Just hit level 30, why am I playing with and against plats?

Friend and I both just hit level 30 a week or two ago, and haven't had too much trouble with bad matchups when it comes to skill. However, we just played a match with 2 silvers and a plat on our team. I have a vague knowledge of MR, but I know enough that the enemy team is supposed to add up to roughly the same MR as your own.

so like. why us? why aren't we facing only bronze and silver and 30 level of skill people?

Also, I am aware that this topic has probably been brought up a million and 2 times already. please help educate me on this.

He probably queued with a friend, the game takes their average MMR for matchmaking

You probably met premades, in other cases, you shouldn't meet people with rank higher than gold 5-3. If someone from, let's say, plat, queues up with silver, then such situations happen. A lot of times in a team where is a plat player, other non-premade players might have lower rank than you, eg. in the same team with plat and silver premades, you may see players from bronze or unranked players. I think that's how it works. Btw, few days ago, I had diamond player in enemy team. Our team was full premade, so I guess the system gave us premade diamond and silver to play against.

it is mmr, and for ranked you have a set mmr if you havent played it before

Are you talking normals or ranked? In normals, it doesn't matter.

In ranked, you will tend to be matched against people at most one bracket above or below you... I am never matched with golds or silvers, only plats, other diamonds and some above.

The game we played was just a classic 5v5 on summoners'. does mmr not work the same way between ranked and classic? Also, if my mmr is set for the first time I do ranked, will that mean that the first game will put me against high level players?
