But the ability literally says "treated as a basic attack". It does just about everything else a basic attack can do, applying on hits, crits, Panth blocks (though not Jax dodges or blinds for some reason) and, weirdly enough, attack speed makes you do more of them. It is, for most all intents and purposes, an auto attack.
