How to improve the Ranked system.

Hello everyone. I know most of my readers will disagree with my idea but i hope you will understand where i come from. This is quite long but I do go into detail on the items i feel need to.

To start off: A little about my self ( for you to see where I come from) I am 24 years old, have been playing leave since i was 18 but quit 2 years ago after the new season. I am not the best nor ever will be. I will not be perfect at MOBAs like some people in our community are. As of right now i am unranked. I hope to do good in provisionals as i am 4-3. My MMR is not the greatest but with my match ups i kind of have to deal with what i get so it is hard for me to increase my MMR. I do, but very slowly.

Ok Now to the less boring part for some: The reason for this discussion to help myself, or others, figure out a way for riot to improve their ranked system so that everyone who plays can get somewhat the same experience.

To some, ranked is just an everyday match like normals. To some, ranked is a match they play once in a while to see where their skill is at. To some, ranked is a feature they do not want to touch. To others... Well ranked is just a rage inducing hell hole that never ends.

I have an idea that might be able to help weed out the problems in Ranked. It may be too late for it but I'm sure with some tweaking and some elbow grease it can be done.

CURRENT RANKING SYSTEM (If you know this part, just skip)

Currently the ranking system is based on your MMR. Everyone that hits level 30 and is able to participate in a Ranked match is set at 1200. With that you are put in categories based on your MMR.

  1. Challenger
  2. Master
  3. Diamond
  4. Platinum
  5. Gold
  6. Silver
  7. Bronze Each level has 5 sub levels. Example: Bronze V, Bronze IV, Bronze III, Bronze II, and Bronze I. Aside from Master and Challenger which are only 1 Level. As you play each match and complete, you gain League Points (LP). Each sub level is 100 points when you reach 100 points you go into a promotion series. where you must win at least 2 out of 3 games in order to move to the next level. Once you reach the First level (I) you must win 3 out of 5 games. Once you get high enough to Master and Challenger you will have to earn 200 LP in order to advance. With this Ranking system everyone can get level 30 and just play ranked. You go in do completely terrible and ruin someones Promotional Series causeing them to either restart their climb or restart their league. This is very frustrating to nearly anyone. It is to me as I have had to redo a few times climbing from silver V to IV. The point is there is no system to help prevent things like this from happening.

MY IDEA My Idea on ranked is simple.

When you reach level 30 and are able to unlock ranked. You don't. It stays locked. You will have to meet each of the 3 requirements.

  1. Play a role 10 time and a position 20 times
  2. Play 3 or 5 champs
  3. Earn Mastery 2 on that champ

*** REQUIREMENT 1 (One) *** In order to unlock ranked, You must play a role at least 10 times. Keeping with the new mastery system you must get A or higher in the role. (Only need one A or higher)

The Current roles:

  • Assassin Mage Marksman Support Tank Fighter *

You must also play each position at least 20 times. Keeping with the new mastery system you must also get A or higher in the position. (Only need one A or higher) The Current positions are:

  • Top Middle Jungle Bottom (ADC) Support *

In league the standard game play and roles for positions and roles is: Top lane = Fighter or tank Middle = Mage, assassin, or fighter Jungle = Tank, assassin, or fighter. *There are however some mages that can jungle. * Bottom = Marksman Bottom = Support or tank

  • With jungle. It boils down to if you learn how each champions kit works and how to effectively sustain in jungle in order to be effective and stay with your team in regards to gold income and power. As with this please try to understand this role is very different from the others and is hard to pinpoint a standard

(As with everything in the world I'm sure there are some people who choose Akali Akali ,for example, as a Bottom role because they can. With that being said this idea, encompasses that our wonderful community plays the game like it was designed to be played :) )

(For your minimum games in each position and role. The 10 games per role will count towards 20 games per position. IE you play the role support 10 times, this will count playing the position support 10 of your 20 games. I hope this clears you up on that)

For Example: (You only play jinx in this) You hit level 30. You want to play ranked to see where your skill in the league community is. YAY! You find that during your grind from 1-30 you feel you do better in the bottom lane apart from the others. Great! You see you must choose a positions and a role and play each a certain amount of times. You decide to play the bottom lane and the Marksman role so you play Jinx Jinx, as she is an easy champion for you to play. You know her kit very well and can hold your ground in a fight and know when to back off.

In order to play ranked you must win 10 games as the role Marksman, Jinx Jinx and also 10 more games as the Bottom position.

This is to ensure yourself and (hopefully) Riot that you are able to understand your champion/role/position of choice enough to play ranked.

*** REQUIREMENT 2 (two) ***

You must play 3 or 5 champions per role and position.

I know this will seem a little out of hand but bear with me.

The reason for this requirement is because in Ranked, you go through what is called Draft Picking. Where each person picks a champion to ban because they feel it would make the game unfair if the opposite team chose them. The reason to play 3 or 5 is so if your champion you like to play in that position or role is chosen for ban. you obviously cant play that champion. This will ensure you will have or know at least 1 (one) champion.

*** REQUIREMENT 3 (Three) ***

Mastery levels. This is being applied because as of right now, July 13th 2017 12:40 am MST, Mastery levels are implemented in game to show off that you "know" this champion.

Mastery is a new system in league that goes from Mastery 0 - 5 (and then 6 - 7) on a champion. Meaning you have played a champion enough and earned a lot of points playing that champion.

In order to unlock mastery level 6-7 you must: Mastery 6: Earn an S-, S, S+ for a token and exchange 2 tokens for mastery 6 Mastery 7: Earn S or S+ for a token and exchange 5 tokens for mastery 7

If you see a person with a Purple Mastery Crest on their loading screen Champion picture. It means they are Mastery Level 6 and has earned an S+ on that champion. This would hopefully mean that this person knows how to play this champion.

In order to play ranked you must be Mastery level 2 or higher on that champion. This will pretty much be (depending on your matches) easy to accomplish due to if you play one match quite well you can earn up to 1300 mastery points (out of 2000 for level 1) for that champion. I know this from a personal gain. Each level however does increase in the amount of points you must have to level up.

This is my Idea for ranked because i have witnessed AND experienced matches that well, make me question why some people even play ranked. Each time i question why, the answer usually is, "Because i can"

This new system will hopefully help the true players that want to improve their ranks and skills in league. I do know however this system will not remove the trolls, feeders, and all the other toxic players that seek to just ruin others experience.

I do however want to post an idea of how to make the penal system work better. Right now i do feel that the penal system in place does not truly view the aspects of each game report in a proper manner. Because anyone can report anyone for any reason.

I know this was long so here for you boring people! Thanks to those who actually read my idea. I hope there are some comments that help improve this idea.

TL;DR MY IDEA My Idea on ranked is simple.

When you reach level 30 and are able to unlock ranked. You don't. It stays locked. You will have to meet each of the 3 requirements.

  1. Play a role 10 time and a position 20 times

I fail to see what this problem solves. It forces newer players to play at the least, an extra 100 games (rip smurfs). You're looking at as if experience = skill when this is a false equivalency. A bronze V player with 1000 games is just as bad as one with 100, trust me I've seen it. Putting these sadistic requirements on ranked isn't going to help anybody, If anything the current systems helps you climb. Don't believe me? It's simple statistics ...

Assuming you yourself are not a fresh level 30 going into ranked, you have 4 teammates who are possibly fresh level 30s (3 if you duo) and 5 enemies who are possibly fresh level 30s. Although this is assuming being a new ranked player is a bad thing.

This does help the new fresh levels 30's and if this system were to be set in place at the new season start it will help old 30's. Being new level 30 obviously means you do not have as much experience as someone playing for many years.

The problem it solves is the unbalanced of skill / experience each team has.

I could go into a ranked match right now and someone can choose jungle as udyr. As we play the game we notice he is not ganking much and he is not participating in fights as often as he should. He then tells us "Sorry first time Udyr, trying to learn jungle". This is the problem my idea would hopefully solve.

As for smurfs. I am 100% all for people have smurfs. It allows some players a break from their normal MMR with a fresh new start at it. There are some Smurfs that have better MMR than their mains. In reality, if you were in a silver 3 MMR game and having a smurf that is lets say played by a diamond on your enemy team is a disadvantage. Same goes for if they were on your team. It makes ranked harder because now you have to either let that person carry you ( Free ELO ) or you have to somehow get all 5 of the team to collaborate (if not premade) to shut the person down. Which is hard due to the fact of no voice chat system (Yet, i know curse had the league overlay and to my knowledge, i do not know if it still exists)
