So I just downloaded league again after a couple months and I've been playing my 10 placement games for ranked. Had a pretty rough start (1-5) but I lost my last few because I've had afk players in every one. Does the system work around this at all or am I gonna have to accept my fate and be placed in bronze? I finished last season in gold v if that matters at all.

Almost every single player dropped an entire tier after placements. I was G3 last season and went 7-3 and got S3. This is consistent with every post on the forums when everyone went through placements. If you do poorly, you may enter the bronze zone.
However, it's very easy to climb out of bronze and silver due to the OP champions that are allowed to roam the rift this season.
