The Crab and You, why Urgot should be one of your considered picks!

Hello all! As you can probably guess from the title, I want to talk about everyone's favorite special little crab, Urgot and why he should be your hidden "OP" pick when you are in draft / ranked.

Now I know what you're saying. "He's terrible!" , "Wtf troll pick" etc. But the truth of the matter is this, he isn't that bad under the right conditions. They key words being "right conditions."

So what are those conditions? Well, with Zed quickly regaining popularity again, Urgot is becoming a better pick once more for the mid lane. This happened before back in season 4 /5. I think it was like a year ago, maybe a bit longer. Forgive me as the seasons are kind of blending together for me, of someone would clarify that would be amazing. Anyway, he became popular because of zed's popularity because he is zed's hardest counter in the game.

Fighting a zed is easy as urgot, as you can easilly land an E then Q Q Q combo him before he can shadow away.If zed ever ults you or an ally, you ult him right back which negates almost all of his damage.

Okay. So he counters zed, why else should I even consider this ugly (beautiful) crab I hear you ask. Great question, I'm glad you asked!

Another common problem eveyone seems to be running into lately is that games are ending sooner. Thankfully for Urgot, this is not a problem! His strong suits are a decent early game once you hit level two due to his bullying potential in the lane phase, but more importantly his mid game can be terrifying. He becomes ttanky with strong damage as well as an ability that can be used to peel, catch, and even engage with if you're far enough ahead. His power spike mid game will help make sure your team doesn't end up with the more common "FF at 20" that has been going on lately with games being decided more quickly.

"Okay lazy, so that's all well and good but what items would I even build for him? This is all pointless if nothing synergizes with him!" Right again you are hypothetical poster! However, I've found that with the preseason that there are more items that synergize with him than before. So let me explain.

item 3812 ,item 3025 ,item 3158 , item 3156 ,item 3053 , and a defensive option of my choice.

So some of these are new items, and some are old ones that have received love from the preseason, making them more viable options. Some of these items aren't exactly popular right now either. Death's dance id the main offender I think people underestimate right now, but let me explain why it is perfect for Urgot. It gives him that precious CDR that he needs, it finally gives him reliable sustain through his Qs since he doesn't auto too terribly much, it also helps prevent him from being bursted down the moment he goes in with his ult (which was also buffed in the preseason!).

This build though gives him all he needs. Tons of armor pen, max CDR, mana, and enough resistances, health, and sustain to be incredibly hard to kill in team fights. The armor pen is important due to how his E Q Q Q combo works. The E shreds up to 20% of an enemy's armor. Combine that with a ton of flat armor pen, and you get yourself some targets with next to no armor. The CDR also maximizes your shield ise to soak damage mid fight as well if you need to ult in. This build between maw and sterak's gives him a couple second breath mechanics to stay in the fight longer.

Before the preseason, item 3025 would not be enough mana alone to solve his mana problems. Hr still has more mana issues than most, especially early game, however a lot of these issues were made easier for Urgot to deal with thanks to meditation in the cunning tree. Thunderlords is also incredibly strong on him because after just your second Q if you land your E will proc it. The cunning tree also offers more flat penetration which is great for Urgot. For Urgot I go 12/18/0, though I'm sure 0/18/12 would also be a good choice for him.

So I've listed a bunch of his strengths and why you should pick him. I'm also going to include when you should not pick him, as I don't want people to blindly picka champ and then get destroyed because of their choice! Urgot's lane phase relies around bullying the enemy. His wave clear isn't exactly pretty to say the least. Anyone who can shove the wave against Urgot from the safety of his E should dominate him in lane. So champuons like Ahri Malzahar Xerath Anivia (post 6) are all able to handle him fairly well due to their relative safety and wave clear. Urgot isn't the best pick (not exactly the worst either due to his armor shred) if your team is all AD. He isn't bad for an all ad team if you think your team can win quick (so renek top, draven / lucian bot lane, etc).

If you've made it this far through the thread without leaving, first I want to say thank you for taking the time to read all of this. I hope to hear everyone's thoughts, builds, funny stories, whatever it is, involving our beloved crab. I sincerely hope this helps out someone!

Everyone laughs at my Urgot pick.

I laugh at them in their graves.

Urgot isn't bad honestly but if I see a zed, talon, or yasuo mid in ranked I just pick Kayle. I bully them during the laning phase and stop from killing later in game while bringing in enough continuous magic damage to drive every tank and bruiser insane and building a lichbane with thunderlords for the burst damage effect.

I like urgot, but im rather new to him. Played him a bit adc (i suck the needlessly large rod at adc) and i did meh. (not surprised) Never occurred to me to take him mid, how well do you think he would fare top lane? I usually build manamune first, mana early game is rough with no pots (rip) do you think this is a bad idea to rush? what build order do you take (specifically early game)

Urgot is a pretty fun champ. I was planning on using him when I first started. It's a shame one the only things that would convince people to play Urgot is if he was a female with curves and showing off some chest or thigh.

It cannot be overstated just how important it is to buy Black Cleaver on Urgot every game. It gives a little bit of each stat he needs, and every tick of his E shreds armor and provides 20 movespeed. Here is my preferred build: item 3070 item 3071 item 3047 item 3110 item 3004 item 3156 item 3812

So, about two days ago, my friend would only play a normal game with me if I let him break the meta, I assumed he would go a non-meta support that worked pretty well regardless, HE PICKED Urgot "support, HE GOT FED, HE GOT 16/5 BY THE TIME THE GAME WAS OVER. I WAS SCREAMING BECAUSE I DIDNT UNDERSTAND MY BRAIN CANT UNDERSTAND HSFSKAKFAKDFDVA

I do miss playing Urgot every now and then. He's just so super dependent on knowing the optimal item build to take advantage of his power spikes and I'm too out of the loop to pick him up out of the gates when I do play mid or top. Wouldn't even think of taking him as an adc these days.

I always wonder about Urgot's performance from one meta to the next because he has such a minuscule play rate, niche usefulness, and particular item needs that I feel there isn't as much valuable conversation between players to optimize play and strategy as much as other champions.

Generally, I'll play Urgot mid if I see my team is lacking in AD and the enemy picked an assassin. If my team needs AP, I'll go Lissandra (or Galio, if it's an AP assassin). I'm more comfortable with blind picking Urgot top, since he'/ a great lane bully versus the juggernauts thar are so popular on the rift. I'll also pick him to counter assassins top lane. (I wouldn't blind pick Urgot in ranked though; I have champions I am more comfortable with.) I generally won't pick Urgot adc unless my team is in dire need of tankiness. Besides Maw and Ionian Boots, my build generally revolves around Manamune, Frozen Heart, and Black Cleaver, but I'll be taking that stuff top lane so I understand if builds are different mid lane. I don't actually play much Urgot mid, but I'd like to know your opinions on those three items. Can I keep using them top, and do they work mid?

Dangit, I've been trying to get my Urgot top up to snuff. Don't share the secret anymore! It's like my pocket Yorick; if no one sees it coming I can do it now and then, but if people see it coming, then it just ends up falling flat.

I love me some Urgod, but I had to drop him as my go to top laner. He has some mana issues I countered with 1 to 3 mana pots in the early part of the game, now the early game bullying is much less so. I even used the mana regen masteries, but still would go oom vs any sustain champ.

He is underestimated, and most people dont even understand him. The last match I played him in was as bot lane ADC, and I had a pack of tards yelling at me to get a item 3072 because they think "Duh marksman get it youre bad Weasel for not building it!" They told me I did no damage, (had the 2nd highest damage in the game down form our super fed Talon) and just on and on with their projected ignorance. They saw my build item 3042 item 3142 item 3071 and basically though I did it wrong so my support just abandoned me, no one would peel. All because I clearly had no crit, no high base AD items, so I clearly arnt doing damage.... On top of that I have 19 flat armor PEN in runes, BUT idiots dont know what an AD caster is so they whine and stop supporting the ADC.

Still while I hope he sees some kind of mana regen buff (that some champs got to make up for mana pot removal but not Urgot), he probably wont. He will just continue to fall down the win % ladder (at sub 45% win rate atm).

He got some attention in the form of damage reduction buff to his ult instead of armor MR boost. He may see some benefits from Deathfire touch getting buffed. Im looking forward to trying him again after it gets buffed.

Still he needs something else, a mana regen buff is a good start, and possibly a slight buff to his shields base amount, but not much.

Id be happy if he just gets buffed back to a 48-49% win rate.

A pretty good post explaining in detail an off-meta pick? Take my +1, dear sir or madam.
