Is Riot Looking Into the State of Katarina in Competitive Play?
This will be a direct copy of a post I made on Reddit just a few moments ago in hopes of covering more ground. I just want to try and increase my odds of receiving a response from Riot or any information that I can from anyone who might know what Riot's plans are with Katarina, if any. The other post I linked in this one isn't directly related to the issues brought up in mine however I linked it as reference for the most recent large conversation I could find on the state of Katarina.
Ya know I notice it goes unspoken for the most part in the Kat main community that Katarina is totally unviable in pro play. While this isn't a problem for the majority of players who aren't trying to go pro I'd still like to know if there's even a few people out there that are bothered by the fact that their main champions kit is and never will be nearly as good as other mid laners at the top level of play. I'm not gonna get into explaining why she isn't viable at the professional level as many of you already know why and there's plenty of information out there that's talked about this issue in the now years past. My main gripe and reason for bringing up this problem is that the Katarina main community is extremely dedicated to their champion and absolutely love her for what she is good at and yet they will never be rewarded as much as someone who mains other high priority mid laners like Zoe, Taliyah, LeBlanc, etc.(who mostly have been high priority since their release date by the way). It just feels like Katarina mains sort of get the shaft and have been essentially getting the shaft for a long time. I understand Riot's mentality that "Katarina's kit is fun so why change her" but why can't it be fun and competitively viable at the same time? Who doesn't want to know that their time investment into a champion will be rewarded at the highest level of play and not just the lower or mid tier levels of play. Riot's character creation and balance team have proven themselves more than capable of creating a champion who's regarded as being fun and also competitively viable (nudge to Yasuo). Their work with assassins however is typically a topic for heavy debate when you consider all the controversy around champions like Zed, Akali, and LeBlanc. Maybe not enough people play Katarina to complain about her specific problems but I think her issues are just as important as the one's facing the 3 champions mentioned. I get that 1 set of issues is a debate for nerfing most of the time and the other is a question of possible reworking but both problems are equally valid and should both receive attention. I think this champion deserves a serious look over considering that she's been an icon of league of legends for what is about to be 10 years and that her already ground up rework has not been enough to solidify her as a viable pick at all skill tiers. I'm desperately curious if riot is still looking at this champion or if they're comfortable with her current spot. Do they agree with her lack of competitively viability and if so do they think it's a problem?
I have no recommendations for possible reworks however I did some searching around and unfortunately the largest post I could find even moderately related to this issue was about 8 months ago. Which in league of legends time is eons of patches and work done. I don't necessarily agree or disagree with any recommendations in this post, however I just hope to keep the ball rolling and the conversation from fading out over Katarina since I personally think there's a lot more work to be done with her. https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/n48HBN8V-an-important-message-from-katarina-mains-to-riot
