other than game knowledge ive also been getting more or less bored with support lately and have been thinking about swapping roles. any tips or ideas or teachings would be very helpful, thanks :)
While I'm unranked atm (I was Silver 5 in S5 and just stopped playing because i got bored) so take this with a grain of salt.
Top lane is all about how well you can duel early, while still providing something to team fights. Currently I'd recommend top laners like Trundle, Voli, Quinn, and maybe even Maokai. Mostly because all of these champions do well early, and can still provide some really benefits to the team mid / late game. My personal favorite is trundle, He's difficult to duel because he steals your AD and defenses, however during team fights if you pillar correctly AND ult a tank you can become this un-killable machine who can peel for your carries. Quinn can out-duel any melee so long as you learn to kite properly, as well as her ganks level 6 can be seriously damaging, tp gank.
Basically top lane - learn to play champions who are good early and don't fall off / scale late.
