MMR strikes me as a unperfected system

I'm all for a system setup that helps to accurately place you against an appropriate set of opponents. But things like this are ridiculous, and it happens a lot for us. Three of the guys in this game aren't even level 30, yet 4 unranked players and 1 gold are placed against 2 silvers, 2 plats and a diamond? I mean, cmon. MMR seems broken. Those guys are high in the rankings for a reason. They have a vast amount of experience over the lower levels, along with runes. I can't see this matchup as being remotely fair, how does MMR find this to be an even game? I've been placed against plat 5 guys who walked all over our entire team like we were bots. If anyone has a square explanation as to why this is considered a good matchup, I'd love to hear it. Otherwise, ffs fix matchmaking.

There is a different MMR rating for ranked and normals that are completely unrelated. But the whole system pretty much sucks

Level 29's only have 1 less rune slot than level 30's, albeit a quint. It really isn't that much of an advantage. I take it one or more of your friends are pretty good and have high normal game mmr. I had a diamond friend who used to complain when facing diamonds on their mains when he was playing normals on his lvl 24 smurf. If you are good you will face good players.

unperfected isn't even a word.

Look at this. Our Nexus was destroyed after 10 minutes.

Normal MMR, when compared to ranked MMR, tends to largely be skewed. People play with friends in normals, from varying skill levels, people can duo with anyone in normals, people troll more (and care less about it resulting in less complaining) in normals, and there's no promos in normals. All in all, normal MMR tends to be more accurate though.
