An Easier Solution to Solo Lanes Abusing Support Items

Why not just give the support items a linking feature, like is used on Knight's Vow or Zeke's? The gold generation portion of the item only works when you are within range of your bond buddy. Doesn't that solve the problem and otherwise leave the items alone?

What does this change intend to solve? To keep bandit on support items?

Yeah, basically. The reason listed for the changes to the items in the patch notes is that solo lanes are still taking the item. The bonding would make it unusable for solo lanes while still staying the same for support class. Of course, if they intend to get rid of bandit entirely then they have succeeded in that.

I miss the +1 gold. Makes a huge difference and I've really noticed a drop in my gold gen as support.

Another idea I had was why not make it only available if you're in the support role? Certain items are only available on certain champs, I don't see why they can't restrict the items to the role iteself.

Here's the problem: how are you going to easily have a key for binding that item when it also needs to use wards later?

That's a valid point that I hadn't thought of. What about just making it have a required champ in range then, sort of like an Abyssal Mask aura but requiring an allied champ?

I think that's a decent idea. Probably spelltheif's and coin could be balanced around that (relic already is for the gold gen, to a certain extent), but it would definitely be a bit clunky while you ally was dead or while you roamed.

Any solution is going to be a bit weird, because the entire concept of support items is a bit weird. I don't have a huge problem with the changes that they are proposing already, but I definitely see the clunkiness of it.
