"Popular champions are popular because they are fun"

Dovahburne··143 votes·7,083 views

Of course they are fun. Winning is fun.

Making Yorick, Galio and Mundo OP will definitely make them "fun", just like Veigar has been made "fun".

Even my Kalista maining buddy, who used to claim Veigar was boring as hell, now plays him thanks to all the "fun" injected in his kit.

No, I am not saying unpopular champions are necessarily underpowered. I am just saying the "fun" excuse is BS.

pfft, obviously pros only pick fun champions into Worlds because they're fun to play, and ban the unfun ones.

Thank you for the input Phreak, could you reiterate why Soraka and Janna mid were picked because they were...what word did you use again? "Bullshit?"

IcyPepper50 votes

Well, when the fact came to light that Soraka tends to be the star of the show, it was only a matter of time.

As for Janna, she was likely picked for her breathtaking performance.

Kitten of Evil7 votes

Zilean I knew you would do that...

soraka mid and top was total bullshit way back when if you are referencing a reference to that. Mana less point and click silence nuke, sustained damage MR shredding slow field stars, ungodly self heal with armor bonus and missing health scaling, not to mention the best AoE fuck you in the game for an enemy team. She was tanky, dealt tons of damage, and still packed completely absurd utility. God I loved that bitch.

Keevalroy5 votes

I wasn't being completely serious with that question, it just reminded me of this, where Phreak made a pathetic attempt to defend Lee, and fled when too many people were pointing out his contradictions.

man, i feel bad though, a rioter came and actually had a conversation and he was just absolutely picked apart. But who knows.

Keevalroy9 votes

He was picked apart because he was being a hypocrite and arguing with contradictions.

Vellich0r1 votes

Never said otherwise, but at least he tried to talk.

Retillin4 votes

Well that leaves the question then. Would you rather have a Rioter come lie to you, or not show up at all?

Vellich0r1 votes

I don't think he was lying, I think he was trying to convince people so he didn't check his own facts much. To me it sounded like he was getting frustrated.

Retillin2 votes

Well Phreak was getting frustrated because people were pointing out where he was wrong. And he wasn't getting the straight love he thought he would. Instead of accepting other points of view he just kept doubling down on the same thing, and people where pointing out his hypocrisy on those issues.

iamleburk2 votes

There was one game where CLG played what they considered to be the fun champions. I think it was Riven, Bard, Vayne etcetera. It was vs Pain, they lost, but they did it because they had no chance to advance at that point.

Azirious Mistake23 votes

to be fair Veigar was fun long before G&B started crying about him.

It's all a game of mentality. Almost all people here can agree that winning is fun, why, because people don't wanna lose. Why don't people wanna lose, because they hate to assume to see winners gloat about themselves while others laugh at them for losing.

I've never felt like losing is unfun for the past 3 seasons, but only recently did I develop to sympathize on why LoL community reacts to winning or losing. I've had many fun while losing, because I _know _ from chat that both my team and enemy's team are cool people to play with and against. So my point is, fun is just how to interpret it. If you're not being a dick, or you're not facing dicks, you're likely to have more fun with any champion.

Sooko1 votes

I agree, but the world is full of dicks :C

Ralanr1 votes

Yep, everyone is an asshole at some point.

But we can always be better. Especially when they aren't seeing anything beyond text.

Sooko2 votes

It all depends on the player, really.

I mean, sure, some guys can lose it and flip a table in one occasion, but most toxic players are toxic on a regular basis. (Disco Heat has regularly caught the same guy being toxic on stream, for example, not to mention chat restrictions are "earned" when a player is reported multiple times)

unless you get stomped early game and feed for 10 minutes

Ariel the Cruel7 votes

True... But stomping the other guy is also unfun.

There's nothing fun about a stomp. Doesn't matter which side I'm on.

LeeSin

Immune to actual objective balancing because of his "fun" level for years.

Yasuo is the most fun champ to play in the game if you know what I mean

Ninpire4 votes

how the hell is the "fun" excuse bs

in the end this is just a game and if i play a champion that i don't find fun at all just to win the game, well, that's retarded

the point of a game like this is to have fun and if you're not having fun what is the point of playing the game anyway???

if everybody played the game just to win then we'd be seeing the same champions over and over again in our games (which to an extent we do) to the point where everybody knows how to play the same champions

the whole reason that we see people playing different champions that aren't very good is because those people find them "fun".

for example, on these boards i see a lot of people claiming that lucian is bad right now, yet i continue to see quite a few people play lucian anyways?? why do you think that those people play champions that aren't even good right now in a game that they are playing for fun??

if a champion has more fun to use qualities then they are going to be popular. so overloaded champions are more popular due to the player being able to do more interesting things with them.

I actually think that people will avoid terrible champions because losing is unfun, but I don't think people believe strong champions are fun just because they can win.

I play Shen and Shyvana mid. I play Quinn. I played Urgod before the buffs. Sivir has always been my go-to ADC since S1. (Incidentally, I've always been Trash at ADC.)

I'm not People. (>_>)

HayRoss4 votes

I have more fun playing the shitty champions, to be honest

Taric It's truly outrageous

Ariel the Cruel3 votes

Taric Mordekaiser bot lane. A match made in hell.

HayRoss3 votes

Hell no. Taric goes top lane

Ariel the Cruel2 votes

Normally: yes. Just like Mord normally goes mid.

I'm just pointing out they make a ridiculously oppressive team when together bot.

HayRoss2 votes

Oh shit. You said the O-word.

That angry Tumblr people are coming

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

"O-Word"? You mean "out"? I didn't realize Twitter had a problem with the word "Normally". ;p

Jokes aside. I actually have no idea what you're referencing. (>_>)

HayRoss3 votes

Opressive is what I was trying to say. The school I go to is beyond the liberal, much like crazy Tumblr people who talk about feminism/oppression/trigger words. Much of my humor tends to reflect that

SEKAI4 votes

OP and this thread just debunked the greatest misconception and lies about League of Legends.

I salute to this thread, thank you.

Extreme popularity only indicates broken kits, and not fun kits.

Screw the "I play fotm and meta only because they're fun" people.

charcharmunro3 votes

I actually find Yasuo/Riven boring as all hell to play, even if I'm winning. The inverse for Jax, Mundo and Singed.

The Loveless3 votes

Remember when this guy was the most popular jungler, and top five most played overall champion despite having a 44% win rate?

LeeSin

Also:

Leblanc

And I'm sure Amumu & Heimer are "fun" too despite low pick rates.

So that's why you should never speak in absolutes.

Lee never got that low as far as I remember, 48% used to be the lowest for him until season 5 hit where it dropped a shiet ton because fotm cruisers suddenly lost their "fun" champ and didn't know what to do with him.

LB's 46% win rate was still picked a ton because she used to have 0 counterplay when you know what you're doing.

Neither of them are fun, they're just unfair. Unless that's the very definition of having fun.

DrCyanide3 votes

I think that the bigger problem is what if the "fun" argument is right. It would mean that Riot has utterly and completely failed to make equally enjoyable champions, and that most of the roster needs a rework.

Right now, Thresh (most played support Plat+) is played more than twice as much as any of the other supports. Lee Sin (the most popular Jungler) is in nearly the same boat. The other positions don't have nearly as big of a gap between their most played and second most played champions, so either support and jungle are missing a lot of "fun" champions or Thresh and Lee Sin have some other attribute that other champions can't compete with.

TurquoiseYoshi2 votes

In ranked, it's a BS excuse. In normals, it makes sense. I'll play Olaf in normals because he's hilariously easy to play and will destroy an enemy team, no problem. Even if I lose a lot of my Olaf games, it's still worth it for those near 1v5 Pentakills.

YCitizenSnipsY2 votes

Sorry but thats not always true. Lee sin, Yasuo, and Gnar are really popular right now and neither of them have a positive winrate aka "helping you win."

Alpharite3 votes

Exactly. If you think picking those 3 champs is a free win, you're a fucking idiot.

I can't tell if sarcasm, fanboyism, or just outright ignorance.

HIgh pick rate tends to have lower win rate. That's basic statistics.

A case where both pick rates and win rates are high, it means the champ is simply broken.

Yosuke Apperu2 votes

Wait... Do you really think mundo is op? I'm confused. o.o

The Mighty Flea2 votes

Galio is actually a very VERY strong pick. Your flash ult combo is by far the best flash ult in the game if used correctly. His shield is retardedly strong and ruins assassins and sustain damage champion, and a wave of minion can heal you too full health, and his poke is relatively underrated. A full mr page with some ap and magic pen starts you off at 50 magic resist and around 40 to 45 ap. He is incredibly gated by mana, but this is fixed with pots etc. He synergizes with chalice incredibly well, and has strong early game. I think Galio is extremely underrated and is not played because of the long standing joke that he sucks.

PiwahX1 votes

Say what you will, but it is really satisfying to delete people with Veigar. He should totally be a tad nerfed still.
