Even New Players Feel The New Runes Suck

Hey so I am new to playing Leauge, not even been playing it for a month. But I was playing a lot so I grinded to level 20 and had the option to buy the old runes at a 99% discount. So I got the ones recommended for the 2 Champions I was currently playing.

In addition to masteries there was SO! much customisable variety and this seemed awesome! As someone who loves strategy games where every single tiny decision matters this sytem seemed great. You are rewarded for how much time you invest into better understanding the complexity of the system. You have the option to look at a guide and pick what works while learning but after accumulating enough information and experience you have the power to change the outcome of a game with the little decisions you chose to make.

Then the runes changed... And as a brand new player you'd think I'd be really happy about that considering they are FREE! And when I grind blue essence I can now use it on expanding my champion pool! :D Well...

See the problem is all the choice and strategy is now basically gone... You essentiallessentially have a mastery system with 5 trees instead of 3 but for each champion there is almost a definitively better set of runes for that champion. And there's NO! defensive counter options AT ALL! Well... at least none that are any good.

Supports and tanks got shafted, their options are horendous for the roles they used to fill and now assassins and burst mages are just crazy because the aggressive keystone options (Domination and Precision) are ridiculously powerful in comparison to the other trees.

Now I'm a brand new player and even I felt a shift in the feel of the game that just made each game feel horrible! Before the patch went live I was having amazing games where we would be losing at the start but we would make an impressive come back and I felt my decisions in terms of what build I went with and how I positioned really mattered.

Now though...?

I have not had that experience since the new patch went live. I've played 20-30 games and not once has there ever been a comeback . In fact in every game I feel like I know which team will win by the 15 minute surrender mark. So many of the new runes snowball like crazy where if you get a few kills early on you become unstoppable. And the benefits aren't lost if you make a stupid play and die. You can continue being hyper aggressive, if you get a kill great! You snowball more but if not who cares? We're 20 minutes into the game, I'm 15/2/4 and we're about to take an inhibitor, I'll be back in a few seconds.

Games just aren't fun. And people are more toxic than ever because games feel so hopeless once you fall behind.

My opinion might be considered irrelevant because I'm a "noob" but even I want it to change back to being similar to the old system where you had a ton of options and all of the little decisions had significant impact. But just also make it free please! :D

I just find it ironic that they made this change for new players and I am telling you as a new player this was a good idea that fell flat on it's face. Hopefully Riot will make a change soon. I grinded to 30 and was really! Looking forward to ranked but unfortunately the game I was starting to fall in love with has fallen apart for the time being and unless I main an assassin from now until the new rank season starts I have no hope of doing well :/ Kayle was my bae though! I can't have her ult up every! time an assassin jumps me :'(

Hope you appreciated my thoughts, let me know if any of you new players agree with my rant.

A ton of options? In the old system? Since you are new, let me share a couple details about this time of year. When the World Championship ends and Pre-season begins, there is always an adjustment period. I don't think seasoned players have fully made up their mind about the new rune system. It's too early. Also, we all know Riot will nerf and buff the hell out of this system, because that's the nature of major updates like these.

I'm really confused how you could think that basic stat augmentation with the old runes is better and more dynamic. Like... Really confused. You actually have it in reverse. It's not true about the runes having one path greater than the others. Why? Because, all of the champions come with two basic distinctions, marksman, support, tank, fighter... etc etc These class specifications limited champion viability around the map, because you were stuck with the same runes and item sets as everyone else. Why? Laning and early game. Yep. It's that basic. If you took less than optimal runes and masteries, you were basically handicapping yourself and your team. (Think of the recent Ardent Censor/Support rush every time) If you didn't, you basically lose bot lane.

With the new system, however, we can take advantage of the lesser attributes to champions, customize the game to our play style, diversify a champion pool, personalize your favorite champs and their abilities, prioritize stats in conjunction with your team and lane opponent... The list goes on. Even though you're a "noob" (your words, not mine) You have a valid point. From your point of view, the control of your basic stats seem significant. When you understand the game for a longer period of time, you'll find that "strategy" part of this game is significantly more complex and dynamic with the new system. There's a reason one of the trees is about, "Outplaying Mere Mortals."

The unique tools and effects for each role, acutely highlight that role's strengths AS WELL AS your own. Have you ever watched Scarra on twitch? For soloqueue in low elo, he suggests limiting your champion pool and just playing your favorite champs until you understand the game to where you think you could work with your team to win ranked games. If you have a passion for playing certain champs, and you play them 20 games back-to-back, you'll come to realize the importance of runes chosen for lane matchups, team comp, champion skills, and your play style. In the old system the most dynamic part was, AT BEST, choosing the page with MR or ARMOR. I'm not joking. Ask some of the other seasoned players. I don't want to get into the old system and details of it being boring, suffice to say, that rune system was passive and vastly more effective the higher up the ladder you climb. In low elo, the stats were negligible.

Pick a favorite or two, make a rune page for your play style and one suggested online for each, learn, help your team, augment your runes, go again, repeat... Finally, I don't understand how you came to the conclusion about rune systems when you hadn't reached level 30 for tier 3 runes and masteries, and scarcely played with the system as a whole. How are you comparing the two? You don't have a frame of reference for the old runes to make the call that it was better. Trust that pre-season will smooth over the new system. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE Get ready for placements. I hope to see you out there! I'll help show you what makes these pages way more fun... on or off of my team.

Hope this helped.

You do know in the old system you only needed about 6 runes. AD/AP/Armor/MR/AS/Lethality,Magic pen and you basically have the standard rune page for a majority of champions. This new system you can run multiple ways on the exact same character There was what maybe 90-100 different runes? not sure never counted them all. But AT MAX out side of Nasus random ass rune page you see the only runes you NEEDED were: Physical Damage Ability Power Magic Pen/Lethality Armor Magic Resis Attack Speed

Outside of single champions such as Mundo that stacks Health Regen and Nasus that has like 10 different runes in his page. You only needed those 6 runes out of all of them to actually play. Outside of Meme jokes such as the old BankPlank.
