How do I freeze waves, create large waves, and slow push?

Explain it to me like I'm 5. (I've watched videos and didn't understand.)

How to freeze lane = killing the same minion at the same time your minion dies.

Example: Enemy laner kills your Melee minion, you kill the enemies Melee minion to keep lanes even. Enemy minion kills your cannon minion, so you kill the enemies cannon minion, etc, etc.

How to create large waves = let lane push to you and freeze it there.

Example: All your minions died in the middle of wave, the enemy has 2 minions pushing to your tower. You stop the minions by walking up to them and taking aggro so the tower doesnt kill them. Your minions come to the 2 enemy minions. Last hit the 2 enemy minions at the lowest health you can. Enemy minion wave is coming at your side of the tower. Now your next wave of minions is coming. Now you have around 9 minions against 4 enemy minions. You can do this for about 3 waves and get 14 minions in your wave.

How to slow push = If you mean to slow push so you can roam, then you just kill the enemy caster minions (ranged minions), and the wave will push slowly beens you have minion advantage.

Example: 6 minions meet against 6 minions, you kill 3 caster minions, now the enemy only has 3 melee minions that have the most health but least damage. You will have about 5 minions by the time they kill the 3 enemy melee minions. Then you will get your next wave of minions and boom, 11 minions against 6 minions. Thus the slow push begins.

Some important concepts

  • Minions come out of each base periodically in a fashion that mirrors each other (blue wave spawns at same time as red wave, they both spawn cannons at the same time).
  • When the minions meet in the middle they will start to fight.
  • If one side has more minions, then it will kill the enemy minions faster and take less damage, so when the next minion wave arrives the same side will outnumber the other side by even more and push even faster. Minion waves that are pushing will maintain their push all the way to the enemy tower.
  • If the minions on each side are even, then the wave will usually start to push out towards the river as the allied side's wave will reach and reinforce their minions earlier. The wave will continue to push past river all the way into the enemy turret since by the time it reaches the river it will have more minions than the enemy.

Your specific questions:

  1. Freeze: If the enemy minions outnumber your allied minions by at least 3 on your side of the river, then you can possibly (it's a little fuzzy at exactly 3 minions) set up and hold a freeze by only last hitting minions when they're about to die. If the enemy minions outnumber your's by more than 4 then the wave will start to push towards you unless you thin out the wave by dealing some extra damage. Freezing outside of your tower is a good way to maintain a 'safe' position for farming even if the enemy champion is not in lane affecting the wave, as well as preventing the wave from crashing into your turret which could cause it to start pushing towards the enemy turret and building a wave for them to easily catch for a lot of xp and gold.
  2. Create large waves: Slow push. Alternatively, be Yorick.
  3. Slow push: When the wave is even or pushing, only last hit and deal no extra damage to the wave. Your minions will start pushing but they will do it slowly so more allied waves will eventually join the fight and make the wave bigger. The slower the push, the bigger the wave will be when it eventually crashes into a tower.

Slow pushing can be good because it will mean a lot of damage to the tower and you may be able to time the crash at a time when the enemy doesn't want to split resources to catch the wave. But it can also be bad because following that wave costs you a lot of time unless you let it push on its own (the slowest possible push), which means that you/your team will miss out on all the xp and gold from the enemy minion waves it plows through. Also, if the enemy manages to catch and kill the big wave you built up then they get a huge chunk of xp and gold even though they just spent a lot of time away from the lane.

If it's right outside your tower, you need the enemy to have 4 extra ranged minions to create an endless freeze. To create large waves, you break your freeze by slow pushing. You slow push by having a wave that's gonna push by itself and you don't speed up their pushing (meaning don't attack the minions)

How do I get them to get 4 extra minions? How do I get a wave to push by itself?

If you want a hard freeze, you have to let the enemy wave push to just outside your tower range and then tank it without attacking them until your wave shows up. This is the only way to hard freeze that I know of, so be prepared to take some damage from minions. Generally you can only do this in bottom lane with a support who can tank the wave or a healer/shielder support or in top lane if you are ahead and don't have to worry about your enemy attacking you when you do it. To push by itself, you just need to make sure that your wave has 1 more minion than the enemy wave.

Watch this guy. In most of his game play videos he talks about it during the game so you get to see it in action often too. Definitely a good channel to watch of you want to improve

Go into a custom and smack a minion a couple times when laning starts. It'll now start slow pushing as overtime one opposing minion will fall faster the difference will "snowball"

If you pull creep aggro this can also happen as they hit you and not your minion wave. That's why trading aggressive or pushing aggressive puts you in enemy territory which gives you momentary exp and minion advantages but puts you in ganking risk.

A different thing: assuming two waves equal power then position matters. Unless in the very middle of the lane on the map it'll get minions from one nexus sooner creating a snowball effect. If you ignore an equal wave in allied territory it'll stack up. This is generally bad early game because you lose more gold and exp compared to your opponent who lost less. But once gold and exp matters less this can be good as a large stacked wave creates map pressure and can pull enemies apart on the map or take or allow you to siege towers better.

This is important in macro play which for most players they don't care, but it can be useful if you're really strategic minded and coordinate allies with pings like I am at my best. For the most part only LCS players game that but don't underestimate the advantage it can get in setting up favorable fights and collecting rewards from said fights. I wouldn't really worry about all this though if I were still learning...

But if your macro play is good you can lose fights but they don't matter and make every fight you win rake in the objectives.

I'm throwing out my guess, by all means prove me wrong.

I think to freeze you have to move in front of enemy wave, get their attention then lead them to one of your minion, resulting in 6 enemy minions focusing fire on one of yours. As a result your minions die quicker and you'll end up with a few enemy ranged minions surviving after your wave dies.

As for pushing, you actually target and kill off enemy ranged minions, so it's just tanky melee minions who do weak damage left alive, and they'll be slowing your own wave and eventually your 2nd wave will meet up with your first remaining wave.
