Let's get Ranked Based on Individual Grade in Game

Quietpartner··4 votes·1,397 views

I have an idea for making the ranking system in League of Legends better and more fair. Why aren't we ranked (ex. Bronze, Silver, Gold, etc.) instead based on our individual grade, which shows up in the match summary at the end of the game? Everyone gets a grade for how they played their champ from S to D. S being the best, D being the worst. For example, suppose my teammate gets an A or higher, he should get LP regardless of whether he loses or wins the game. The higher the grade the more LP he should get. On the other hand if I manage to get a C or lower I should lose LP. Those that get a B gain none and lose none. Wouldn't that be more fair?

It seems to me it would be more fair than getting S's 80% of the time only to lose 80% of the games we play because our teammates made poor choices. Losing games in ranked only results in the loss of LP regardless of how well one plays. Come on Riot, lets not punish more skilled players, because they are matched with less skilled teammates. I think it would make games more competitive and fun for everyone. What do you think?

Edit: Riot could also reward a significant amount of bonus LP to teams that win, that way they still encourage team play. I'm just proposing a way to make climbing more fair and competitive.

So when I play elise support and last-hit ks all your kills I get an S and you get an A-. Yeah that seems like a solid plan. Unless there was an actual analyst looking at every match, it's kinda hard for them to write a program that accurately does what you would want it to do. It would be nice, but it's not really feasible with modern tech yet I think.

Quietpartner2 votes

Hello, it has already been written. It's already part of the game. Everyone gets a score at the end of the match. It's in the match summary at the end of the game. By the way if you last hit every kill and we both get above a B we both GAIN LP, not lose it. Eventually everyone that has any sort of skill will progress out of elo hell and be match with players who have consistantly scored similarily to them. What's wrong with that? Do you like the way it currently is? Getting S's and losing LP, cause your team lost the match?

Actually if you are playing elise sup, you probably won't get an S if you take all the kills. Support roles are rewarded by assists. Are you familiar with the current grading system?

Current stats don't actually measure contribution to winning accurately in all scenarios. And in nigh on every game people get at least a b - which would mean everyone gains lp which would in fact mean everyone advances out of bronze and then silver and then... wow, everyone is challenger with Dyrus and Redmercy, and Brofresco, and NB3, and Voyboy, and that guy you smashed in bronze 5. So you see the problem now? Good. I am not thrilled with current system, but I know your proposed changes can't happen with current tech unless actual humans went back and watched each game - which they don't have money to do unless you want to pay a few hundred thousand people's salaries to watch everyone's league games and rate your contribution. Why? For example, I've had games where a player picks a carry support, loses lane, then goes and solo farms side waves.... maybe even picking up a few 1v1 kills as well as the occasional teamfight ks. When they need to be grouped with team defending base, they are solo pushing and farming without gaining anything MEANINGFUL (towers, inhibs, objectives) while we lose a crucial fight and the base. Repeat that about 10 times and we lose game. Our 'AMAZING' support gets an S due to great stats despite fact that they costed us the game. So... yeah stats we have now can lie. Rating system can lie. Take a flip side. I can start 5/0/0 in lane, then sacrifice my perfect game to get losing mid and bot lane back in the game. I can force enemy to blow all their cc and burst on JUST ME - to give my team winning fights all game long. My final stats look mediocre and I get a B+ or A- despite fact I solo carried the game by snowballing my losing teammates into having leads and giving them the space to have free reign to deal damage. My feeding bot ends up with positive kda and an S+ while my losing mid ends up with A+ or S- and even kda at end of game. Without me throwing my life and my S+ game away, we would lose the game; do I not deserve better score than them and more lp? But I don't get it because even though I was the best teammate and carried the game, the stats say I did worse than them after my amazing start. So yeah... stats can lie. Am I familiar with the current grading system?...[slayer-pantheon-popcorn]

You bring up up some good points. The grading system can't possibly take every scenario into account. Although from my experience those examples you used are rare and don't happen every game. Can they improve the grading system? Sure they can.

About your comment saying everyone would rank up with this system and eventually all find themselves in Challenger. I don't think this would be a problem, because as soon as everything settled, games would become more competitive. Everyone on your team would be more similar in skill and only the excellent players would advance. True, Bronze would be a lot smaller (that would be a good thing, because right now it's GIGANTIC), but hey it's the lowest tier, it's where all the beginners should be, not veterans that have been playing for years on end. I think it would spread people out and make the matchmaking more accurate.

If this idea for being graded for ranked isn't your idea of what would make it more fair, what would you purpose? I'd like to know your thoughts.

  1. Regularly have Riot employees spectate or participate in solo q games at all ranks. Not just in-house games; games people like you and me play in. Some people are held back for a long time every year by teammates. Some people have to deal with unreasonable levels of trolls/int/toxic players as compared to the majority of people in their rank. Figuring out a. if this is true and b. who this is true for allows Riot to take action and fix things for these players. Ex: someone like me who was g5 last season should not get a 2 week 90% losing streak upon climbing to s3 from a crummy b3 placement. Upon examining chat, stats, and most importantly GAMEPLAY FOOTAGE from such games, Riot could realize I was losing due 75% or more of my losses due to teammates who individually in laning phase made the game completely unwinnable. People who lacked the very basics of what it would take to climb to such a rank as their current one. And people who were toxic for someone saying any little thing - no matter how nicely I or someone else said it. Upon seeing this due to spectating and/or playing secretly (no one knows they are a Riot employee during the match so behavior is not adjusted) in the match, they could adjust accordingly for each player in the match. Sure they can't see a match from everyone each week, but I think they have to have enough people that once a month they could make it into a match from just about everybody who plays ranked - considering you hit 9 people at a time by playing one match or 10 at a time if spectating.

  2. Review chat logs - for ALL players in a game where someone is reported; especially if one or more players is getting a punishment for poor chat behavior. Sometimes the guy/girl getting a chat restriction/ban deserves it but was hardly the worst person in chat and was furthermore provoked repeatedly.

  3. Take action. Look I know most people in low elo have no clue on macro. They have no clue of "having a bad game" vs "inting" or being "boosted". But if an individual takes the time to send evidence in, consider actually looking at it. For example, I have done analysis of my own games and due to my experience of playing this game, watching high ranked players, and listening to analysis of pro games, I have a much higher level of understanding of macro and post-laning play than many players twice my elo. I have a full written analysis of at least one match of mine as well as analysis of certain plays and builds for parts of other games. If anyone from Riot took 10 min to look at those, they would see I understand things quite well. It's my mechanics and tunnel vision in laning phase which hold me back - as well as regularly enough (to prevent the win-streaks required to climb divisions) being paired with unreasonably poor players that prevents me from climbing more than I have. So if I submit evidence of other players being unreasonably toxic or intentionally throwing away games and ask that it be reviewed, a look should be taken. Should this hold true for everyone who tries this? No because not everyone understands the game well enough to be correct when they submit evidence or a complaint. Riot can't take the time for 20million cases. It should however be able to take the time for someone of any elo/rank IF they have proven to have a solid understanding of the game. And a reply to said player should be made promptly.

Look, I would love if they had the manpower to do what you suggest - I've said so myself for a long time. I just know they don't have those kind of resources being a free-to-play game despite how big they are. Until more of that stuff can be accurately automated and handled by computer ai, it just isn't going to happen. I mean perhaps they could get a large enough group of moderators who could do reviews of people of much higher/lower elo than they are that there is no chance for bias - having moderators sit out of reviews if their friends are involved in such a case - perhaps even different regions. These moderators would be volunteers who review the matches free-of-charge. They would reveiw cases such as I have discussed above and give Riot more manpower for such cases - after having been certifiably trained by Riot on how to analyze such cases. Because nobody would want to do such things for free on a regular basis Riot would end up having not enough people. So to solve this, Riot could add some perk like some free rp each full year someone serves as a moderator or perhaps a free one day pass to some pro league event excluding playoffs and international events. This is actually probably the most reasonable - provided the players/moderators receive proper training and tools as well as some way to collaborate and share their thoughts on the case in a confidential manner.

So, you want me to play full AD Yi support, and steal all the kills and cs whenever possible? To hell with supporting. I can't afford to let teammates get in the way of my LP.

This basically discourages teamplay, and actively punishes a number of playstyles (selfless tank plays, lane swaps to give a hypercarry farm while you starve in a 1v2 lane, etc).

This idea just has too many flaws and problems to be feasible at all.

Quietpartner2 votes

Um, maybe you should familiarize yourself with the current grading system. Supports are NOT rewarded by KILLS, they are rewarded by ASSISTS.

You bring up a good point though. It may discourage team play, but to address that issue what if we got bonus LP if we win the match. That way a person that wins and individually plays well gets more LP than a person that loses and plays well. Either way they both get out of elo hell and stop getting paired with underskilled teammates.

DarkRitual1 votes

Partially correct. Assists are weighted HEAVIER for supports than other roles, but kills ARE still factored in.

Quietpartner2 votes

Kills are very negligible for sup if at all factor in, I used to main support for 6 months. Also, I've seen others get S's as a sup without any kills but over 20 assists. I'm just looking for ways to make the Rank system more fair. Do you like it as it is?

DarkRitual1 votes

Kills definately factor in. Most of my S/S+'s recently are games I had an okay death/assist score, but more deaths than assists. If My kills are less or equal to my deaths, I usually top out at A+, even with decent warding etc.

I wouldn't say it's perfect. It could definately use improvements, but this idea isn't a direction I would want to see things move in.

Quietpartner2 votes

Fair enough. Thanks for your honesty.

k wìx2 votes

Yes please - I'd love to see your personal grade at least influence the LP won or lost from ranked matches.

If you fed your opponent in a huge way, you are one of the primary reasons for the loss.

Conversely, if you carried your team and died very little, it's obvious you hugely contributed to the victory.

Quietpartner1 votes

I couldn't agree more. Thank you for your post!

Cocho1 votes

I can get good grades while not helping my team win though.

I could also be the deciding factor in every teamfight, but If I kill myself by diving to do it, then my grade will show it.

Grade doesn't equal influence

Quietpartner1 votes

I'm confused. The grade is in direct relation to individual performance in game. By not feeding you help your team win ( if that's what you mean), so you may be mistaken. I'm not sure you understand the grading system.

Aptest1 votes

no.

that is your mistake.

Grades are not sufficiently well correlated to individual performance in game.

EDIT:

here is an example. Lets say you are playing a support, and the ADC is pushing very hard and is out of position. He is met by opposing team's toplane but you interject. However the enemy top lane can kill you both easily. You fight the top laner while your ADC escapes, and then take the opponent into a mad run through the jungle. You die, and the ADC escapes.

You have benefitted your team, but your score is in the negative for this play.

A second advantage. You as Soraka participate in several ganks and take all the kills. Then you help push with the junlger but you also last hit the entire wave.

you've hurt the team's effort to concentrate gold on damage dealers and play makers by putting it on a champion that is neither. you score, however, inflates.

Quietpartner1 votes

Yes, i'm pretty sure I understand the grading system, are we talking about the same game? If I'm mistaken please educate me.

Aptest1 votes

I believe you are mistaken and here is my reasoning:

If the grading system works well, A high grade must be causative of a win. Note: causative, since the grading works on specific in game actions, not correlative.

Every example I can dig up where the actions benefit the team but the grading system punishes the player means the grading system is failing to measure performance.

Every example I can dig up where the actions hurt the team but the grading system rewards the player means the grading system is failing to measure performance.

Every example I can dig up where the actions benefit or hurt the team but the grading system ignores the action means the grading system is failing to measure performance.

If the examples are common enough, than we can say the grading system is not measuring well enough to yield a "this player did good this game" result.

And I believe they are common enough. From the fed mid laner that simply refuses to push objectives, to the ADC who is never in any team fight, to the support who hit no one with his ult but the other team's evasion put them in an untenable situation.

Quietpartner1 votes

Why don't you share with me your version of making ranked play more fair?

Aptest1 votes

simple:

ELO method based ranking for each player, or ranking with a direct 1 for 1 equivalent S.A. Microsoft truskill, and each match should have a very narrow range of player rankings allowed in it.

Reasoning:

The problem you are describing is "I did well but my team mates did badly so we lost". In reality it is not known whether you did actually well or not.

Many of what you consider to be good plays were actually bad plays, or were overall useless plays in the context of the game that came at the expense of better and probably less rewarding plays that were not executed elsewhere.

An example would be a heavily winning botlane, when the other team has a heavily winning top lane. The winning bot lane can continue its winning plays against the enemy bot lane, or give up both tower and dragon to come contest the winning top lane of the other team which is a hard play with risks. It is not clear which choice is better (in soloQ obviously).

I do not know of any current method that manages to capture the causative relation between in game activity and winning. In the absence of such a method, the only metric that correlates well enough to winning is winning.

As a caveat a method that is based around "objective pressure" and tries to count participation in "plays" (distance from objective while objective is taken / not taken, counting of follow up objectives taken after kills) may be good enough, but i have no idea if this can be implemented well enough.

Quietpartner1 votes

Support roles are not rewarded based on kills or necessarily punished for dying. They are rewarded by assists. For example I can get an S with Soraka by dying 8 times, having 1 kill and 28 assists (I may not have the math exact). Also, I'm not so sure it benefits your team if you suicide with your adc.

I'm sure there is some adjusting the needs to happen to make grades more accurate, but they would be alot more fair than putting the fate of your Rank based on good or poor teammates.

Cocho1 votes

If I'm playing Katarina .

I could choose to kill Ahri and Vayne, then die from all the damage I took from doing so.

or

don't, getting some assists and lose.

Taking the 50/50 smite to steal baron? You bet im not taking that free death, whether I can steal it or not.

Leaving this minion wave of 20 minions, to TP to a teamfight? no, that wave is going to help you more than that teamfight, which still has a chance of losing if you do go.

Look at this post. https://www.reddit.com/r/summonerschool/comments/69kp6k/why_can_some_players_never_climb/ http://imgur.com/MqB2Kui good kdas, cant climb. He plays for kda

Quietpartner1 votes

I don't understand what your talking about, but just so you know cs is factored into your grade already..

Cocho1 votes

A teamfight occurs.

I can A. CS this wave, and get a better grade B. Help my team in that teamfight.

Quietpartner1 votes

Those are decisions every good player has to make. I know the one I would not make, suiciding in a team fight I cannot win. Imagine if everyone on your team was that smart? They wouldn't engage in the first place. In the end, I think you will find that getting the better individual grade WILL help your team in the long run. That's been my experience. Even if it doesn't always convert into winning games, which is my reason for starting this post. I would like to see players gaining LP (or increasing their rank) based on individual KDA and CS, not on whether they win or lose games.

Cocho1 votes

The game isnt always that clear. What if the fight could go either way if you came, you don't know. What you do know for sure, is the CS in front of you will help no matter what lol. Its safer for the grade.

You need to take risks to win. I could play janna and have amazing KDAs every game, but i wouldnt be taking risks, so i wont be as helpful as I could be. https://imgur.com/nPc1PqD

Quietpartner1 votes

I think we are getting off point here. This has nothiing to do with the original post. I get your frustration though.

Cocho1 votes

This isnt off point at all.

When I was trying to get Janna level 7, I played very safe, just to not die. I didn't do as much as I could have because of this.

When a mid laner players overly safe, he ends up doing alot less damage. http://imgur.com/MqB2Kui

You can have KDAs like this guy, but lose alot of games, because he's doing the least damage on his team everygame. You often have to put yourself in risky situations to win, not doing so will certainly help your grade, but not your team.

I'm giving you examples of being 'S' grade worthy, but being a terrible player/teammate.

Quietpartner1 votes

I see your point, although I don't see it as an issue. What your saying is its possible to have a great KDA and achieve an S, but still not help your team win. Is that right? If that's true, I would say if everyone on the team played that way, you would win every game (unless of course no one is getting objectives and it just becomes a killing competition). So in this case the person in the example is playing their role really well and deserves to rank up and earn LP, while the team members that took risks and fed, don't deserve to rank up. I understand risks, but it becomes stupidity if risk takers are constantly feeding. Playing safe sometimes is smarter. Tell me if I didn't understand you correctly.

I would assume that grades factor in objectives achieved as well. I could be wrong.

Edit: I guess I've never had your problem. Every game I got an S, I did significant damage and helped my team win most games.

you're right, nothing would happen besides sitting back and losing

You often have to take more risks when you're losing, in the scenario you gave, playing safe and letting the other guy carry is smarter. The guy doing well already took risks, and they paid off.

Taking that lead, and putting it in other lanes becomes another risk if all you care about is the grade. It's a no brainer that you want to extend your lead to other lanes, but why do it if you could just stay top, farm all game, split, and get a good grade, whether that was a good decision or not?

When I'm going for a S, I'd make more defensive buys.

I would assume that grades factor in objectives achieved as well. I could be wrong.

If you go 5/0/0, but have 300 cs at 30 minutes, you'll probably get a S. Doesn't mean you did well though. Just playing for a grade is different than playing to win. You can't argue with that.

Edit: I guess I've never had your problem. Every game I got an S, I did significant damage and helped my team win most games.

No you don't, you lack damage in alot of games. It might not be because you play too safe though, might be that build lmao. It sounds to me you are completely dissatisfied with the current grading system and you don't see any value in it. Is that correct? From what you told me, you've had bad experiences with it. That's probably why we have different perspectives. I'm fine with that.

About the personal attack you made to me regarding my builds. It doesn't really matter if others disagree with it. It works for me, I generally get alot of kills, and put my team in a position to take objectives (afterall if you can't take towers and inhibitors, how do you expect to take the nexus?) It doesn't really matter how much damage you deal. So I'm good with it. If you think you are so good at playing, why don't you recommend some builds to help under ranked individuals like myself, instead of just criticizing and mocking them?

Also, I'd like to know your thoughts on how to make the ranking system more fair?

My Gender Varies1 votes

In ranked, it just comes down to whether you win or not. Nothing else matters. The grades correlate with winning, but there are going to be ways to abuse it, no matter what, unless its literally, did you win or not?

I don't think there is a more consistent way of determining a player's skill than how many games they won over 'x' games. A player could have great KDAs, and lose alot of games.

This player is the embodiment of that. http://imgur.com/MqB2Kui

Do you think he belongs higher? Or is it his team? Over 500 games it was his team? I dont think so. There is something this player does, which is why he doesn't win as much games as he probably should.

He probably gets As or higher every game, but he's stuck because he doesn't win enough.

I guess I've never had your problem. Every game I got an S, I did significant damage and helped my team win most games.

I linked your matches because of this. You often don't do alot of damage. The guy I linked didn't do alot of damage.

do more damage.

Also, http://www.probuilds.net/champions/details/Diana

Quietpartner1 votes

Thanks for your perspective.

Are you Cocho, because you don't have the same name? I guess you didn't read the post before. Damage doesn't win games, objectives do. But your welcome to have your opinion.

Also, yes it is possible to be given bad teams a majority of the time in Bronze. Have you been there before? 500, 1000 games it doesn't matter. That's why they call it elo hell.

If that Diana build is an attempt to help me, then thanks.

Edit: I can see why you put that comment in there about doing a lot of damage, you were just correcting me. I apologize, I misread it. Thanks for the correction. I guess I never looked up how much damage I do. Either way, I still think objectives are more important than the amount of damage one does. I realize they correlate sometimes, but not always. I've seen people just go for kills all game and throw the game for their team, because they didn't get objectives.

My Gender Varies1 votes

Whoops signed onto my smurf lmao xD didnt realize

I started off in bronze 5, and I deserved it lol. I was that yasuo that everyone hated XD lol.

The thing about getting a bad team in general, is that it happens on both sides.

I do believe that a hell could occur over a small amount of games, like during placements, but over a large sample, no.

In low elo, I often find that I just need to be there when a fight occurs, because fights will happen no matter what. Do you see a 3v4 mid lane? they're gonna fight it lol.

I played old Katarina , Annie, Amumu until like gold, and just put a bunch of emphasis on teamfighting in my builds/mindset and just being there when a fight broke out. People are going to fight no matter what lol

For example, Last game I was 17/6, but the xayah got caught out 40 minutes into the game and we just lost. I was at the enemy blue that wasn't warded, looking to get a pick, but I needed to be with my team because our adc wasn't too bright. I was doing something smart, but I lost because I was being smart.

Just learn how to play teamfights like a boss lol

Aptest1 votes

Lets continue a bit with this example.

Let us suppose that if everybody plays "that way" than your team wins. But since someone on the bot lane made a mistake, your team will lose.

The person in the example now has a choice to make. He can continue playing "that way" and eventually lose the game, or he can take a risk to try and set the game in his team's favor again.

If he plays safe than he has 100% lose, but if he takes a risk it is 60% lose, 40% win. The risk is highly favorable as the chosen action.

However this comes at a cost to grade. So grade here does not reflect the winning play.

First thing to realize: Grading System is BULLSHIT! Stop arguing about how it would work out - I cant even count the amount of S I got by playing absolute crap as well the amount of As and Bs I got for actually winning the freaking game! All it does is basicly giving you a grade based on your CS/s and jumps completely out of the window when playing anything offmeta, nothing else.

So pls - say goodbye to this grading system first and stop arguing with it, thx.

Lol, why do you think even higher elos are downvoting you lmfao. Bonus lp towards winning teams is pretty stupid though.

i suggest that you lose/gain lp based on your performance. And when comparing stats, dont use challenger stats but instead use the average stats of their division(not silver 3 or bronze 1, use the bronze average stats). Count cs, wards, kda, and damage per minute and how much they tanked based on their champ. Although this is an complex system, it creates a state where you cant get carried being 0/10/1 and gain liek 20 lp
