Do we have any Nocturne updates in the near future

I have been an avid nocturne player on and off since I began playing in early season 3. I don't pretend to be an expert on him or the proper way to balance his kit, but I believe I have played enough him to at least have a solid understanding of him as a champion.

With that being said, my main question here is if he is getting any sort of update or balance changes anytime soon. I feel like as far as champions go he has been flung to the wayside for a significant period of time now and quite frankly unless you get ahead in the early game, he feels like absolute garbage to play.

I have a couple main concerns that with him in his current state:

  1. HIs early game is horrendous which is fine for later game focused champions, but that being said he doesn't have a strong ability to duel junglers, provide much meaningful pressure on the map, and in most situations is forced to farm until 6 when his presence on the map is truly felt. However, ever since the nerf to his ult. range many patches ago, warding against his is relatively easy and thus his impact is highly reduced by any player who is warding their lanes properly. This is frustrating especially when this should be a point in the game when Nocturne should shine.

  2. His kit is one dimensional which is fine for some champions, but again it feels awful to play when you are behind, this being a problem since he has trouble getting ahead. He has one simple action: GO, and no solid escape after he all-ins. His spell shield can be helpful but the impact is hardly ever enough when you're diving into a team. It especially feels bad having to spend mana on it, knowing his mana pool is already incredibly limited. Blocking one form of CC when timed correctly is not helpful after the subsequent and impending damage and follow up CC hit, and then he is useless.

  3. Another problem with his kit, (and this could very well be me personally) is that after he ults, he can be kited to all eternity. With more and more champions having movement abilities or ways to the kite, it makes his job that much harder, and is proof of an increasingly outdated kit. He does have his fear, but the time it takes to actually fear the target is easily broken and defeats the purpose of the light CC he has. A soludtion this I see would be a skill shot a clear level of gameplay between the Nocturne and enemy champion. That way it Nocturne lands his skillshot he is rewarded by a much more impactful form of CC, while if he misses, killing his target becomes much more difficult.

Overall I would love to hear from any Rioter if at all possible (I know how busy you guys are) what you think about truly, one of my favorite champions. He has such potential as this living nightmare on Summoners Rift, and I would love to see that potential fulfilled in some way, or at least a few changes to put him in a better state until much larger changes can be made.

Thank you.

I took this man to lvl 7, and I have some comments:

About the getting ahead - yeah, its really hard to get ahead when your only form of cc requires you to stay on their ass for over a second. Yeah, the fear is god tier, but it never happens due to the mobility creep.

I can deal with the one-dimensionalness, like yous said. there are loads of people who are fairly linear (Garen MasterYi Blitzcrank Jax ), but nocturne suffers where they don't. Yi and garen share noct's 'run at them fast' routine; however, they both have slow negates, while nocturne only has a speed boost that requires him landing his q, which has a clunky animation. He has his spell shield, but that only blocks one spell.

About the spell-shield - That thing has a slight power allotment issue. It splits its power into an AS boost (which is nice) and a spellshield, which shouldn't happen. Idealy, I would say that noct should get a spellshield like jax's auto blocker, in that it blocks all spells for a set time. It would be incredibly unique, and make nocturne viable in the bullet hell that is teamfights. He would have to sacrifice his AS buff, but that could go into his passive (hell, chuck the AP ratio for his passive, no one cares about that one).

I think if the fear was changed (maybe have the wind-up reduced) and the spell shield changed to be time-based, his kiting issue would be reduced to manageable levels.

Also, just a random thought. make his ult cd reset on feared targets. Just for giggles. :D

If anyone has any thoughts on what our favorite Nightmare needs, I'd love to hear it!

I actually really like Nocturne ever since runes reforged. He was pretty underwhelming prior to runes reforged, now he actually feels like a solid champion with the ability to fill a lot of roles, in various lanes.

The only thing that ever kept Nocturne out of lanes, was his mana problems. That free to cast when you level up mana thing+Manaflowband eliminates all of his mana issues allowing him to be a top lane split pusher or bruiser depending on what the comp calls for.

Manaflowband also allows him to be a support, and his passive Umbrablades actually has insane synergy with Relic Shield, allowing you to really maximize the gold generation of Relic Shield and instantly shove lanes when your enemy laners recall.

In the jungle he pretty much has two build paths that are both strong, and dependent on team comp. Build1- Dark Harvest+Duskblade Assassin. Build2- Fleet Footwork+Celerity, Black Cleaver+Deathsdance+GA bruiser build. (The amount of Bonus AD he gets from synergy between Q trail movespeed and damage+Fears "massive move speed"+Fleet Footwork+Black Cleaver is ridiculous. Q+Fear+Fleetfootwork, at lvl2 is like +25AD Just from Celerity, and another 15from Q. Its kind of a lot, and carries him pretty well through the early game.)

By no means is he a mechanical powerhouse like Vayne, Yasuo, or Zed. He is a simple champion, but effective in his roles.

I don't really think he needs any buffs, but for the sake of the conversation. A little more healing on Umbrablades wouldn't hurt. He doesn't have the healthiest first clear. And maybe Q trail giving vision. Q Trail allowing him to avoid unit collision.

The only time I struggle while playing as Nocturne, is when there is a Vayne main to trololol Tumble+ reck my face. Or when the enemy team is Zhonyas or pseudo Zhonyas heavy(Vlads pool for example). A lot of the times ill force ADCs to build Zhonyas if I go the Darkharvest+Assassin route. There really isn't a way to survive Duskblade+Darkharvest+Ult unless youre a tank, or you have a Zhonyas. Zhonyas completely destroys his ability to make picks though, and will make him totally irrelevant. Which is when I run into problems playing him.

I wonder if it would work to give him an ability that functions like Vladimir's pool where he turns into a cloud of shadows and becomes untargetable, maybe it could absorb a spell too (this would be to modernize his spell shield of course). It would give him a defensive tool that could be used to dodge stuff in the middle of a fight.

Maybe his passive AoE attack could apply a short-duration fear to all nearby enemies?

I dunno, just spitballing some random ideas.

I agree though, he definitely needs a gameplay update at the very least, and maybe a visual update too.
