Making GP more competitive as a top pick

I feel like he would be a better pick if his utility could be reduced and his 1v1 capabilities improved.

How about removing the heal on W and adding a dmg reduction that would decay over time? Or having his passive deal bonus dmg if GP strikes his target with an auto attack before it wears off?

I personally wouldn't mind having his bonus gold, allies bonus stats or ult range decreased in exchange.

Thoughts, suggestions?

QoL buff to his passive: Make it Snare at 3 stacks with a ~8 second cooldown on targets after they get snared.

QoL Buff to his W and E: remove Cast time, so he doesn't stop moving to cast them

QoL FIX: make him NOT stop moving when casting ANY of his spells. Currently, if u issue a movement command, then cast ult, W or E, he will forget the movement command u issued.

Having an actual passive would be a good start.

I've come to appreciate his passive after a while. It's primarily an early game passive, which allows you to win most lvl. 1-2-3 (mostly 1) duels since at those levels the damage is interesting and the slow quite helpful to finish them off. Afterwards it does much less, but that's because of RITO. It used to do 5 + (lv.) damage instead o 3 + (lv.) and could stack to up to 5 times instead of three (for 400 ~ magic damage + 35 % slow at full stacks late game instead of todays 180 ~ + 21 %). Anyways, I'd gladly give it away for any form of CC stronger than slows xD The idea of rooting people at 3 stacks expressed by Zazusha is interesting indeed.

If it depended on me, I'd trade E's active (but not the passive movement speed, which is iconic and nice), the "global"ness of his ult (giving it Pantheon's ult range, perhaps) and maybe his passive for some form of relevant CC and increased dueling potential (maybe in the form of damage). Should his Critplank identity preserved, I'd like it to receive some more consistency (perhaps in the form of passive crit. chance, increased Q crit. chance or the likes).

The problem with gp (and lane pantheon) is that they're melee champions whose main gimmick is that they occasionally get to pay mana to use a slightly stronger ranged autoattack. They don't have the mobility to stay in melee and auto against ranged opponents, they don't have particularly good cc, and they can't build tanky and still do meaningful damage. So they're basically slightly tankier ranged guys who have a really long cooldown on their autos. Raising the question "why wouldn't I just pick a guy with a real ranged autoattack/more than 1 ranged ability?"
