How's Twisted Fate in SoloQ?

I've played him in a couple of team builder games with my friends, and I find him really fun to play, but how is he in ranked solo?

People hate him generally because people can't manage to land a good ult. Laning wise, he gets outmatched by most FOTM mid laners. (Leblanc, Zed, Talon, Katarina)

replace talon with ahri. his laning is pretty shitty.

Depends on your ranking/own experience (I'm talking about Flavor of The Month mid laners, not counters). I did not see an ahri in my past 3 weeks.

And TF lanning is not that shitty, he can still farm really well, do some harass, etc. He is closer to being an "Upgraded" Ziggs (In the sense that he has a hard stun and he can set up better ganks for the same reason)

Please note that I still enjoy Ziggs more than TF just because he can farm from a greater range. (not much though)

Would it be worth picking him over the raw damage/utility mages for his map pressure, assuming I get good ults?

He is worth picking. But if you end up against a lane bullies (and assassins) you will have a bad time. Like a really bad time, you'll just get outclassed by the assassins.

Edit : Imo TF is somewhere between assassin's and high damage farmers (Ziggs, Lux and inc). When you get your 6 you can kill someone in an other lane, BUT you are far from being an assassin. (Because the assassin will still do this job, but in a teamfight.)
