Darius Rank 3 ult? I don't understand

Darius' ult at rank 3 says that it 'unlocks' causing the cooldown to complete reset on kill.

But what does it actually mean, since I used my ult in a team fight and it doesn't get the finishing blow but finish them shortly after. I thought it meant that the CD would reset on any kill I do, however it didn't reset. Is this a bug or does it mean something else.

Not when you kill a target you hit with Noxian Guillotine. The ability itself must score the kill.

Noxian Guillotine must be the last hit. It doesn't matter if they die very soon after, the ult only resets if it kill the target.

Put another way: In your case it is not the ability killing the target but Darius' passive.
