MMR and Matchmaking... are they even trying?

Xyotz··9 votes·927 views

I wonder if they will ever fix the match making system for this game. This game's programming on mmr and whatever whatever is like someone who profiles people and judges them accordingly.... which... I am not saying is a bad thing... but what the fuck riot, if you're gonna do that, at least LOOK at our past gameplays and TRY to see that some people who really love this game want to improve and climb the ladder.

The profiling and judgement that happens is nice and all until you realize that no matter what you do, some "unfortunate" thing always happens and from there you cannot climb. AFk's, throwing, arrogance by the people, trolls, intentional feeders, people who do not understand the game, casual players, people who want to climb, people seeking improvements all just get tossed into one. Suddenly, I'M not good enough to carry my own team because they have no urge to want to win. I am just really flustered... someone tell me what I should do.

Riot's system has 2 big flaws in my eyes:

  1. It considers pre-mades to be "better" than they would be alone, even though they could be a mid laner and support and never interact. There's no reason in my gold 3 games I should have two silver 5 players in the bot lane, getting stomped by the gold 4-2 players that know matchups and rotations better.

  2. It doesn't forgive your loss when you have an afk, int feeder, or clear troll. And in promos/series you can't dodge or you suffer a loss because reasons.

So what could we do to avoid this? Because other people do it right? So I MUST be doing something wrong...?

I just wrote a post about this roughly an hour ago. Hell.. I have said it many times. Their mming just dumb.

Worst part is I almost got motivated to try and "climb" a little in flex queue just for rewards but... holy fucking shit.... nope. I did finally hit gold in solo/duo so I could look to try and improve at the game and climb. But that takes effort and I am all out of fucks to give. Maybe if I didn't have to spend my season climbing through bronze and silver to get back to my actual skill level I would have energy and care to still want to play the game. I can play like 1 ranked solo/duo game a week and maybe have some fun but no way I can spam it. Then I figure "well I am current B2 in flex maybe I can have some easy games to climb and get into a groov to jump into solo/duo". NOPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!. I am about to get demoted to B3 LMFAO because games skill ranges are so fucking random you can't even play the game normally. Playing normally and assuming a laner in a favorable matchup will be ok doesn't work because they could be a brain dead b5 player playing vs some random mid gold player and about to get shit on. Its just.... too much. I hate having to take into account my teammates ranks when playing A RANKED GAME MODE. Hell... it doesn't really even seem to matter since everyone seems to troll in that mode anyways (myself included).

Honestly ever sunce Flex Que was introduced matchmaking has been extremely messed up. It should be hard resets every season for everyone...

Riot isn't the only one with the flaw.

Step 1: People asked for premades 5 v 5.

Step 2: Then people didn't want it. It went to 3/5 vs 3/5.

Step 3: Now people want to not be with randoms. This means going back to 5 v 5 premades.

Step 4: The cycle continues.

The fact I consistently manage to get any account to at least platinium in less than 100 games invalidates your statement.

In fact I would bet you anything that I can do the same with your account, and suddenly, you'd be like "omg you dont have afks in your games", or "omg your teammates are always good". (or at least, not so bad). This would not be true, but your cognitive bias is so high it doesnt matter.

Phyuq Yiu2 votes

I'm with op, my cognitive bias is raging. How do I develop plat+ skills when matchmaking wont let me play with capable players. It may be a punishment system, you get reported, they give you hundreds of unfair matches.

Maybe if you get honored you get to play vs the punishees.

Atm you have to play op champ at an very high level I think. Gone are the days of climbing with Soraka or Janna. Pick op champ and excecute diamond level mechanics, carry a few games and matchmaking will expedite your climb by giving you good teams. Suddenly every game is a stomp, your jgs have 200iq. Your laners are onetricks and they ward. Your adcs stop facechecking.... elo heaven!

Thats kinda how S5 ended and S7 started but I quit for a few months, came back and fall 7 divisions. Can't climb for shit. Rito wants me to play aggressive playmaker, I can but then my adc dont use trinket or back off when ward dies. He died and all pressure shifts to the enemy.

Enemy adc always grabs the lantern? What a fucking dream.

"you said it yourself, "play op champ, play it well and climb" whats the problem then?"

Fiora and Yasuo are not my playstyle, I support carries. I believe if I can do it better than a bronze 2 I should be able to leverage even the tiniest percent of a winrate and slowly climb over a massive grind. That style has been deleted. There are now some bad motherfucker in bronze2, you shoulda seen this bronze 3 Draven. Hardstuck mid bronze but damn can he play.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

No they dont. A lot of my friends though they were "punished" by the system or stuff. I just had to sit in front of their computer and play a few games to show them the problem was ... them.

Atm you have to play op champ at an very high level I think.

I'm playing Veigar only when I need to carry a lower elo game. Not the typical "op meta champ" uh ?

carry a few games and matchmaking will expedite your climb by giving you good teams.

Not really.

Rito wants me to play aggressive playmaker

Like Veigar ?

Actually Veigar fits very well into the current meta. High mobility, high damage champs (at least in low elo) are the highest pick rates in ranked. Veigar's gate and nuke style counters a lot of this. He also peels and zones very well for his team if needed. I've had quite a bit of success with him.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

Actually Veigar has no mobility, Idk what you are talking about. It's like the most immobile mage either. He has no reliable CC since his cage can be dodged, blinked.

Everything he has is space control, he can freeze at inib tower forever as long as baron isnt there, and he scales very well into late game as long as there are not too much tanks.

And he has some range to be a bit safe with W and Q (not with R though).

FreeVolibear3 votes

Apparently I wasn't clear about how he fits in the meta. He fits as a counter to the current meta picks. Space control is very good versus mobility. I'm not disagreeing with you on how he fits in. I am disagreeing with saying that he is not a typical op meta champ. Maybe not typical, but he DOES work well in the current meta as a good counter to meta picks in low elo.

Xyotz1 votes

You mean stack your q, wait til late game. Press e whether sucessful or not. Then press your q w combo or get a free insta kill with r.... I dunno how you can say he's not a op meta champ...

Starcraft243ver1 votes

Because any strategy that involve "wait til late game" is fucked up, there are a lots of teamcomps that straight up WALK on nearly every other team composition if you "wait til late game". Even in diamond we starts a lot of games knowing that "we have late game, play safe guys", and we end up being raped before 15minuts. Or even get raped in late because the opponent team took nearly all the objectives in the map since we just had a late game and no early game.

By the way veigar fall a bit off in late since the tanks are full build and can survive 2 or 3 rows of spells. Whereas in mid game they mostly bough armor and are still free kills if you are a bit fed.

So much for late game, I gave you the timers my games rarely go past 30m :

The problem is different.

If you are just slightly better than average you won't climb this season. You need to play way better than the rest (and do that consistently) which is the problem.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

I dont see how this is a problem, are you seriously crying because you might be silver 1 and you are only silver 3 ?

Lauchmelder6 votes

So complaining about a flawed system is crying now.

Alright, bye.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

The system isnt flawed. Your appreciation of your own level is.

Lauchmelder3 votes

Yea, how about you stick to your cloud and I stick to my own league. Unlike you I know how low elo works.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

Looks like you dont, you might see daily how the low elo works but you dont understand how it actually works, else you would find it's an easy ride to climb up.

Lauchmelder1 votes

Here's the deal: You shut up about things you have no idea about and I don't talk about high elo.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

I can talk about low elo, because I was bronze 5 when I started. I climbed every single tier until D3 last season.

So I know low ELO.

I have multiples accounts as well, and I had to climb them gold for the rewards, and these accounts started around B2. So I know lower elo quite well actually.

So i'm totaly fine talking about what we both know : low elo :).

Succubús GF1 votes

Just for reference did you duoq or was it strict soloq?

Starcraft243ver1 votes

Strict soloq. I have a terrible winrate when I duoQ.

Succubús GF1 votes

Ah I know the feeling, I was stuck in s3 while duoq'd but soloqd myself to s1 in a few days

Xyotz1 votes

Naw naw naw dude! See I like you! You're "appreciation of your own level" is like copy and pasted what riot says when you ask them about their ranking! and you know what? I agree with you. Again, what I wanna know is how to put the try hards together and those who don't really care as much together ya know? Because everyone's not a God like you! :)

Starcraft243ver1 votes

I'm not even a good player, there are maybe 50 good players in this game, the others still makes a lot of mistakes.

And you can't put the tryhard together, because it's not a fixed mindset. Most people are never full tryhard (ok there are a few), and most people are never full IDGAF (ok there are a few as well).

Most people tryhard, but then some day there lack motivation, when I first reached plat, 2 years ago, I climbed to plat 3, then I dont know why, I stopped carring about lps I changed my whole champion pool and went back to gold 5, then proceeded to climb again with my new champion pool.

You can't "guess" that a player doesnt care anymore. And it doesnt really matter. If you consistently tryhard you'll reach your "max elo when tryharding", maybe you'll be matched with people who are not tryharding but who have a "max elo when not tryharding" that is the same as yours when you are tryharding.

The problem is only for people tryharding half of their games. They'll end up in an in between elo between their "max elo when not tryharding" and "max elo when tryharding" and they'll basically win nearly every game where they tryhard and lose nearly every game when dont care.

Making it frustrating for both themself and their team.

Xyotz1 votes

Aight cool. Wanna teach me how? How can I win lane, and still not be raped in the late game and give me another or simply elaborate on te "I'm so bad" part... I just wanna get better ya know?

If you could teach me rather than just state another plausible problem which I have thought about as well that would nice :)

FreeVolibear4 votes

Okay. You are a platinum player who can get a bronze account to platinum. Congratulations. Does he then HAVE to be a platinum caliber player to get to silver? Or maybe gold? My problem with your response (which is common of plat + players) is that we who complain about the inability to climb out of bronze KNOW we are not platinum caliber players. But why should we have to be to get to silver at least?

Starcraft243ver1 votes

Nope, I'm a plat 1 player and I manage to consistently get accounts plat 5 (I stop trying after that).

So it's not very far from my best level you see ?

Your ranking after 100 games is accurate minus or plus 2 divisons. Which is quite okay for a ranking system with 27 divisions.

FreeVolibear3 votes

What part of my question does this answer? You are a plat player getting consistently out of bronze. How does this relate to someone trying to at least get to silver? Also, your logic of +/- 2 divisions... please post data supporting this. If not, I will just assume you pulled it out of your ass to support your logic. That's circular logic pal.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

This part answered it :

Nope, I'm a plat 1 player and I manage to consistently get accounts plat 5

I'm not :

You are a plat player getting consistently out of bronze.

I reach consistently my whole tier.

How does this relate to someone trying to at least get to silver?

I was just showing that consistency is possible.

Xyotz1 votes

Which I agree consistency is possible! So how do we get positive consistency then? To say we aren't trying or getting better withour decision making is kind of being skewed by the lack of our other teammates understanding the game, throwing, or even afking the game. So how do you, as a consistant plat player beat the norm or this issue many of us are having?

The only problem I have with that is... because of this game's placement system one person could start at or + or - 2 divisions of their actual rank while someone else could drop a fuck ton and still not be there after 100 games. If it was true that you never were actually within your skill level (on previous ranked accounts) then this would make more sense, but Riot can't even do that correct.

GayFluffyUnicorn5 votes

The problem is, and anyone who tried it will see the same result, that fresh accounts who start lets say gold 5 with plat 5/4/3 mmr for example get significantly better teammates to get you to where you "belong". Whereas when you ARE in your MMR range and want to climb you consistently get worse teammates to "prove" you belong higher.

Xyotz1 votes

Oh no! I completely agree that I suck and I am super happy someone like you can get ANY account into plat in less than 100 games! But for those who were genetically born not as intelligent as you, how would you do it?

I mean I don't afk... and I'm not saying I'm suuuupper god like, I just wanna know how to get better ya know? So tell me, rather than just exclaiming that you're plat, about how i can get these "omg you dont have any afks in my game" level or to the "omg your teammates are always good" stage.

http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/CecilSunkure/How_To_Improve_Efficiently_b.pdf

Read page 1 to 7 it's full of nice general concepts to improve at every game, or hobby.

Basically improving at anything can be solved with the PDCA (management methods) : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDCA

You basically set a goal, you find actions to get closer to your goal, you do these actions, you check if you are now closer to your goal, you adjust your actions, keep what's good, throw what's bad.

It works for every project in your life.
