The Problem of Grinding in Bronze and Silver

The problem with grinding in low elo is that if you look up videos or tips of how to get out of it, they (for the most part) tell you to play a role that you can carry on. In order of ability to carry from highest to least likely to: jungle -> mid -> adc -> top -> supp (top and adc being interchangeable depending on the meta). Instead of telling players to hone their skills/mechanics in a certain role, on a small pool of champs, and practicing to get better at the game in general. This mentality (on top of the I need to be flashy and center of attention mentality) causes a large skew in roles being played, with support being the least played role. This is a problem because if a lot of these players are playing roles that you can carry when they're autofilled to a another role and don't know what they're supposed to do in that lane, causes people to either dodge queue because they don't want to play it (this causes another problem in which a person who gets their preferred role can be subjected to getting autofilled because of dodgers) or feed in game. This overall causes dissatisfaction and toxicity. Imagine having to go through multiple queue's just for someone to feed and lose you a game or to not get the role you wanted after you previously got it. As an adc main, I can say this ruins bot a lot of the time (aside from my own goofs that ruin the lane). On top of being a role where you constantly have to work in tandem with a random person with different play styles game by game, it doesn't help that I get a support that got autofilled to the role and doesn't know how to play the lane or the match up and ends up feeding, intrinsically causing me to get behind and/or feed as well.

Right now I have two ideas that could possibly help this problem of autofilled roles or lack players in a certain role: Getting rid of autofill in low elo. Have the main focus of low elo to be to hone your skills/mechanics in your two preferred roles on a small pool of champs and getting better at the game. Once you get out of low elo you'll be subjected to autofill, generally I believe if you're Gold+, your basic mechanics should translate to any role and you should to be able to play any role without feeding. The downsides of this is longer queue times in low elo in return for getting one of your guaranteed roles and once you get out of low elo if you get autofilled you might be lacking in other roles still.

My second idea is to change the requirements in order to play ranked. Right now I'm pretty sure it's the same as to when I started and you only need to own a certain number of champs to play ranked. Change this to, in order to play ranked you must have at least 4-5 champs from each role with level 4 or 5 mastery on them. This would cause players to have a fair amount of knowledge and games on at least 20 champs out of the 141 champs that we currently have before they even start ranked. This would lead them to being able to play any role competently even if autofilled. This could also cut down on smurfing because who would go through that process multiple times just to troll/beat up on not as skilled players? The downsides of this is that some players might see this as tedious and turn players away from ranked in general. However, my solution to that is that its only implemented for new/low elo players in order to play ranked. For example, if you're Gold+ you shouldn't be subjected to this requirement and if you want to be jack of all trades so you can at least play every role competently, is entirely up to you. I think this idea would work especially now that Riot is introducing the new Iron tier which could help players learn the game even more and stress the importance of each role.

TL;DR Get rid of autofill in low elo so players can focus on honing their skills in their two preferred roles and the game in general or change the requirements to play ranked to having at least 4-5 champs from each role with at least level 4 or 5 mastery on them so they can play any role even if autofilled.

Sincerely, An ADC main who's tired of getting shitty autofilled supps

PS. Shout out to the autofilled players who play their roles well PPS. Shout out to all the actual support mains out there, you are appreciated <3

in bronze you dont need adc or support. Pick two divers/skirmishers/assassins in bot lane and build damage on both of them. Its called positive competitions

There's an argument for removal of autofill at all elos. As bad news for you, the difference between supp mains and fills gets very very apparent at higher elo (although a higher number of supp mains means that those fills sometimes go to other roles). I can usually tell an autofill, and it turns into an easy lane since they have no idea how to control lane flow when they can't control the wave like mid or top.

4-5 champs per role would make it prohibitively hard to get into ranked, massively increasing the time commitment.

Ultimately, the system doesn't effect your climb much. If you're not a supp main, then there's an even chance that the autofill is on the enemy team vs your team, so it becomes how you play it. As a supp main, autofill gives you a lot more power at low elos, then at high you hope to God your adc isn't autofilled when you play an adc reliant supp. (also, anyone who says that supp doesn't carry hard doesn't know how the role works. Supps control the lane and are enablers for a team; a good supp makes even a monkey look like a decent adc)

If you remove autofill in low elo q times will rise and less people will play the game so riot will never do that :(

But there is a solution to the problem and the solution is this: if some picks their preferred role as support, make it so that no one on their team is autofilled. More people will play support and so there would be less autofill in general.

To be fair I've been playing jungle a fair bit though to get out of bot lane. Some ADC's just stand really far back, never trade and have never seen a pro play their champ in soloq before. Caitlyn doesn't use her range advantage to sit 650 units from the wave but silver and gold adc's do it...
