Ranked placement: broken? or just intentionally frustrating?

So during pre-season I was in Bronze III. When the 2016 season started I played my 10 placement games with a score 7-3 and got placed in Bronze V. Is the ranking system working at all? I understand that I am not a great player, but what is the point in trying at all? It seems that if my score was 0-10 and I spent all games playing with new characters that I dont know, feeding, afking etc. the outcome would be exactly the same. Cant do worse than Bronze V. How is this fair that your reward for trying and having a good placement record is exactly the same as for doing nothing at all???

Although you would have been placed in the same division, Bronze 5, your MMR would not be the same if you were to go 0/10 or 7/3. If you wen't 0/10 you wouldn't be gaining as much LP per win, by going 7/10 you will most likely see high LP gains such as 25-35 LP per win and only lose maybe 10-15. So there is a point of the first 10 matches. Remember that games after placements are more important than placement games.

The game is constantly changing, Players can be a Bronze material player one patch and a Gold Player in another patch. Don't expect to be the same rank every season just because you ended S5 as X rank. The game is always changing that means the player must adapt to these changes. Some players adapt to change better than others, that is why they are ranked higher. The point of the MMR Reset is to display how a player has adapted to these changes, which means the rank you're placed at isn't so significant. 10 Game is statistically not a large enough sample size to draw any conclusions, so stop worrying about your Rank and continue playing more games.

It's odd that you don't see people climbing ranks then. It probably has to deal with the highest placement you can land at is plat, so the effects of that ripple down the ladder.

Or it could because people don't have many ranked games played since the season just started. As more games are played the ladder should return to normal.

It just seems like the idea behind that statement is that they want placements to be about landing you at the correct division of the skill you've shown with this new season. When in reality doing well drops you a few division and gives you an insane LP boost.

Riot does not want you to start at the same rank you ended the season at, that is the point of the MMR soft reset. Their intention was to place players below the rank they ended the season with.

I guess the philosophy is that they need to place you lower than they think you should be to see if you can handle people at that MMR. Make sure you didn't get through via luck.

Working as intended. I went 6/4 and got placed Silver 2 when I was Gold 4. I see the reward as me not dropping even farther down the ladder for playing well in my games. If your MMR is higher than where you're placed you'll be getting about 30 LP per win and 10 per loss. It should be easy to climb back up.
