It is time for AP to have something to block/negate physical damage

Colton147··68 votes·3,850 views

As the title says...

Since AD is going to have Nullifying Orb and has item 3155/item 3156, it is time for AP champions to have something to counter their damage - an item that blocks/negates their physical damage.

It is only fair for AP champions to have something that is not trash (item 3157/item 3386) that can block/negate the majority of AD's damage (like what item 3155/item 3156 does).

We're pretending Zhonya's is trash now? It was the best item in the game for over 6 seasons.

LankPants30 votes

Then it was gutted. Its stats were trashed and its CD was extended. If you docked 10 AD off of Hexdrinker and made its passive take 2 minutes to recharge it would probably be trash too.

MysticDreams1224 votes

Perfectly agree with this ^^

With a Zed, for example, who has CDR in his build, he can ult you at least twice in the timespan that the active is down. So it saves you once, kills you twice more.

Not a really good item anymore.

deadlychuck41 votes

It's not bad, it's just not consistent.

The power of Zhonya's can swing from insane damage "mitigation" to actually getting you killed. Unlike the converse items which have no negative risk/costs associated with them.

Maw is heavily inefficient

Hexdrinker is bad late game because it’s an item slot for a low cost

Ralanr10 votes

People don’t buy hexdrinker for late.

PaffWasTaken16 votes

Bulding Zhonyas before was a practical thing to do before for mages and was almost a must have in 2/3 of the situations. Today, you build zhonyas because you are forced to and you don't get much back either

I just want item 3170 on summoners rift.

As a yi main, I fucking hate that item. But it can't be taken away because AP literally have nothing else ever since they took GA from them.

Press zhonya to get ganbanged in unfortunate position. press nothing to? get shield? automatically? and you can still move! you even get lifesteal? Why does AP have to think when using their defensive item but AD doesnt?

Yes, but the game has changed, and stasis is not as helpful as it used to be.

It's still helpful, for sure, but it's not exactly fantastic anymore.

cooldowns are so low now that by the time the stasis is up, they have a spell ready and waiting for you when you come out.

the major problem with with item 3157 isnt the item itself it's the unique passive, and that fact its the ONLY ap + armor item. and the the price of the passive takes up a percentage of the gold cost

if AD wants to build vs an ap heavy team while stil going a full damage build they can get item 3155 /item 3156 or item 3140 /item 3139 , and build item 3111 (and although it is pretty niche item 3091 technically works too )

AP just get item 3047 and item 3157

i literally had a game vs a FULL ad team.. where i bought item 3157 and item 3047 . and i STILL needed more armor i have ZERO option to choose that to give me armor and damage, i ended up going item 3116 because health was my ONLY option

we don't need some fantastic new op item, we just need some option that gives like 80ap and maybe like 60 armor, and maybe something like item CDR like item 2045 has

kile1473 votes

We need this:

item 3191+item 3070=

60 AP 30 Armor 250 -1000 Mana Based on tear stacks

Unique Passive: Awe - Grants armor equal to 2% of maximum mana. Refunds 15% of mana spent.

Unique Passive: Mana Charge - Grants +4 maximum mana on spell cast, mana expenditure, or auto attack. (Max 2 times per 8 seconds)

Plus some sort of unique effect upon being fully charged.

It would give AP another armor option, give armguard another build path, and let you build build defensive while also dealing with your mana issues.

Faceroll Tactics10 votes

You wanna break singed?

That’s how you break singed.

kile1473 votes

The most mana you are going to get realistically in a single build is about 3000 max mana, which would mean my item would give 90 Armor total. Anyone who would build this could also feasibly build Archangels, which would give you about 100 AP at the cost of that 90 Armor, equivalent gold value.

Singed's health no longer scales directly off mana since they reworked his passive. If he really wants to build item 3027 + item 3070 and scale this will give him slightly more late game power while massively delaying any power spikes which seems like a fair trade off. Most Singed builds are item 3151 +item 3800 right now anyways.

I'm generally on your side, but I'm going to point out something that makes armor more feasible on mages: Archeangel's. Only 2700g, and it amplies AP tremendously dependent on how much Mana you have, and a TON of mage and armor items have Mana: item 3050 item 3027 item 3165 item 3025 item 3100 item 3379 item 3110 To name a few. If I'm a mage and vs a full AD team, I don't hesitate to get an Archeangel's and sometimes a Frozen Heart, Lich or Iceborne (or sometimes both), Morello, Ninja's, and Zhonya's. At least if you have an Archangel's, by going tanky, you won't suffer pure AP deprivation. I've pulled about 515 AP on a 289 Armor build, so it's viable. When one item gives you about 190 AP, it can complement your ability to have more armor.

Most ADs will go Lord Dominik's over Mortal Reminder, so Frozen Heart isn't a bad choice either, lowering your HP so it doesn't proc bonus damage, while giving much more armor to fight the penetration.

AP item diversity has been shit for so long, I doubt riot will change anything to it so soon.

ModWulf Helhammer9 votes

Health items.

And as far as I’m aware, nullifying orb isn’t ad exclusive

NineTailedMystic6 votes

Null Orb only deals with Magic Damage.

ModWulf Helhammer2 votes

And does that somehow prevent an AP champion from taking it?

PaffWasTaken7 votes

Every champions along with AP ones can deny AP damage. Its even worse if everyone has it compared to ADs... You are legit thinking that if AP champions can decrease the damage of other APs is a good thing, while they can't even do enought damage as of now...

MangelinaJolie6 votes

The problem is not that they are not doing enough damage. It’s that not enough of their damage sticks, and is healed or shielded over.

PaffWasTaken2 votes

AP mages are supposed to be able to do the most burst damage, but as of now ADCs does even more burst in quick succession. Mages either don't do enought damage or ADCs have too much burst, but AP really dosen't fill its role as of today's itemisation

TheCharmingCharm8 votes

I think a majority of the complaints about this are actually just about how stupidly broken hexdrinker is. If you're an ap champion, and your opponent laner gets hexdrinker, if you werent already ahead, you are going to lose that lane 80% of the time. the item is just ridiculously strong against basically any ap champion, and for such a cheap price as well. They dont need to give ap champions an armor version of hexdrinker, they just need to nerf hexdrinker itself.

AstroFerrari 6 votes

And on top of that Hexdrinker even gives lifesteal for more to increase the chances of you surviving. I agree though

AirKingNeo12 votes

No, Hexdrinker does not give Lifesteal.

SociopathFriend6 votes

I've never liked this line of reasoning. It's not fair implies the classes are supposed to have the same itemization. This premise falls dreadfully flat when you consider a massive portion of the boards practically beg Riot to slap melee-only on half-a-dozen items.

AD assassins (please, spare me the ADC joke) are essentially all melee and require closing a gap to get to a mage. AP mages are essentially ranged, from relatively short-range like Annie to stuff like Xerath that will blast you across the lane.

AP mages shouldn't have that many defensive options. Your job is to keep the enemy away. The few that are supposed to be close-ranged all have defensive tools in their kits- shields, healing, damage reduction, etc. If you're caught out of position, whiff your skillshots, or the enemy successfully flanks you- you're not supposed to just tank it and live while still doing damage. One of the main reasons ADC has been such a hot topic of annoyance is how much survival potential they have.

NineTailedMystic6 votes

You mean like ADCs/Assassins with Hexdrinker/Maw?

PePsiLemoNN3 votes

People calling Zhonya's trash , smfh

Also if you're gonna list item 3156 AND it's component then you should list item 3191

Lauchmelder9 votes

How the hell can you compare Seekers to Hexdrinker?

Seekers has to stack to be fully effective, Hexdrinker gets all stats straight up without a stacking mechanic.

Seeker's Armguard is 86.25% gold efficient without stacks. It requires 11 stacks to be 100% gold efficient and ends at 138.44% gold efficiency. Hexdrinker is 102.31% gold efficient WHEN BUYING (!) and ends up at 159.74% gold efficiency.

"Hurr Durr Zhonyas invalidates AD assassins." I item 3155 wonder item 3155 which item 3155 AD item 3155 item item 3155 invalidates item 3155 AP item 3155 champions item 3155 until item 3155 they item 3155 get item 3155 more item 3155 penetration.

PePsiLemoNN2 votes

You could've said that without being the classic salty mage main but ok.

Lauchmelder7 votes

I could have. But I am sick and tired of people calling Zhonyas as a broken/OP or just even good item.

It's absolute garbage. There's literally only one szenario you will ever want to buy it earlier than a 5th or 6th item, and that's when playing against Zed.

And even as 5th or 6th item you still got better items to build.

Sraeg20135 votes

And even when you're playing against Zed, you have to buy other items first to be effective.

Zhonya's is a "lose less" item.

You buy it, because you're getting fucked and even then you still need your team to apply a lotion to your abused backdoor.

kalima9943 votes

if zhonyas is trash then how about ad gets zhonyas and you get hexdrinker?

honestly I'd take that trade, Considering AP hexdrinker would lead to AP maw, and AP maw would give spellvamp and 10% AP when passive activated.

Meep Man3 votes

I always get really confused when people call Zhonya's garbage. It has one of the most powerful actives in the game.

SB Arneeman4 votes

The active is pretty good but the stats are not. The main problem with the active is that you can't reposition or deal any damage during it, so they can line up all skillshots to hit you once you're out of it. With duskblade, a large portion of AD assassins damage comes from autoattacks, which can't be blocked with Zhonia anyway.

Limrick3 votes

The active is either really effective or it fucks you. Hexdrinker is automatic and has no downside unless you take so much poke it activates prematurely. Also, buying a garbage item for its only sometimes good effect isn't okay.

The Yetii Rider2 votes

"It is only fair".

No, it's not. Nullifying Orb and Hexdrinker work the way they do because AD assassins are melee champions (and there is nothing stopping AP champions from taking Nullifying Orb as well, btw).

AP champions are either mages (who have range) or AP assassins (who have mobility/powerful defensive tools).

More importantly, AD assassins are supposed to beat AP mages. That is the point. They have more powerful dueling in their kits, whereas mages have longer range and more AOE damage and CC. Mages are better teamfighters and siegers, assassins are better duelists and flankers. There is no reason why mages should have defensive tools against AD assassins, and any defensive tools you try to give AP assassins will be poached by AP mages.

Limrick4 votes

So AP assassins don't need defensive items because of "mobility/powerful defensive tools", while AD assassins have the same shit while also having defensive items??? AP mages are supposed to beat ADCs, but guess what? ADCs have plenty of defensive items they can buy to help cover that weakness. If its a rock-paper-scissors thing, then take away ADCs defense, after all, mages can't have defense against their predator class.

There are so many holes in that argument it's ridiculous. Yes range is an incredibly powerful stat, but guess what? Assassins are designed to have ways of countering that weakness. They have mobility and stealth to close gaps, some have ranged harass to soften up their targets, and some have defensive abilities to help escape if things go wrong. Hexdrinker and by extension Nullifying Orb is like giving a lion a bulletproof suit of armor and expecting a human with a rifle to stand a chance. Sure, without that armor the lion could get shot, but if the lion uses its natural advantages to get close, it wins regardless.

Also, "any defensive tools you try to give AP assassins will be poached by AP mages". You mean exactly what ADCs do to the defense items that AD assassins were given?

How about we just take away the defense from AD champs instead of giving AP champs more?

The Yetii Rider1 votes

In case you've forgotten, ADCs poaching other classes's items has led to the following items being nerfed: Sterak's Gage, Maw of Malmortius, The Black Cleaver, Warmog's Armor, Relic Shield, Ninja Tabi.

AP mages are responsible for kiting. If they can't stay away from an assassin, they deserve to die. Assassins have many tools to close this gap but mages can soften them up from a distance as they close the gap. They have self-peel in their kits, Barrier and Zhonyas. Will the assassin still usually win? Yes. Who else is the assassin supposed to hunt than mages and marksmen?

AP assassins are at an itemization disadvantage, I agree. But I'm not sure how Riot could make items for AP assassins that mages wouldn't build.

Limrick2 votes

Same way they eventually fixed Gage. "Melee only"
