New here and it's not easy to learn how this works

I played some of the tutorials but really it's hard to understand how this game works. There is a lot I don't know and I'm not sure I know what I'm doing. Is there a better way to learn how to play this game than the tutorials that don't seem to give much info.? I'm a bit confused. I am guessing most of you have learned how to play this game because you have a friend who knew how and he or she showed you. What about those of us with no one to ask?

My only advice would be to not play Co-op vs Ai games for too long, i.e. play them till you're about level 10 or so and you have a basic understanding of the game, then jump straight into PvP. I know a friend who played Co-op vs Ai almost exclusively till he became Lvl.30 and then got wrecked when he tried to move on to PvP/Ranked. My mistake was playing only 3v3 PvPs and then finding out 3v3s didn't have Ranked solos, still trying to get into the groove of 5v5s to this day... Of course all of this takes into account that you actually want to play Ranked SoloQ when you hit 30, if not just play whatever you want and enjoy the game!

Ahhh, another newcomer!

I taught 4 of my friends how to play back in 2011-12, back in the days where i as forced to play kat mid and try and carry as hard as possible. The good ole days.

With league being such a popular game, the content streams are often flooded with tutorials, and so you kindof have to sift through the bad, and find the good. Let me help you out.

Youtube is where alot of valueble information can be found. People love putting out great, helpful content related to LoL.

If you are BRAND new, this is a GREAT video from Early 2012, (keep in mind some things in the video are outdated.) but the video gives a great overall look at the game and how to play!

Now that you've learned the goals and features of the game, lets get into the meat, the fun, the best part. PLAYING THE GAME

You may be thinking, well where do I start at this point? My first suggestion would be to play some games against bots, and find that champion you like and/or are interested in. All around the web there are many sites which specialize in builds for certain champions and such. Two that i still use after 4-5 years of gameplay, are Mobafire, and Solomid.net.

Both offer great resources on how to build your favorite champions! These guides include what skills to pick at what levels to maximize champion efficiency, aswell as what items work better on certain champions than others.

Ok so you have your champion you like, and you have your build you like, so lets play! Bot games are great for practicing things you have never learned before, such as learning champion skills, and how different items will feel on your champ.

Once you have played some bot games and are used to your favorite champion, you may want to play against other people. PLEASE DO SO. I remember back when I started way back in the day, I played fiddlesticks. I. LOVED. FIDDLESTICKS. However, I would always get my butt kicked every match. This is where alot of players lose interest in the game. They get pubstomped by better players who are playing down with the noobs. Almost all games have this issue, and you can either 1) ragequit or 2) have fun. Thats why I feel I liked this game so much. I didnt care that I was getting my face beat in, as long as I could use my Ult on Minions and farm those creeps up, I was having a blast. So have fun with it, its a video game, not a profession like alot of people dream they could turn it into.

*Let me link you some solid videos which demonstrate some game mechanics (some new, some old) but most still have meaning. *

Zoning Tutorial - I showed this video to every one of my friends that I taught to play back in the day. As you can tell the map is old, as its from 09, but most of the concepts still apply.

Zoning is something that I don't ever pay attention to, but now that I think about it, it is ALWAYS in the back of my mind when im playing. Its more of a sense you gain the more you play!

Last Hitting- Last hitting creeps (the dudes that walk down the 3 lanes) is essential to playing the game. While you might not think it, the gold you get from last hitting creeps really adds up! (something like the equivalent in gold of 2.5 kills per 50 minions killed). However you have to be wary of enemy champions trying to hurt you, and over time you will gain a sense of when to last hit, and when to harass enemy champions. Hopefully this video will help shed some light on it for you.

The rest of your league training is all down to learning other champions, there abilities which they can use, and what they're goal is in there own team. These goals they have may vary by which positions they are playing.

This is all I have for you now. I hope it was helpful, as I enjoyed writing it. It was good to remember those good times I had learning league.

*I wish you the best of luck summoner. *

Three other quick notes.

  1. After you play some bot matches, mix in some real matches. I've had friends that have played Bot games for so long (up to level 30) and they would get so bored, but they never developed a liking for playing against other people.

Playing against others is where the heart and soul of the game lies. Player interaction is always a new experience, and playing against bots, sometimes is not.

Even though you might get beat down to a bloody pulp, you have to make the best of it, and see how better summoners play, in order to improve yourself!

  1. Once you find a champ you like, and have played a few times,*** LOOK UP VIDEOS OF BETTER PEOPLE PLAYING THEM ON YOUTUBE. *** I cannot tell you how many times I thought I was good at a champion, and I went to youtube, sat down and watched one session which taught me something I had never knew about. There are so many videos out there, you can do it.

  2. If it interest you, watch twitch streams, tournaments, LCS, anything. Just watching the game and listening to the commentary helps so much for newer players. Though this isnt maditory, it helps. I have a friend who just doesnt watch any competiive league of legends, but hes still a good player.

At the end of the day, just playing the game is the real key to learning.

Also you should try to keep a cool head during games, there will be players who talk shit at you, but you should try to ignore them and be friendly. Some guys might get angry if you snach a kill or two from them and want to report you for "kill steal" or for being a "noob" but none of these are a reason to be banned. Getting and assist on top of the kill gives your team more gold and it's a team game.

I had played Dota All Stars (and the Dota 2 beta) before, so I knew the basic concepts of killing creeps, buying items, leveling, and the objective of the game (killing the towers then nexus). This obviously made it far easier for me, but there's still way more than that to learn; for that, I watched LoL Twitch streams and the EU/NA LCS Championships.

Some Twitch streams specifically say they are teaching new players, so those are good to watch. There are also in depth guides to playing specific roles on Mobafire, such as this Support Guide by Wicked Eye.

Vs. AI matches are always the best place the practice initially. If you ever have any question at all, just ask in chat; someone there will usually help you out.

I learned solo, though with slight friend help. Easiest way is to look up beginner guides and play in co-op vs AI (play passive so you don't feed the bots), ask for help from the summoners, sure, there's a lot of douches out there but some will help out. My first games I played Cho'Gath Bot lane. Didn't even know what an ADC or Support was. I learned.
