Ive been playing on and off since around last September, and ive just about only played Garen since. I just recently watched a video about how I can improve my gameplay with learning my matchups better, and learning to manipulate my wave better. I've been working on this a LOT lately and I feel like I've gotten pretty decent at the game now! Now I'm working on dying a little less, and that's going... eh, ive died maybe 1-3 times less per game, but I've also gotten like 5 less kills :(

Another thing I've been trying to learn is building items properly and take better runes against certain matchups (eg, Glacial Augment vs Ranged(and singed), Phase Rush vs Tanks and bruisers etc...). I've also started getting different boots and late game items based on who i'm against and who's getting fed.

Hopefully there is more things I can work on to get better ^^ If you guys think there is anything I need to know to improve at top lane, garen or anything else really PLEASE let me know, I'm pretty newly level 30 and im too scared to get into ranked just yet, especially with being told Garen isn't good in ranked and he's all I can play. I'll be going to bed after this so dont expect a quick reply, I will reply at my earliest convenience though! Love you all and thanks in advance. <3

“Garen isn’t good in ranked”

Bro... if you play him correctly you could literally climb to Diamond with him

Just work on lane/minion control and top lane mechanics in general, if you want to get better at him 👍🏼

If you’re doubting Garen’s power, just watch this... https://youtu.be/jeyc6fGresM

Any champion can be one tricked to the top of the ladder if you are good enough.

Grasp will outclass everything else the majority of the time, followed by predator. Everything else has a use so niche you shouldn't bother learning them until your macro is refined.

How you build your 2 core items can have a huge impact on your lane, also I start cloth 4 every game to get early tabi which seems underwhelming but t2 boots are very important for Garen.

A good first back looks something like this, without having gotten a kill

item 1028 item 1028 item 1036 item 2031 or item 3047 item 1036 item 2031

Q max Garen at level 6 has kill pressure on most top laners, with just 1 longsword. If you're going to buy a sheen on your first back make god damn sure you can afford a few potions.

2 items I buy fairly often are item 3512 and item 3193. I'll buy zzrot when I'm vs. another split pusher or when the enemy team isn't properly responding to my own split push. Stoneplate is more rare and I buy it when I'm the main tank but can't afford to build heavy tank items, don't forget that Stoneplate doesn't interact with true damage so the villain is still a sitting duck.

Don't let so called Garen counters tilt you, if you're patient and learn the proper tactics any Quinn or Teemo you fight will regret their choice, until you begin to get matched against better opponents. The hardest match ups I face a lot are Urgot, Illaoi, and Shen, though Shen isn't tough I just get tilted that I can't kill the crab bastard.

Garen is the strongest or at least one of the strongest topers right now. The only thing that makes him not that great is pretty high ban rate and pick rate which means that you probably won't get him in every ranked.

I recommend you to learn how to play more champions. If you want as easy to play as garen then maybe try darius or something just a little bit harder like yorick. These two are top tier champions like garen and will be your backup in case garen is banned or already picked.
