Is ranked demotion based on purely loses or your MMR?

I haven't been demoted, but I was just looking at the Ranked portion of the FAQ and got curious. It said for demotion from a TIER that you had to fall below the MMR for the previous tier (like if you are Platinum, you'd have to fall below Gold 5 MMR to be demoted to gold). Is it the same for Divisions? Like if you are Silver 2 would you have to fall below (silver 3?) MMR at 0 LP? Or is it just when you hit 0 LP, you are demoted after 3 loses no matter how high your MMR is? Thanks everyone.

Its based on MMR...you can lose games at 0 LP and not get demoted if your MMR is high enough. This happened to me 2 times this season.

Your actual rank is based on your LP loss and gain. Your Division (Ryze's Fists, Urgot's Tricksters, Soraka's Avengers, etc) is determined by your MMR.

Okay either none of you understand how this works, or I worded this very poorly. Probably both lol. I'm sorry, I'm not exactly sure how else to word it. The division is the numerical number beside your Tier. >Gold 4 = Gold 'Tier', 4th 'Division'<

You are demoted in Tiers based on hidden MMR only, not necessarily from only losing games. (I get those go hand in hand, but you will not be demoted on a set number of loses. Rather, you get demoted due to your hidden MMR dropping below Silver 5 MMR).

I was just asking if you were demoted a division (the one that is a number) based on only losing a set amount of games, or if you were demoted based on your hidden MMR like it is in Tiers. People are generally demoted after losing 3 games at 0 LP in a division. I am trying to find out if that is an officially set number or just a coincidence
