Zoe Q Balance

Hi guys, I don't know if this has already been thought of but I have an idea for Zoe; Right now everyone is crying and hollering about her Q, and the ridiculous damage that it does. I think a solution to this wouldn't be to nerf the damage directly, but to make the mana used for each cast represent the damage output.
Think about it, if she casts right in front of her and travels no distance to farm minions and what not, it shouldn't cost that much mana, but if she casts it down lane and snipes somebody, it should cost more mana. The mana cost should be relative to the damage output. There should still be a base cost, but there needs to be something to reign her in, because right now it seems totally oppressive to be laning against her, and if you make mistake you lose 90% of your life. Making the mana cost based on the damage would be a healthy way of "nerfing" the damage, but not making her irrelevant.
Another thing that I think would be helpful is providing some sort of indicator for people playing against Zoe, that shows where Zoe is aiming her Q. I don't know if it will make a huge difference however, but I don't see what it would hurt.
