Why do I sometimes Smite Blue or Red and *not* gain HP?

If I am doing my first clear, at about level 2-3 I go to my second buff and fight it. During the fight, I Smite it, but sometimes I don't regain any HP for it.

I was under the impression that everytime you Smite a Red or Blue buff big monster you regain a chunk of HP -- is this not the case?

Blue buff gives you a chunk of mana. Red buff gives you a chunk of HP. That probably accounts for the issue you're talking about: I imagine all the cases you aren't getting HP are cases where you're smiting Blue buff.

It only happens once per spawn. The enemy could smite it to deny you the healing. And blue returns mana rather than health when smote.

Like the others have said, Red buff = Health, Blue buff = mana

However, if you use Trailblazer's smite enhancement, then you get 15% of your missing health and mana from using it on ANY jungle monster, so if you use that item often, that could be another reason why you feel you should be getting health.

Wow, thanks everyone. Now that I'm playing Rek'sai (who lacks a Mana Bar) and I don't build Trailblazer, I noticed this issue. Thanks for pointing out that Red = Health and Blue = Mana... I had no idea

Only on red buff. Blue buff gives mana. Smite as late as you can because they both return missing % hp/mana.

killing the large monster of any camp returns a little bit of health, smite or no. Is this what you are talking about? or do you mean the smite bonuses specifically?
