Let's talk about ARAM

Disclaimer: I know I might come off a bit whiny during this, and if I do I'm really sorry! item 3070

I personally love ARAM I think it's a great secondary option that brings a change of pace to the game. I, despite some champions I get stuck with, love the randomness of what you get and the comp you get, however, I do think ARAM could use some order to it. In summoners rift we're expected to have a marksman, support, tank, mage, and assassin or bruiser of some kind, right? I was thinking that what if for ARAM we had the same basic principle of your team of five (essentially) getting one type of class. So you could have a Jinx , Annie , Braum , Garen , and a Leblanc . This way you wouldn't be forced to play fifteen or more minutes with or against another that's outrageous. Just today I played in a team with four marksman (Quinn , Tristana , Varus , & Ezreal {ap}) and a Malphite . I'll admit the other team got some great team fights in, but our poke and wave clear pretty much canceled out any team fight they won. It ended up being a rather boring game despite winning...

I think adding a little order to ARAM would help in the following ways:

  1. It would help prevent people from saying "GG we lost." the second the game loads up.
  2. Giving the player more strategic control.
  3. I honestly just think it'd be more fun!

[1] I recall one specific incident where our Zilean afked in fountain going on-and-on about how we lost from champion select and refused to play the game. His attitude eventually drove two others to afk as well leaving only me and our Gangplank to try to hold our turrets. He spent the entire game talking about how we were foolish for even trying and that someone like me with only 500 or so wins wouldn't understand how the "ARAM meta" worked. I think the entire thing was ridiculous and I was forced to waste 15 minutes, all because someone felt the teams were unfair.

[2] I think at the moment ARAM is just about careless fighting which contradicts what is expected of league players. We talk about team work and synergy, and ARAM really makes those two things hard! (And, I understand that that added challenge can make ARAM really fun, but most of the time it's a real pain.) I believe that if there were set roles in the game then things like the health relic wouldn't be fought after so much. (And lets be real there are times when someone "steals" the health relic and it pretty much puts you on tilt.) I think a more organized ARAM would help prevent this predicament.

[3] I really do love ARAM like I said before, but I do think some of these changes could make it more fun. I'm not saying that every team would always have a marksman, support, mage, assassin, or whatever -- but that one of each role would make the game better. -- As a side note, to make this work I think the whole having to own the champion in order to trade it should be removed. That way it doesn't limit what roles you might get "forced" to have. This would also allow people to try new champions and their kits.

Final Note: I really hope this wasn't too boring to read, but I thank you for taking your time to do so. If you don't agree with me then I can understand why, for starters this last couple of months has introduced to us a LOT of changes to us players, so another thing that'd change may not excite you. My only hope in writing all of this is the chance that maybe something could be done. It's not an urgent matter or anything, but it is my two cents. And well, you'll never be heard if you never speak.

Have a great morning/evening/night! -- Faxxity Janna, Poppy, Lulu

ARAM needs three important changes made to it

  1. If you dodge two ARAM games in the space of 24 hours, you are banned from the queue for at least a week
  2. Every player gets 1 free reroll in champion select, afterwards they can use their saved up rerolls if they feel the need
  3. Players can be given any champion in the game, regardless of whether they own it or not

This would destroy ARAM smurfs, prevent people from dodging constantly because they didn't get Ziggs, and cut down drastically on the number of games that are decided in champ select due to poor RNG.

Of course, this is ARAM we're talking about. We're more likely to see Lee Sin reworked into an AP support than get any of these changes implemented.

All RANDOM all mid. The game mode that isn't supposed to be TAKEN SERIOUSLY. You get a random champion, 1-2 rerolls, and you just play. That's literally it. There isn't a meta because you can't choose what you get. There is a chance of getting a full support team or a full tank team. It happens. You're first example of the AFK's is the thing wrong with ARAM. When people take the RANDOMLY CHOSEN game mode, why take it seriously? Yes, you want to win so you play that level of seriousness. However, by forcing a meta along the lines of "these rolls need to be present", you're wanting to enforce a meta into the most laid back designed mode in the game. [zombie-brand-mindblown]

ARAM needs some potential changes, yes, but for the most part it is fine. As you said, and have people in the comments, the largest problem is that people are too quick to give up. And most of that is because of team comps but a lot of that is because of (also) what almost everyone said in the comments, no one takes ARAM seriously.

A game mode is a game mode and regardless of the rules, situation, or even potential levels of unfairness, it should be taken no less seriously than something such as Summoner's Rift. But because no one takes it seriously (most not even enough in the sense of wanting to win from my experiences), the game mode will forever be at a stand still.

What needs to happen is that something needs to be done to increase the level of seriousness of ARAM because, like you, I honestly agree there is a form and strategy to ARAM. Regardless of champions, regardless of comps, the right type of play will win the game no matter what. I have carried ARAM games to victory for my team as a champ like Janna multiple times even though we had been at a disadvantage and losing from start. Perhaps not so much as you said, but ARAM is comparable to Rift in the sense of late game team fights. There are generally certain things you do and don't do. Kat is really fun in ARAM, but should you go 1v5 just cause it's ARAM and your Kat? No but yet you see it happen so often because there is that lack of seriousness in ARAM.

Basically though, that is my view on the matter. It doesn't say too much but addresses my point. That and I have paused typing this like, 5 times and my thoughts are really scattered. But until that lack of seriousness is addressed, ARAM won't get any better. And since the League community isn't going to mature into their big kid pants any time soon, ARAM is basically screwed. Give it enough time and Riot will remove it like Dom.

It really sounds like the main problem that you have experienced in your examples is that people are babies and quitters. I don't mean to sum it up so bluntly but the beauty of ARAM is that the teams are RANDOM. What bugs me is that ARAM is not ranked, but people act like they are going to lose rank if they lose a game. Yeah, it can be frustrating to lose again, and again, and again, and again item 3070, ...... but I wish people would just look at the fact that there is no way to form a strong strategy when EVERYONE HAS A RANDOM CHAMPION, .. and just have fun with it.

1: Report all three of them. If you can't handle bad luck screwing you over then you shouldn't queue up for ARAM. Bad picks is not an excuse to afk. 2: ARAM is absolutely, 100% about mindless fighting. That was literally the entire goal of the people who first created the game mode.

Removing the need to own the champ is something that should happen, but weighting the odds of certain champs or classes of champs to ensure balance should not. Especially now that snowballs exist so a team of immobile melee champions can actually win against the dream poke comp with a snowball causing a hard engage.
