Ranked AFK loss prevention

Mr Acoustic··1 votes·1,240 views

Why is it that there is still no AFK loss prevention in ranked? I mean, we're a few seasons in, we've made a lot of progress, and I was real excited about the new season coming up, and now because 4 out of 6 of the provisional games I've played have had someone AFK in them, I'm going to be placed in low bronze and there is nothing I can do about it. I would understand if I had done poorly in all of my games, but that's not the case. I will be put into bronze and never be able to get out because either the consequences for leaving a ranked game are not severe enough, or people just don't care.

If you don't deserve bronze you'll get out of bronze. Lets say there is an afk prevention system, the second a game goes south someone afk's killing any chance of comeback ruining the experience and then other team secures a win, while your team faces no consequences, everyone would be diamond at that point.

This. Bad players would exploit such a system.

Real Answer:

Because it's stupidly easy to abuse and you would, based upon what you have described, have a worse experience than what you already have had.

Real talk: It sounds like you're talking about "ELO hell" and this just ain't fact. Everyone has had bad games, and everyone loses games because this is a team game. Sorry but, Everyone, and I do mean everyone, has had games with AFKs, trolls, Disconnects, lag whatever. Again, real talk, I've had provisional worse than yours for exactly those reasons but I never got placed in Bronze because I didn't deserve to be there based upon my records. Riot already knows about this suggestion or that suggestion but they've already been answered, and tested and not implemented because they would not work. Sorry, if it's not what you're looking for. But it's the truth.

were you like diamond or high plat last season? because, news flash, 75% or so of ranked players weren't even gold, and the promos for prior gold and below this season are more about which division of bronze you're in. He's lost 4, he's headed for bronze for sure.

I think the OP was talking about people who are afk from the start of the game. People who for whatever reason fail to load in resulting in a 4 v 5. Rarely is such a game winnable and even more rare is such a game being enjoyable. its a 20 minute waste of your time, just so you can be further punished for not having the skill to get matched with someone who's going to actually play. Worse still is when you get so lucky that 2 or even 3 people fail to load in resulting in a 2 or 3 v 5 that you are then punished for not winning. And gods forbid you actually leave a 2 v 5 match! everyone should be forced to waste their time on hopeless causes.

There is no system in the world that cannot be abused. This is not an excuse to ignore the problem.

Riot is large enough that nearly everything gets decided by committee.

That leads to the convoluted game balance ideas you've seen so far as well as a failure to address issues like these.

That's the only realistic explanation for not addressing this at least two seasons ago.

Disagree. If this were implemented, people would abuse it. Say my duo and I were playing, and losing badly. He could leave, I would get no lp loss, and then we could keep playing with half the lost lp that we would otherwise get.

Even if it isn't abused, I made a post above saying that it biases the whole system. People leave games when they are losing. That means ALL the people on that team would lose anyway, and should lose lp. That's not the case every time, but it is the majority of times, I would bet my life on it. People don't leave when they're winning by a landslide.

Anyway, this means that people lose lp less often. This would contribute to people getting carried to tiers they don't belong in, and make the game worse for the good players. It isn't going to happen.

Does your friend enjoy bans? Because that's how leaverbuster gives you bans.

I don't know that it's strict enough. If it were, I don't think AFKs would be that much of a problem to begin with.

{quoted} That's the only realistic explanation

Really? How about the explanation that has been given many times in the past, as well as by many people.

It's not there because it's a flawed idea that is stupidly easy to abuse. Which would consequently make things worse. Believe it or not, people who work with something everyday as their job do actually know a thing or two on occasion about their job. The aware of this idea but is really easy for even me, who doesn't work there nor is invested in this game to know why it doesn't.

I always enjoy how people say they have an AFK/Rager/Troll on THEIR team. When the statistically it is more likly to have one the other team.

KaisadiIIa1 votes

Statistically both teams have the same chance of having one AFK/Rager/Troll, because, statistically, you can be one of them.

So, yeah, if you NEVER leave, go AFK or rage, your team have less chance of having one of these but, let's be serious, almost everyone claims that they never rage or troll but then they always rage "because X", flame (since you can flame because they are feeding, of course, that doesn't count) and troll because they are angry to another troll.

And AFK is something we can't prevent, even with a good PC and Internet connection, I'm sure you have been AFK for whatever reason you couldn't control at least once.

If you are raging, going afk, or trolling you are the problem. End of story.

I don't care about your computer. If you have ANY issues, don't play league. Play something single player until you get your stuff working. I don't care about what the other team is does to you. Take responsibility for **your **actions.

Use that logic with anywhere else and see how far it gets you.

So when stupid kids try to play near an electricity tower, they get electrocuted to die (true story) and light shuts down in your entire county, it's your fault?

Seth Lightheart1 votes

Yup, because that happens every other weekend. Quit going to the extremes to attempt to prove your point.

KaisadiIIa1 votes

Pfff... you missed the whole point. I give up.

Seth Lightheart1 votes

I understand your point, I just reject it. There are sometimes things that are out of your control, those are outliers (and not the point), it is your responsibility to be accountable for your actions. Not in just league but life.

I don't care how amazing of a person you are. Can you do the job? No? GTFO

Loss prevention is only applicable and enabled when there are server wide problems.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

Because there's a bias. People often afk when they get mad and you are already losing. Loss prevention would reward the community at large for leaving games that weren't going well. I understand your frustration, but I can't envision a way to implement this that wouldn't be totally toxic for ranked.

I'm currently Bronze 3, Climbing, slowly but still climbing. Do I deserve Bronze? Hell yes. I forget to ward, check minimap, Stay for extra cs, I don't participate in all team fights, I know what I do wrong but still try and improve on it. (Just recently started using my summoner 12 to gank lanes/team fighting instead of getting back to lane. (In the top lane of course.) Let's just all try and improve.

The actual answer: you can only have "loss prevention" if there is also "win prevention" for the advantaged team. Otherwise you break Ranked over time.

This would be unfair to apply in the middle of a match, so it could only realistically be done if someone is absent right at the beginning of a match (which is what DOTA2 does).

That said, I think they should do what DOTA2 does in this case - if someone is gone for the first 5 minutes the match doesn't count for anyone (except the absent player as a loss), everyone else can quit out and join another one.

At the VERY least there should be an early surrender allowed for the shorthanded team.
