Lets Talk About Smite Toplane

OK so we have seen the smite/tp in the toplane in competive, but what are your thought on in nonpro play. i have tryed it out on a couple champs like jax and irealia. With those two i have had a lot of success. Needless to say im getting the cinderhulk/skirmishers combo.

In my opinion smite is just a new variable in top lane. If you spend enough time playing against it you'll learn how to counter it. It's definitely a strong choice right now, but it's hardly strong enough to force a meta shift.

Except it HAS forced a meta shift. A jungle item and summoner is so spell that it's now optimal to take it top lane. It's downright broken.

Does more damage than ignite, reduced 20% damage incoming, much lower cooldown, allows you to jungle camps, cinderhulk is 2250g whereas sunfire is 2600g.

Yeah it is pretty strong. It is the perfect item for those carry type top laners who look to jump in and kill the enemy adc. Not only are you reducing their dmg output to the point where they are not doing anything, but you are doing true damage to them too. idk if it is truly op tho, i really havent seen too many people use it and just destroy, for instance we see only like one team using it in the EU LCS and when they are using it we arent seeing them tear through thier enemies. However we are seeing some great use of it in the LPL, as a matter of fact we are seeing it in close to if not ever series. But here is a thought... If the item is so good why are we not seeing it on more than just one champ? Pros for the most part are only using it on Shyvana. Do you guys think we are going to be seeing it on more carry type top laners?

However, you don't have Skirmisher's at first. Someone with Ignite will have more early kill pressure, plus Grevious Wounds.

And giving up either Flash or TP is really hindering. No Flash means you're weak to ganks. What happened in the first LCS game this season with Ignite/TP Hecarim? He was camped hard and was useless. Lack of smite means you're food for the jungler.

And if you choose to not take TP, you have a loooooong walk to get to those dragon fights, not to mention the usefulness of being able to TP late game to a pushed tower after you won that teamfight at baron, or TPing back to base to hold minions off while your team pushes an inhib.

I believe that in solo queue, TP is not nearly as important. Especially if you have good knowledge of map rotations, you don't even need TP if you can convincingly win your lane.

Also, I don't agree that someone with ignite will have more early kill pressure. What smite gives you is the ability to do a camp or two easily at level 1, and TP to lane with the exp and level advantage, so you actually have the advantage. Even if you don't, you can play appropriately and soon enough you will have your skirmisher's. They can't cheese you even with ignite if you're up in levels.

You can do a camp first without using smite, that's not an issue.

If you're, say, Darius or Renekton, Ignite will be better, since your early aggression will give you Ignite kill potential.

If you play aggressively right, then you'll have more gold, and better items.

Or you could bait out the smite. I was playing Renekton with Flash/TP VS Zac with Smite/TP. I went in for harass, he smited me, I Slice+Dice away until it wears off. Easy.

You CAN do a camp first on some champions without smite, you can't on others. Even if you can, it'll most likely be sub optimal and not worth doing it. You may do it too slowly and get to lane too late, miss out on exp. You may be able to do it quickly, but then subsequently be started an undesirable skill for laning with.

Sure ignite gives you kill pressure, but you know what gives you even more kill pressure? Being a level up and zoning someone until you're two levels up.

Sure you can also bait the smite, but they can just as easily hold it. Jump on me as Renekton and stun me and dash away. I'll just hold onto smite and then, assuming I'm playing someone like Jax or Maokai or Hecarim, jump right on your ass and destroy you in the trade as you dash out. That, or hold onto smite even longer and effectively zone you from the minion wave.

It isnt optimal to take it top lane. It is VIABLE to take it top lane. There is a very big difference between the 2.

New emerging strategy, uncultivated, yet is crushing competitive matches everywhere. It's in nearly every game in the LPL.

If you want challengers smite, it's decent.

If you're only getting cinderhulk... you might want a better summoner spell. Cinderhulk only boosts bonus hp by 25%, so unless you're going to buy warmogs or a lot of health it might not be worth it if you don't plan on being a late-game tank and/or bruiser and sacrificing early game advantages.

There is a nice article talking about it

In my opinion, Cinderhulk is not what is too strong on top lane; it is the skirmisher enchantment. A pseudo exhaust ignite with one third of the cooldown is way too strong top.

This is a good aritcle! you were right. So why are we only seeing it on the likes of Shyvana and hecerim? I understan the others, they get a larger benifit of the cinderhulk enchantment. and now that i think about it, i understand why hercrim is getting the love, but not shyvana. She wasnt meta before this because she offers no cc, so why arent we seeing more maokais and hypertanks?

It's actually simpler than it seems.

Mobility. Hecarim and Shyvana have enough innate mobility/dashes to not need flash. They can sacrifice flash for smite, and other champions aren't so inclined to do so. HOWEVER, this is mostly for high-level teamplay too.

For example, TP is not necessary nor is it always optimal in solo queue, so top laners can even go smite flash in solo queue. It's all about whether they can stop parroting pro players smite+tele first, or whether cinderhulk and skirmisher's gets nerfed first.
