Top is pretty much super unfun to play unless you love the champions that are played top.
The biggest problem for me is that top is expected to fill too many needs of a team. Need a tank, better be in top lane. Need CC? Top lane again. Need an extra carry? Still top lane. You end up needing to be some kind of bruiser with a bunch of CC and then you end up with
or
as your lane opponent and simply feed because you didn't take one of the champions that does well into them.
You need to blow a 5 minute cooldown to have impact on bot lane, typically winning bot lane means winning the game, so your jungler spends all of his time there because that's the smart choice with Mid, Dragon, and Bot all being in the same zone.
If you die top, you pretty much lose lane unless your lane opponent is an idiot and throws it back to you, or your jungler takes pity and happens to be on the top side of his jungle and mostly healthy enough to consider taking the long and arduous walk all the way to your lane for a free kill as you was forced into bringing absurd amounts of CC to fulfill your team's needs, but really he'd rather leave you be and take herald solo instead.
Long story short, I quit playing top lane to play mid and support because I can impact the game before the end of laning phase without needing a 5 minute cooldown or blowing all of my lane pressure.
