Team Comps (Players not Champions)

I was recently, about 3 minutes ago, in a game with 4 ranked people. All of whom were on the enemy team. 2 Gold Vs a Silver 1 and a Bronze 1. My team had zero ranked players, three of which had never played draft pick let alone Ranked and the only other person besides me who had play ranked before was playing his second game. I told my friend the issue and he stated that this happens regularly in ranked and to just deal with it. My "problem" per say, is that every other game that has a decent following matches players within their skill level, or at least splits teams up some what evenly. A team may have one really good player but its balanced by a bad player, or both teams have good players and if there is an imbalance then its as even as possible, if there are three gold tier players than the silver tier will be put with the single gold player. Since ranked games are forced to be Solo/Duo que any issue regrading splitting up friends is non nonexistent. I think this change/balance to teams could really boost the enjoyment of a game as so called "noobs" are on the same team as a player with some experience. Thanks for reading, even if it was a bit whinny. - Rex

I assume you were playing ranked yes?

Little Math lesson first:

Unranked players have funky MMR and it changes really quickly with just a couple wins. Not sure what Riot does, but normally and Elo based system will start at 1200. In leagues case this is approximately Silver 4-5. If you look at a Bar chart of players per division, you can see that is where the "average" player lies. The breakdown loosely follows a Bell curve also known as a Normal Distribution, but with some abnormalities at Division 5 of each league. All Elo systems are based on the original system that Arpad Elo came up with as a ranking system for chess.

In Elo systems there is a Coefficient that affects Gains or Losses of Elo. For new players this is a HUGE number (In the original chess system ~25, for LoL i would have guess around 100) this causes Elo to change dramatically for new players allowing them to reach their "Actual Skill Level" very quickly. The more you play the lower the coefficient becomes (Probably around 25 after like 50 games or something, exact numbers aren't important you just need to know the concept)

In season 3, Riot came up with the League system which took away visible Elo and replaced it will the LP, League and Division system that we have now. This is still based based on a modified version of the Elo system and now uses MMR to judge how much LP you are getting. Basically if your MMR is higher than the Avg MMR of the game, you get less of an LP gain and a smaller MMR change. If your MMR is lower than the average MMR you get a larger Gain of LP and an increase of MMR for winning. Your LP gains are tied to your MMR.

The other thing that happened, is it is extremely hard to fall from Gold V because of the way the new system is designed. You would have to be playing consistently at like Silver V level to drop Leagues. This results in Gold Vs who might have gotten lucky/carried/boosted/bought their accounts/ect, who don't actually belong in Gold, so they may have a low-mid silver MMR.

As far as I know, the system doesn't differentiate between a player in promos with ~1300 MMR and a Gold player with ~1300 MMR. So what is important about this?

  1. You aren't placed based on Rank, but rather on MMR
  2. New players can cause flukes in the system, unfortunately for Mid-Low silver players this can be an issue
  3. Having 4 totally unranked players on the same team seems like a fluke, and very rarely occurs
  4. However assuming that brand new ranked players aren't experienced isn't a good train of thought. A good portion of the time they will be Fresh lvl 30s who don't know any better, but they can also have 300+ normal wins or possibly be a smurf. Just because they haven't played ranked doesn't make them noobs.
  5. DuoQ can also affect this. Used to be anyone could Duo with anyone, now they can only Duo a League apart. Gold-Silver for example. (Which is weird, that a Gold 1 can duo with a Silver 5; but a Plat 5 can't duo with a Silver 1 even though the difference between Plat 5 and Silver 1 is smaller about 1 whole tier, where the difference in the first case is borderline 2 tiers)
  6. Basically you had a weird instance of pretty much anything that could skew your perception on how the game is going to go. It can be frustrating sometimes to think you are up against impossible odds with a huge disadvantage. My suggestion is to NOT look everyone up.
  7. This issue is pretty unique to Mid level silver, and it is something that you do have to deal with on occasion.
  8. Basically sounds like you got very unlucky with what happened.
  • I am looking at the game that you had. 4 Ranked on the other team, 1 on yours. That guy playing AD thresh has like 900 normal wins. ** instead of blaming the system though for your loss, you should look at what you personally could have done better
  1. Some games just need a leader to corral everyone to a unified goal
  2. RoA on supports? Too expensive of an item for support income, and the longer it takes you to get it the less effective it is. Sightstone should be a priority.
