to this, then they would not complain. As for the newer Swain mains... more true to them.

However when you look at the the higher Elos they are playing him less. Almost like the general crowd are giving up on him, leaving the Mains, who are putting time in him to well... to get better at him.

Personally, I LOVE new Swain.

Reworks cost time and money. Dear player, be reasonable.

SwainsGluteCyst1 votes

True, not asking for it any time soon(time issue). NuNu, Pathon, and others should come after this. However at some point they will rework all the older champs, leaving room for Swain. Ryze has also skipped the line soo many times, so clearly Swain has more class. Also I expect the base model will be unchanged cause I doubt they will redo the visuals again. (money issue)

However if they where going to rework the game play to Dot/debuff they need to well... make new spells and animations.

But lets be honest. If they don't rework him, then he is just going to lose players, resulting in another rework, like Quinn, cause " he is not ageing well" excuse.

I do feel bad for the actual swain players, they just deleted your champion and released a new one that doesnt play or looks or sounds anything like old swain, in fact it looks more like a vlad rework than anything else, they killed swain and released a new champ with the same name, basically.

They should just revert everything, old swain did not deserve to die for this.
