Item Varity - Counter with Items vs Snowball with Items
I think we need to introduce more items (with different stat combinition and more interesting passive/active) for the following reasons:

Our number of champions is increasing, but our number of items is nearly no change over 5 season.

Counter pick is part of the game, but it should not be determinant.

Some so-called oldschool "UP" champion will be very viable if proper new items are introduced.

"Bad Team composition" (immobile + poor cc + squishy) should have a chance to rescue their weakness with items.

With point 2 + point 3 + point 4, improve item varity can indeed improve champion varity in competitve play, which makes LCS more funny.
The current gameplay is more about "counter with champions, snowball with items". I hope one day it is more about "pick whatever you like, win lane/teamfight/game with strategic build".
