Muting a player should also mute their pings, more often than not muting a player only results in them realizing you muted them, so they spam pings constantly to troll further, forcing you to either turn ping volume off making the potentially useful pings from your team easy to miss or making you just deal with the constant trolling which is likely to tilt you pretty quickly
EpicPizzaMaster1 votesI mute all every game, however pings save me at least twice a game from ganks (sometimes i forget to look at the minimap or my ward expires) so it would do more harm to us than good.

I have vivid memories of a poppy support who after 5mins in called us all noobs, then went on to do their own thing regardless of our requests. Apparently she muted all of us and as a result was completely unaware of what we were doing because she had no map awareness.
Granted that's a specific and rare example.
