My Thoughts on Dynamic Queue and Solo Queue

There is a large collaboration of players completely opposing the dynamic queue concept, and riots statements about the issue. I would like to bring up my thoughts on why Riot has chosen not to reintroduce solo queue to the League of Legends system.

First off, this first piece is not so much an argument FOR dynamic queue, but rather just one of my own observations. The complaints about premades in the dynamic queue system are no different from the complaints about duo players in solo queue.

League is, in general, a team-based game. Dynamic queue matches premades against similarly sized premades. If you are a solo player paired with a 4 man premade, and your premade is not as good as theirs, there was a 50% chance that they would have recieved your premade, and you would have received theirs. Even when considering the premade conundrum, solo players have the same chance to climb as any other solo player. A solo player with good sportsmanship and cooperation should be able to abuse the premade situation, as if one player pays attention to the soloers calls, all other players are more likely to react, and the soloer should be able to follow the movements of the group and play as if it was a high-level team scenario.

Being placed with a bad premade should be treated the same as being paired with 4 bad solo players, as it is a very similar situation. The only time the "premade" concept should make a significant difference would be if the partners of a flaming player have a similar mindset, and all players decide to afk, feed, or flame the solo player, which is unlikely as they would probably just surrender. Running into a premade of such bad viewpoint comes down to bad luck in matchmaking, and this would not be fixed by removing premades.

Being able to queue with a premade allows an overall balanced comparison of skill level (if you disregard boosters and/or playing with higher skilled players). Having good cooperation with teammates is an important part of league of legends. It is the basis of all high level play, where even solo queue in high tiers is based on people's ability to cooperate with other solo players. Premades allow lower level players to showcase their high level of cooperation and knowledge of the game, putting them on the same level as solo players with high singular skill, but lower cooperative skill. It allows the inclusion of a players teamwork to be considered in their ranking, which means that almost all areas of a players skill will be considered, meaning a much fairer placement of players throughout the league ranking system.

I have found ranked queues to be a much nicer environment to play in due to the introduction of dynamic queue, aswell as the new champion select system. Please correct me if this is only true in OCE, but I am hoping otherwise. I feel as though most of riot's decisions have ultimately assisted the community and the overall ranked experience, and for the moment, we should sit back and allow Riot to do what they do. I would like a Riot member to comment on this, and ask exactly what their own reasoning behind dropping solo queue is. I feel the situation would be cleared up through a statement by riot, similar to this post, explaining what it is that they have found good about dynamic queue, what their plans are, and not responding with simply "it's better for the community", because Riot knows that isn't what we want to hear.

Thanks for your time, I am definitely not opposing the idea of solo queue, and if someone would like to tell me what I've missed, I would be glad to consider it.

I see what you're trying to do by equating the following two situations:

"4-man premade on your team vs 4-man premade on the other" = "4 bad random solos on your team vs 4 better random solos on the other team"

Your argument is wrong though. Those two aren't equal. If there are 4 random solos in your team and they aren't great, you still get to have a much stronger impact on the game as a solo player and somehow find the opportunity to carry them. This has happened too many times in too many games, everyone knows what I'm talking about. On the other hand, having a bad 4-man premade? Try carrying them, it's totally out of your control.

Yet even then, you're looking things from the wrong perspective. A player who is part of a 4-man premade yet who is not that skilled and who if forced to play alone he'd be stuck in a very low elo, could find himself being carried by his better teammates and reaching a higher elo than what he deserves. On the other hand, a player who is more skilled than he is could choose to only play solo and end up in a lower ranking than the guy I've mentioned earlier.

It's a matter of fair ranking. Your success/failure rate when you play with 4 other people all the time is not reflective of your true skill. Your group MMR is not equal to your solo MMR. Those two MMRs can't be mixed and combined into a single MMR, and that's what dynQ is doing, something which is fundamentally wrong and unacceptable.

I recently saw a video with the same mindset as you on the boards (http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/miscellaneous/kvaUNvOX-my-two-cents-on-dynamic-queue) and while I agree with that mindset you guys present, it by all means has not "bettered" the community. The community, specifically in regards to ranked, was in a perfectly good place. Queue times were decent and matchmaking was relevant. Although there were some against even duo queue, there was nowhere near this amount of outcry towards it as there is towards dynamic queue. While dynamic queue isn't the worst, its caused a HUGE uproar for exactly what added benefit? What is Riot doing all this for? What are we gaining from Dynamic Queue that we were so very much lacking with Solo Queue? To be honest the answer is nothing.

Just good ol' Riot pushing their #TeamWorkMakesTheDreamWork agenda.
