The Wonder: MMR

Smaze··2 votes·870 views

I've been playing this game since season 2 and I only started ranked games near s3. Now here's what I am wondering. A lot of people talked to me about MMR, but I never got to understand it completly. I went from Diamond5 to Diamon1 in about two weeks or so but still, after my two wins in a row in that division from which I got around 10-15points, I get one defeat and lose all of the points. This leads to my question: what makes us lose so much points and win such a low amount when you get up from a whole rank in a streak like that? Is MMR really in cause and if so, how?

Thank you in advance for helping me, Smaze Caitlyn

It's system making double checks whether u got lucky and carried or u really did carry ur games.

I am not willing to say I am a pro, but climbing from Diamond5 to Diamond1 so quickly without duo shouldn't be considered luck or carry (specially since no duo, right?) There must be a logic explanation and I don't see it yet.

The MMR requirement for Diamond I is extremely low (2250+) compared to Master (2500+). This means heavy clamping for anyone who isn't close to Master level MMR.

It affects all Diamond divisions, but mostly D1.

From my understanding is that they wanted to create another tier to differentiate from Diamond and Challenger. Master Tier is basically this. To me it was mainly a way to allow people who actually could belong in Challenger a way to get out of Diamond 1 at least, as before if there were not spots available they'd be stuck winning 0 or I think in some bad cases even negative LP gains. The hurdle from D1 to Master is supposed to be big I think because there's actually a new "level" above it, as before it was just the locked gate to challenger where you most likely weren't going to be allowed to enter no matter how well you played.

So basically, I have to get 3-4 wins for 1 lose the whole division just because they dropped the MMR value of Diamond1? From my understanding, gaining lower LP would be fair, but losing twice as much as you gain is still a kind of "locked gate" to me. Wouldn't it be more interresting to simply win under 10 LP but not losing as much be more of a fun way to climb than just making as it is now, a perpetual pain from losing once in a while because of not so friendly situations with a team or a technical issue which is not even possible to control such as a team mate's disconnection? I just think that you should always be able to climb a ladder from playing consistently good and without making costly mistakes, but it seems that sometimes a single game from the kind I just mentioned can just completely block your progression. I get the point now I guess, but I still have some bitter taste about this whole, still, new system.

It's because their league system is convoluted and inefficient. Your MMR is what really matters but isn't tied directly to your tier or division. Instead they have this meaningless LP system that determines whether you climb and instead of being a static gain/loss with a modifier for win % they base it on a comparison to the average MMR of your division, which again isn't actually tied.

So when you go on a streak your MMR actually ends up low for your division instead of high like it was before the streak and you end up with this wierd clamping that shouldn't occur outside D1 like riot stated. The problem is their system is setup really stupidly.

Without going into too much detail here is what they should have done:

  1. kept MMR visible and tied tier/division to specific MMR ratings
  2. made MMR gains/losses a static number with a modifier for win rate (%)
  3. ????
  4. profit

It's a much cleaner system, you could still do promo series and there would be multiple approaches. You could have the promo series not add or remove MMR, they could add or remove a specific amount or they could be variable depending on games won/lost. You could also do demotion series (play to remain in your division). Oh and since it would all be based on MMR the matchmaking would be easier and you'd always get other players in their series too, instead of getting paired with random people. So the promos would be more competitive.

It may have something to do with the average MMRin your divison. There's probably a big jump in average MMR between D2 and D1, and you're likely below the average D1 MMR.

I really like Aithòs' point of view! It really makes sense and this is why I am overwhelmed but what happened this week with my wins/defeats. I guess they have a reason why they have two ratings such as MMR and LP, but they never make the reason obvious anywhere and it's just not profitable to hide such things from players... I don't get why they did not make a simple and static ladder points system. It would be a really big step forward for Riot to make their system simpler. They reworked the system once before, but it doesn't make it the perfect one... I like it way better than the ELO one for several reasons such as the promos, but nothing is ever perfect and they tend to focus on the competitive approach of the game, so there should be constant upgrades on the ranked system itself.
