What are some key points I should be focusing on as a new player in gold? Like what type of picks should I be playing? etc.

Just be a boosted animal like everyone else in gold/plat.
Focus on solidifying the habits that got you to gold in the first place. Gold should be where you start getting rid of your bad bronze/silver habits.
first game, afk at 8 minutes and we surrender at 20. great
You can still hard carry at Gold, just get very good at your main position and champion and you should climb.

in gold, you want teamfight champs, or poke.
never use assassins, you need a good team for that.
