Irelia VGU

Champion Roadmap: October 2017 - Nexus

When I read that Irelia is scheduled for VGU, part of me died. What I like about her is not the "multiple telekinetic blades" mentioned in the article, I like the "against all odds" part from her lore and that it's reflected in her kit (her passive and her E, bonus damage & healing on W when you decide you need it...) which created maybe a bit odd (like getting damaged to get the stun) but definitely specific playstyle allowing you to turn fights around. Looks like I have grown to love her for different reasons than I should.

But my biggest issue is that the article describes her current kit as "very reliable" and it makes it sound like a bad thing. I have to say that I don't feel that way, but on the other hand she has no skillshots apart from her ulti soo... Maybe? But my main point is (and this is not just regarding Irelia, I had this on my mind for some time) that some players like myself like reliability. Not everything has to be "high risk, high reward" or even "feast or famine" (which is certainly how some champions feel). Just keep that in mind when designing/reworking champions, not just Irelia.

I would agree on the first part. Ionian champions in general have balance as a central theme. Balancing an unbalanced battle (the tenacity and stun) is just Irelia's version of that that I would rather remain in some form or another.

And the problem isn't reliability, it's too much reliability. Being overly reliable pushes out everything that isn't here when she's strong. Of course, that happens with less reliable champs as well, but to a lesser extent.

She probably keep some things that are reliable, but lose a good chunk of it. And if it's any consolation, the Q will likely remain unchanged and her ult will likely be more integrated with the rest of her kit.

This so much. I love her underdog aspect she's got. It's a shame riot ignores it. :\

The problem with too much reliability is that by definition you create feast or famine on the champ, which makes them HAVE to underperformed (have lower values on their kits) to be able to be fair to fight against.

Imagine you have two champions, one has 4 skill shot abilities and the other one has 4 targeted abilities. Because the Targeted champion is more reliable, his abilities have to do LESS (say have less damage, CC for less time or have lower ranges) than the skillshot champion in order for both to be able to compete with one another. Now, of course, the example above is an exaggeration, but it illustrates why there should be room for error in a champion's kit, which current Irelia has very little of.

I am excited and scared about this.

But at least they said Bladesurge will be basically staying as is.
