No more auto-fill

I don't play the game too often half because it's too addicting and half because I'm tired of it, but when I do open League of Legends I hope to play a game in the lane I want with the champion I want. The last thing I want is to wait in a long queue just to get a role I didn't apply for and end up waiting 45 minutes additionally for the game to end. And I don't ask for everything to be perfect, I am ok with a lengthy queue as long as I get to play exactly what I want.

Another big problem that auto-fill creates is that everyone dodges queue because they got auto-filled. I have literally waited 40 minute queues to get into a single game only to get disappointed with an auto-fill role. I really didn't want to play support after waiting for so long so I tried out Yasuo support, pissing off everyone else too.

Some might say "Play Blind Pick then". No thanks, I would rather not join a game where I'm going to be left with support anyway and then get annoyed by immature teammates that really just join Blind Pick just so they can flame others.

All I want is the Team Builder mode there was about a year ago, where I could just wait as long as I needed to but in the end I would get the game I wanted. Or maybe you could add some fun supports that aren't tanks and are still competent :)

I have been auto-filled 2-3 times out of 50 games I think you guys are exagerating, also what's wrong with playing an off-role once in a while back in season 4 you'd have to do that way more often than now so I don't see the big deal, play one support game and you won't be auto-filled for a while problem solved.

Also, if I get autofilled I don't want to play the next game because I'm tilted after that crap. So I close the client, come back the next day... and I don't even get autofill protection? So it doesn't even carry over until when I next play?

Total joke, forces you to play several games a day to even get protected.

And it increases queue times by people skipping. And then when they skip eventually you're the one who gets autofilled in the next lobby, what an awful system.

Autofill INCREASES queue times, REDUCES game quality and does NOTHING to fix the problem IT WAS MEANT TO FIX. And if there is NO FIX to longer queues, LEAVE IT AS IT IS and don't try and botch fix it and make it EVEN WORSE.

10 mins queue > 20 mins queue with 5 skips, given autofill support and game quality reduced to rock bottom.

Riot attempted to sacrifice game quality for queue times, and it didn't even fix queue times. What a joke.

I haven't been autofilled in over 100 games, but to be fair, I do queue Jungle/Support, and I can see how queueing Mid/not support could lead to that. I don't see it as that bad, though. If you're good at the game, you should be able to handle any lane. That's not to say smash the lane, but handle it. I don't play top lane at all, so If somehow I end up there, I simply tell the jungler pregame I'll play it safe and I'll need an extra hand. Plus, if only 1 lane was requested, I can only image how much your 45 minute wait would increase by.

I've heard both sides of the argument and see valid points being raised on each. That said, it baffles me that anyone I've seen so far has yet to suggest the simplest solution.

TL;Dr: there are other options that I do not think are being adequately considered, the system works, but it can be tweaked to work much better.

There are 2 options that I can see;

  1. Simply change the new champ select to allow every player to select three roles of preference rather than 2 with a predefined percentage chance for each role (60% first role, 30% second, 10%last) this would be enforced by making sure as soon as a player had played a game as their last role, they only had to select two roles for 9 games after that, thereby eliminating the need for autofill. This would work well, as I believe many players would be more likely to queue up as support in the second or third positions if they knew they weren't going to end up as support every time.

  2. The second option, and probably easier one to implement, would be to simply force players to play a game of an in demand role (usually support) every however many games and inflict much stricter penalties for inting/trolling during this game. I personally like support, but only when I WANT to play it.

Being forced to play it as a surprise feels wrong. I feel that many people would agree with me, it's not that we're autofilled into roles, it's that we aren't even prepared for it.

Make it so that 1 out of 10 games you are forced to play whatever role is currently most needed during that queue time and tell the player this in role selection. That way it's not a surprise and you don't get people who are unlucky and are forced to autofill an uneven amount of the time.

This would keep the reduced queue times while solving the problem of people trolling and inting/afking because even if you dodged the game you'd just have to queue up as that same role again. People would be forced to learn support this way but not in the unstructured, random, spiteful way, it's currently being pushed on players.

#1. It's really almost the same thing they have already in place. 2/5 roles seems fair. But giving them the chance to pick 3/5 roles is too much. There hasn't been that much auto-fill from my experiece and I'm playing about 5-6+ games a day. I'll probably get auto-filled 1/10 games. It's not a surprise either. "oh i didn't get my first pick, ok" thats as much as the surprise should be. How do you prepare for a role before a you even start the search?Make a rune page for each role, practice at least 3 champs for each role, and that's it. If you give people the choice of 3 picks, they're STILL NOT gonna pick supp. I main jg, and take top as my secondary. I get my role 80% of the chance, if I don't ill kindly ask to switch for jg, and they do almost every time. If I had a 3rd option, I would just choose mid, another highly wanted role, so that If i get top or mid, i can easily switch for jg. If I don't, we'll im still pretty good mid and won't have a problem. The problem is we have TOO many COD type players where they just wanna see them have the highest score and feel like it's because of them they won.

#2. The type of coding required to do that, not to mention that reports on supps would be than much more harsh, even if they werent auto filled. Again this is like what we already have in place. Since everyone is picking everything but supp, random people will get auto-filled. The problem is we have TOO many COD type players where they just wanna see them have the highest score and feel like it's because of them they won. So no one wants to be support because they wont get the appraisal for having shit tons of kills.

Personally in my opinion there should be no auto-fill in ranked. Since most people will just play shitty or int. just because they got filled and no one wanted to switch. I also feel the reports in ranked should be taken more seriously. If you wanted to mess around or give up the first 5 mins after youre 0/3 because you cant ward and over extend, stick to norms or bots. There are people who really wanna climb but can't because a lot of people just do stupid things because they're giant babies.

Have you tried asking for role switch, nicely? There is a good chance someone (like me) doesn't mind supporting though they queue up for 2 other roles (jg/mid are my 2 preferred roles at this time, but I'm willing to trade with sup autofills). Just be nice about it. Even better, even when you trade, you still have counted as played "support", since LoL doesn't know, so you'll get autofill protection for the next couple of games!

I main jg and take top as my secondary. If they ask nicely for my role, i do a quick look up, and if they been playing what I see is better then me, then yea, but I hate the "i just played supp the last 10 games" yet you look at their history and they been feeding as yasou with trin top going 2/16
