Ranked Placements - Isn't it about time we fixed them?
Just to clarify before I expand, i'm talking with regards to the first ranked placements an account does rather than "soft" resets.
Essentially, anyone who has played in silver 1-4 at any point is familiar with the unranked, "new" players. Some are legitimately new to the game (weclome!) and some are smurfs (that's okay). However, no one can deny the negative impact this has on game quality.
This negative impact can, and should, be managed appropriately. Here is an idea to do just that:
New accounts should need to play at least 100 normal games before being eligible for ranked. After 100 games of normals, an account will have a reasonably accurate normal MMR. **Use this normal MMR to guide a starting ranked MMR. **
For instance, by default this is around a silver 2 MMR. While this is great if someone is a silver smurf, gameplay quickly deteriorates if the player is either entirely new, or a high elo smurf.
As an example, player A has won 75 out of their 100 normal games, and has a normal MMR that is relatively high, this player should start their first placements at mid gold elo. As an example, Player B has won 50 out of their 100 normal games and has a normal MMR that is average, this player should start their placements around a mid silver elo. As an example, Player C has won 25 out of their 100 normal games and has a normal MMR that is relatively low, this player should start their placements around a mid bronze level.
No system can ever truly solve the new player issue, but I believe the one I have proposed is more than capable of minimising the impact and creating amore enjoyable ranked experience overall.
