Hello everyone! I am a adc main in silver 5 atm and im looking to start playing more top than adc! I've been trying to find some champs to play that i like, but i feel that they are not as viable as i thought to push rating with :/ Either that or i just suck with them xD But they are Irelia Hecarim Olaf Zac Maybe These ones i have a blast playing its just that it seems i can never really win lane

Thanks in advance!

Hecarim and Zac are generally better in the jungle than they are in top lane. They can still work, but it is a bit more difficult than some alternatives.

I'd recommend Irelia and Maokai. They've both been consistent top laners for years at this point, occasionally being overshadowed but never being truly weak, and can adequately handle most matchups when players properly.

I've always wanted to learn maokai, i have him lvl 4 but still cant quiet grasp concept of his kit, is there any guide or someone that plays him a lot that you can forward me to to get a few tips?

He sees less play at the moment than he previously did, but he is still used a decent amount. If you want a basic setup, I would recommend the following to start with:

  • Masteries: 12/0/18 with Grasp of the Undying
  • Runes: AP Quints, Attack Speed Marks, Armor Seals, MR Glyphs
  • Skill Order: QWQEQR, R>Q>W>E
  • Basic Build: item 3111 item 3068 item 3025 item 3065 item 3742 item 3075

Maokai generally wants to focus on farming early-game so that he can afford his defensive items. However, Maokai's powerful basic abilities and high base stats let him trade with and potentially bully many opponents during the laning phase.

When trading with Maokai, you have to keep your mana usage in mind until you have some form of mana sustain (i.e. Doran's Ring or Corrupting Potion) or raw mana (i.e. Glacial Shroud).

Maokai's Q is useful for farming and harassing your opponent from a distance. When used close to a target, it has the added benefit of knocking them away from you which is useful to both disengage a fight and to cancel enemy basic attacks.

Maokai's W is useful for for rooting the target and for making Maokai untargetable. Using this ability, Maokai can avoid many abilities (since you can't hit an untargetable unit) and drop minion/tower aggro. This ability can turn trades severely in Maokai's favour by reducing the damage minions deal to him (while his opponent is still being hit) and by letting him avoid key abilities from his opponent.

Later in the game, Maokai transitions into a body-guard for his team. Between his powerful CC, the vision provided by his saplings and the damage reduction provided by his ultimate, he is fantastic at protecting his allies and surviving anything thrown at him

Make sure to take advantage of his passive during teamfights. His passive will provide a massive amount of health back during fights so long as you are constantly autoattacking something, which greatly improves your survivability.

If you are looking for guides, I would recommend Champion.gg for basic build information (items, runes, masteries, etc).

For players using him, I'd probably look for pro players on Youtube. I recall Dyrus played him in a few games semi-recently and I'm sure many others have as well.

as maokai you want to max Q W E in that order. he benefits from items like item 3001 item 3742 item 3110 item 3025 item 3151 item 3143 item 3027 item 3065 item 3068

i typically play him with attack speed reds, hp per lvl yellows, flat armor quints and mr per lvl blues/cdr blues 12-0-18 set up

another set up would be flat magic pen reds, armor per lvl seals, ap quints, mr per lvl blues.

a rune page im testing on him is flat magic pen reds. hp per lvl seals, armor quints, a mix of cdr blues and mana regen blues. giving 5%cdr lvl 1 and 1 mana per 5 sec on regen.

he isnt as strong as he was last season but still viable and can be a cc machine and a tank supreme.

you Q is your farm and damage ability. try to get multiple cs when you use the ability to get the max regen from a item 1056 start.

he has really high base ad damage so autos are strong and running attack speed makes it easier to last hit and to proc your passive when it is up.

his passive grants him % of his maximum hp return on his next auto, it is proc by abilities being casted , yours or enemy.

you can go full tank and never die or you can build a bit ap bruiser and you can do a good amount of damage do to the high base damage of abilities. ideally in lane you are some what weaker with out core items and once you get about lvl 9 you become a monster. he is a great scaling late game champ who is safe early as well.

ap bruiser build would be item 3027 item 3025 item 3068 item 3065 item 3151 item 3111

full tank build would be item 3027 item 3068 item 3065 item 3742 item 3110 item 3111

if vs alot of ap i and i dont need as much armor i go item 3027 item 3025 item 3001 item 3065 item 3151 item 3111

you ult when active takes damage reducing the damage you take and stores it upon reactivating it or at the end of it it well use all the damage it took and stored and reflect it back on any one in that AOE radius. it can be great to use to win fights 1 vs 1 or tank for team in team fights and securing objectives. you can use it defense when you are being ganked and trying to retreat and survive by activating it and use it to make you tanker as you try to retreat from the 2vs1. and if you are ahead you can 1 vs 2 with the kit.

if you get behind just farm up and get tank items and due from natural tankyness and his kit high base damage and cc you are always a threat through out the game and useful.

this is a game where i went ap bruiser tank and had 75k damage dealt to champs and tanked 60 k in damage and had a kda of 18-8-19 shortly after this they nerfed his Q cd and nerfed his passive.

he is my most played champ with the highest mastery points and might be my favorite as well

I think Maokai is a great champ to start top lane. He scales into late game and is great at peeling for your carries.

Not sure why they are recommending attack speed. I would go with MP marks, armor seals, MR glyphs, AP quints or 1 AP & 2 CDR.

So i did start using MP marks, but i noticed that i don't win a lot of trades early because i couldn't get my attacks off as fast as the other bruisers and or tanks, and along with that u don't get the passive off with them...

Michael7021 votes

You should be alternating your basic attacks and abilities. This skill is really important for the Iceborn Gauntlet passive. So attack speed shouldn't be an issue. I can't stress how important MP is for Maokai. All of his abilities are magic damage along with the Sunfire Cape I hope you're building.

Maokai is strongest versus physical damage champs because you can rush Sunfire Cape which is defensive and offensive. Don't try to trade early. Focus on farming and poking. Only trade if you have the advantage.

And don't try to dive their carries in team fights. Peel for yours. You will win more games that way.

Are you sure you wouldn't rather play in the jungle with those champs?

My only problem with jungle is i dont know the right times to gank :/
