Huge MMR gaps (sometimes up to 500 MMR) in games

I've made support tickets numerous times, I've attempted to contact Riot's match making team via email, and the only response I've received was a response about toxicity on the support tickets.

This past season I've experience huge gaps in the MMR average of the teams I play on, and the teams opposing me. Now I know that there is some there intentionally, for balancing purposes, but I've had MMR gaps up to 500. This is truly unacceptable from a game this big with so many developers. I just want to play fairly match made games that aren't one sided because the opposing team is all one league higher than my teammates.

Now don't get me wrong, I have no problem playing against people better than me, it challenges me to improve, and I've played with high ranking friends before, but having to deal with players that are getting stomped simply because an opponent is wrongly match made with them is incredibly frustrating. I hope this is a problem that just I'm having. but I've placed a poll here, just in case though. If I rioter is able to shed some light on this issue I'd greatly appreciate it.

I am extremely skeptical of your ability to accurate recognize actual mmr gaps, particularly when you're claiming ones as large as 500 (which is upwards of a full tier). If you can show me a ranked game consisting of all bronze 1's facing off against all gold 4's (or equivalent), then I'd be pretty surprised and would probably agree with you.

Skill gaps are certainly a thing, and sometimes they can be pretty apparent, but sometimes the mmr difference isn't actually that big (be it due someone good being on a loss streak [so worse mmr than their skill would suggest], someone bad on a win streak [better mmr than their skill would suggest], premades [which really complicate stuff], or even just not enough games in that queue for peoples mmr to become comparable to their skill [common issue in normals as high rank players mostly play ranked]). Trying to claim you know numbers that are invisible to players, and then making claims about those numbers, is unlikely to draw much attention from people who can actually see the numbers.

Dynamic queue has made for lots more premades, which in turn leads to individual mmr mismatches being pretty huge sometimes, but in theory the averages of the relevant MMR's for the two teams should be comparable. I strongly suspect in many cases where you feel the average mmr gap is huge, you're actually just getting mmr estimates from a third party site, which are just estimates, and further may not be making their estimates based on the appropriate queue(s) (Op.gg for example I'm pretty sure estimates team mmr's by looking at each members estimated ranked mmr, and hence is almost certainly wrong for normals, RGMs, and ARAM matches).

Review my post and be amazed.

To be clear, I HAVE contacted riot support and attempted to contact their match making department about this issue, but I have only received copy - paste responses (an issue that I constantly have with support), and non answers.

on my other account, I'm diamond V but I'm getting matched with mostly plat 1/2 players. It makes no sense considering I played pure solo queue and the account has over 51% winrate.

Normal MMR =/= Ranked MMR

Where in my post did I say they were the same? If I go into a normal game and the enemy team has 500 more average normal MMR that's poor match making, no matter how you look at it.

Where are you getting MMR from?

Just finished playing a game with my friends on Twisted Treeline. A 3v3 Ranked match where we went up against a ranked Diamond 3's team. You're probably thinking "Then what the hell is the problem?"... well, our team is Silver 1. How is this acceptable? We lost, obviously... but when is it okay for a SILVER 1 team to go up against a DIAMOND 3 team in ranked nonetheless? This should never happen. Ideally, two teams of EQUAL or MINIMAL VARIATION in skill go against each-other, and the better team with better coordination and play-making should win. Tell me, how is a Silver team ANYWHERE CLOSE to the skill of a Diamond team? This is unacceptable and downright unfair. There is no balance to this. How can anyone justify this?

Yeah TT matchmaking, and ranked team matchmaking in general is a bit sketchy, which is part of why they put in the time windows where ranked teams are even available.

The reason people were getting shitty match ups wasn't so much the matchmaker itself being broken, but that there simply wasn't enough teams of appropriate MMR queuing up at the same time, so the options would be either match who was there, or simply have people sit in queue for potentially hours until a fairer match possibly showed up.

For someone solo queue in ranked SR though, outside of extremely high challenger and extremely low bronze, matches seem very likely to have fairly matched average MMR's (even if occasionally the skill match ups may be less fair).

Hehehhe... similar skill, that's a good one riot. (Mfw I've had games where silvers get utterly stomped by platinum players... gf)
