Why do people have smurf accounts

It doesnt make sense to me.

I am a new low level player. It often happens that i play 5v5 pvp and people brag 'im actually level 30 on my other account ' while the other team is level 21 or so( and they are true level 21 no smurfs)

Whats the fun about it ? Sometimes you get a team full of smurfs and theres no way to win as a beginner player.

Because high elo sucks.

For leveling up players it sucks.

But for me personally, I have an alternate (I am not good enough to "smurf," and many people who "smurf" may not be smurfs). I want to practice other champions, but my main account is high Silver and I will lose if I go top or something, because I normally only play support. So if I want to learn bot lane, then I use another account that is at the right level of opponent so I can practice and my team won't hate me.

I usually make a smurf to play with friends since matchmaking thinks 2 diamonds, 2 plats, and a gold is equal to me, a gold, 2 silvers, and a bronze. Then my OCD tells me I have to level it up so I do, then I play ranked on it casually until it gets to high plat/low diamond mmr and almost everyone is an asshole. After that I stop playing until some friends are online and the cycle starts over.

I certainly don't brag or talk down to people when I am on a smurf though, unless of course its some garbage people smurfing on the other team shit talking. At which point the mastery emote spam comes out.

if u are just starting ranked maybe u see too many smurfs

I've never seen the appeal for it.

The only exceptions I can think of would be:

  • Master/Challenger players (who want shorter queue-times)
  • Streamers or Content Creators (who may want to do Unranked-to-Diamond series or play champions selected by their viewers).

Beyond some of the reasons here, there is also the steamer smurfs. They smurf because people want to watch someone win hard - it gets them viewers. Someone stuck in silver isn't going to watch someone playing in silver (they'd just play themselves) or someone playing in diamond+ (their allies and enemies will never play like that) - they want to see someone hard carrying in silver/gold/plat and think they'll be able to replicate it in their games if they watch it enough.

Now to be fair, i don't think these people would talk shit in normal games while leveling up. Those guys are probably bronze/silver that can't handle losing and this instead choose to stomp on new players.

so that this challengers players can go duo with their plat 2 buddies indirectly boosting them due to incorrect mmr

Unfortunately for some people it's fun to just beat down on people who are just that much weaker than them, for some it's about enjoying leveling the account (possibly to sell if off later cause that's a thing), but also it's easier to climb on a new account from what i know.
