Why can't a friendly Talm Kench eat Malzahar?

I played a game where a friendly Talm could not eat Malzahar. Is that a weird interaction between Malzahars' spell shield or was their a glitch in my game?

Would that work with allied Sivir Nocturne item 3102 item 3814 too?

Hmm perhaps...can anyone confirm? I was under the impression that it was a bug but if anyone has tested the Malz/Kench interaction and these other champs/items let us know. I'll look out for these match-ups as I come across them.
