Top lane champions current help

Currently I am in a group for a tournament on Nov. 15th at my college. I am playing top lane which I am fairly decent at. However, I am not sure which champs are priority at a high at the moment and would be beneficial in competitive play. Also, if these champs are picked what are good counter picks. I know skill is taken into account but please give me your input everyone.

Honestly, you are probably better off picking champions you are familiar with. However, if you don't really play anyone top lane I would recommend: Irelia since she can lane against bruisers and ranged champions well, can be played like a tank or an assassin, and is difficult to push out of lane. Maokai has good sustain, tankiness, and CC. He can survive and farm against many champions and easily set up ganks with his jungler. DrMundo has great sustain in lane, safe farming with cleavers, good mixed damage, and is tanky as heck.

Ryze and Gnar are also contested picks, but I'm not sure how that will change with the latest patch or the new jungle. Nidalee is a strong lane bully when built as an AD bruiser (Sheen->TF or IBG, Defensive Items, BotRK) and good for split pushing.

Also, might be a personal favourite but if your enemy picks a melee bruiser against you in lane (Zed, Riven, Kha'zix, Wukong, Xin Zhao, etc), you can pick Taric and crush them in lane. You build Iceborn Gauntlet, Sunfire Cape, Locket of the Iron Solari and Randuin's Omen and they can't really hurt you while you wreck them. Not exactly the best choice, but I always find it funny.
