Question about Hextech Chests

When the crafting system came out I had read somewhere that they would use a chest as a replacement of the 400 free rp that you got when you hit lev 5 on a new account. I was curious what this chest would contain so I made a new account. If anyone is wondering it contains an Ashe/Garen Shard + 120 Blue essence to make them permanent + what I assume is a skin for one of them. I got the forest Ashe skin with it. You also receive the chest that all players got on release with a skin + ward shard and 800 orange ess.

ANYWAY, on to my question. I have decided to level this acc up slowly as a 2nd acc just in case. However I think it would be fun to get up to 30 (since it should take half as long now) without buying champs and only playing the weekly f2p's. Just something to change it up on the way. My question is, since you can not earn chests from S ranks unless you own the champion you are playing, can you get chests if someone in your pre-made gets an S?

EX: I play say Darius because he is free right now, and someone I group with gets an S on a champ which they own, do I get a chest for this or am I only eligible to get one if I am playing a champ I own? Curious as to if anyone knows. If anyone happens to know the answer just leave a comment, I'm not sure if it had been addressed elsewhere before and I didn't notice it.

I don't think so. I've seen someone post that didn't own the champion she played that didn't get the chest. Not 100% sure though, it could've been something else.

You must own the champion to earn an chest with it.

Note about the free chest: Don't perm the Annie and Garen champion shards. Those are both 450 IP champions AND Garen can be received for FREE by following Riot games on Twitter. Even if you don't take advantage of that offer, 450 IP is only 2 or 3 days' worth of IP which is a very short amount of time.

The shards are better off being used for 2/3 of a reroll once you've bought all the 450 IP champs (and if you get all the 1350 champs the reroll is worth even more on average) and the essence is better off being saved to unlock a shard for a 6300 IP champion.
